Where to find FAFSA SAI score? Can't see it on parent portal

I'm trying to help my daughter with her college financial aid, but I can't find her FAFSA Student Aid Index (SAI) score anywhere. I'm logged into my parent FSA ID account on studentaid.gov, but there's no obvious place showing her score. Does the SAI only show up in the student's account? My daughter is currently traveling abroad and has limited internet access, so I was hoping to check it myself. College decisions are coming in next month and I need to compare financial aid packages ASAP. Any help would be appreciated!

the SAI only shows up in the students account not the parent one. they changed this in the new 2025-26 FAFSA. your daughter will need to login with her FSA ID to see it

Thanks for the quick response. That's frustrating since I'm the one paying for everything! Do you know if there's any way she can grant me access to view it without her being present? She's 10 hours ahead in time zone right now.

To clarify what the previous commenter said, the Student Aid Index (SAI) is only visible in your daughter's student account. This is part of the privacy protections in the new FAFSA system. The SAI replaced the old EFC (Expected Family Contribution) in the 2024-2025 application cycle and continues for 2025-2026. Your daughter would need to: 1. Log into studentaid.gov with her FSA ID 2. Go to the dashboard 3. Select "View Student Aid Report (SAR)" 4. The SAI will be listed on this report Unfortunately, there's no parent view option for this specific information. She could perhaps take a screenshot and send it to you when she has internet access.

Is the SAI the same thing as the EFC? My son's financial aid letter from one college mentions EFC but another one mentions SAI and I'm completely confused about which number I should be using to compare offers???

I went through this exact situation with my son last year. The SAI (Student Aid Index) absolutely ONLY shows in the student's account - very frustrating design decision by FSA! If your daughter has limited internet, here's what you can do: 1. Ask her to log in during her available time 2. Have her add you as an authorized user (under the profile settings) 3. Even with authorization, you still can't see the SAI directly, but she can download her Student Aid Report (SAR) and email it to you The SAI will appear on the SAR in the upper right corner. It's a number between 0 and 999,999. Lower is better for aid purposes.

This is really helpful, thank you! I didn't know about the authorized user option. I'll text her right now to see if we can coordinate a time for her to do this. Do you happen to know how long the SAR download takes? Her internet connection is pretty spotty.

The SAI isnt on the parents page AT ALL!! Its soooo annoying! I spent like 3 hours looking for it before I finally called my son to have him log in. Even the financial aid office at our community college thought it would be on my account since im the parent and Im paying!!! The FAFSA is so confusing this year with all the changes.

Yep! The whole system is deliberately designed to be as frustrating as possible! They want to make it hard for families to get aid. Been dealing with this nonsense for 3 kids now.

Try calling Federal Student Aid directly at 1-800-433-3243. They helped me locate my son's SAI when I couldn't find it online. Just be prepared to wait on hold for a LONG time.

I tried calling FSA last week and spent over an hour on hold before getting disconnected. If you need to reach them quickly, I'd recommend using Claimyr.com - it held my place in line and had an agent call me back. Saved me so much time! They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that shows how it works. The agent was able to confirm that the SAI is only visible in the student's account, but they helped me understand what other information I could access as a parent contributor.

To answer the question about SAI vs. EFC from another commenter: SAI (Student Aid Index) replaced EFC (Expected Family Contribution) starting with the 2024-2025 FAFSA. They serve the same purpose - measuring your family's financial strength - but are calculated differently. Some colleges might still use the term EFC out of habit or in legacy documentation, but they're referring to the SAI figure from your current FAFSA. For the original poster: Once your daughter sends you the SAI, you can use it to estimate aid at different schools. Each college uses the SAI slightly differently in their financial aid formulas, which is why the aid packages will vary even with the same SAI number.

THANK YOU!! No one explained this to us. So if one school's letter says EFC $12,000 and another says SAI $12,000, they're basically the same thing? I'm still confused why they had to change the name and make everything more complicated!

UPDATE: I was able to coordinate with my daughter and she logged in during her lunch break. The SAI was indeed only visible on her account (under the Student Aid Report section). She set me up as an authorized user but that still didn't give me access to see the SAI directly - she had to download the report and send it to me. For anyone else looking: The SAI appears as a number on the Student Aid Report (SAR). In our case, it was much lower than I expected based on our income, which is actually good news for aid purposes! Thanks everyone for your help.

Glad you found it! Just a heads-up - make sure your daughter checks if she was selected for verification. It's mentioned in the same SAR document. About 20% of FAFSA filers get selected for verification, and if you don't complete it in time, you can lose your aid eligibility. There's usually a note at the top of the SAR if verification is required.

Great to see you got it sorted out! Just wanted to add for future reference - the SAI can actually change if there are any corrections made to the FAFSA, so it's worth having your daughter check it periodically, especially if any of your financial information changes. Also, keep that SAR document safe - some schools might ask for a copy of it during their financial aid verification process. The lower SAI is definitely good news for potential aid eligibility!

This is such valuable information! I'm new to the FAFSA process and didn't realize the SAI could change if corrections are made. Should we be checking it regularly throughout the year, or just when we make updates? Also, do you know if colleges get notified automatically when the SAI changes, or do we need to inform them ourselves?
