Where is my Student Aid Report (SAR) - parent or student FAFSA account?
I've been searching everywhere in my FAFSA account to find my Student Aid Report (SAR) but I'm totally confused. The financial aid office at my daughter's college keeps asking for it, and they said it should be in the 'FAFSA summary' section? I've logged into both my parent account and my daughter's student account but can't seem to find it in either place. Does anyone know which account it actually appears in? Is it only visible to the student or can parents access it too? This is getting frustrating because her aid package is on hold until we submit this!

The Student Aid Report (SAR) appears in the STUDENT'S account, not the parent account. After logging into studentaid.gov with your daughter's FSA ID, go to 'My Documents' section on the dashboard. It should be listed there as 'Student Aid Report' or 'SAR.' If it's not there, make sure your FAFSA was fully processed and not just saved or submitted. You can also check the 'My FAFSA' section and look for the option to 'View or Print your Student Aid Report.

AuthorThank you so much! So we need to use her FSA ID to log in? We've been checking the wrong place then. I was under the 'My Documents' in MY account as the parent contributor, not hers. Will try that right now!

SARs are alwys in the student account. I submited FAFSAs for all 3 of my kids and could never c their SARs in my parent account even tho I was the 1 who did all the work lol

AuthorThanks for confirming! It's so confusing when I'm the one who completes everything but then can't access the results. I'll check her account instead.

I remember being confused by this too! What's really weird is that sometimes the financial aid office asks for the SAR and other times they ask for the ISIR (Institutional Student Information Record). They're basically the same thing - the SAR is what YOU see, and the ISIR is what the SCHOOL sees. But both have your SAI calculation which is what matters for determining aid eligibility.

AuthorThat's so confusing! The financial aid office literally just said "send us your SAR" without explaining any of this. What's an SAI calculation? Is that the same as the old EFC number?

To clarify what everyone's saying - the Student Aid Report (SAR) is ONLY available in your daughter's student account. Here's the exact steps to find it: 1. Log in to studentaid.gov using your DAUGHTER'S FSA ID (not yours) 2. On her dashboard, click on "My Documents" 3. Look for "Student Aid Report (SAR)" - it's usually a PDF file 4. If you don't see it, go to "My FAFSA" and check that the application shows "Processed" status The SAR contains the Student Aid Index (SAI) - which replaced the old EFC number in the 2024-2025 cycle. This is the number schools use to calculate financial need. If you can't find it online, you can call Federal Student Aid to have them email a copy to your daughter's email address.

AuthorThis is super helpful, thank you! Yes, we're looking at the 2025-2026 FAFSA so it would have the SAI. Does the SAR become available immediately after the FAFSA is processed or is there a delay? Ours was marked 'processed' about a week ago.

I spent TWO HOURS trying to find my son's SAR last month - called the financial aid office and they had no clue either! Finally figured out it's only on the student account. The whole system is ridiculous. Why make parents do all the work and then hide the results from us? 🙄

AuthorI'm feeling your frustration! Parents fill everything out, provide all the tax info, and then can't see the results? Makes zero sense.

Have you tried calling FSA directly? I spent weeks trying to find my SAR online and kept getting stuck in an endless loop on their website. I finally used a service called Claimyr that got me connected to an actual person at FSA within 5 minutes (instead of the usual 2+ hour wait). The agent sent my SAR directly to my email. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ - definitely worth it to solve these frustrating issues quickly.

Yes, it actually works. I was skeptical too, but was desperate after waiting over 3 hours one day. The agent I spoke with was able to send my son's SAR directly to his email and also explained why it wasn't showing up in his account (there was a verification flag that wasn't visible online).

One more thing to note - if your FAFSA was selected for verification (which happens randomly to about 30% of applications), the SAR might have a note indicating this. If that's the case, you'll need to submit additional documentation to the school before they can finalize the aid package. This could be why the financial aid office is specifically asking for the SAR - they want to see if you've been selected for verification.

AuthorThat makes sense and might explain why they're being persistent about it. I'll definitely check for any verification flags once we locate the SAR. Thanks for the additional info!

To answer your follow-up question - after a FAFSA is processed, the SAR should be available within 3-5 business days. If it's been a week and you still don't see it in your daughter's account, there might be an issue. Sometimes there are technical glitches, especially with this year's new FAFSA system. You might want to contact FSA directly as someone suggested above to get it sent manually to your email.

AuthorThank you! We finally found it - had to reset her password first since she hadn't logged in for months. The SAR was right there under My Documents. Thanks everyone for your help!

Great to hear you found it! Just wanted to add for future reference - if anyone else runs into password issues with their student's FSA ID, you can reset it at fsaid.ed.gov using the "Forgot my Username or Password" link. Sometimes students forget their login info since they don't use it regularly, and that's often the real culprit when people think their SAR is "missing." Also, once you have the SAR, make sure to save a copy to your computer since the studentaid.gov site can be slow or down for maintenance at inconvenient times!

As someone completely new to the FAFSA process, this thread has been a lifesaver! I'm currently stuck in the same situation with my daughter's application. We submitted everything through my parent portal about 10 days ago and it shows as "processed," but I've been frantically searching MY account for the SAR that her college is requesting. Now I understand I need to check her student account instead - which honestly seems like a major design oversight. Quick question for the veterans here: when you say log in with the "student's FSA ID," is that the same FSA ID she created when we first started the FAFSA process, or is there a separate SAR-specific login? Also, if the FAFSA has been processed for over a week, should the SAR definitely be there by now, or could there still be processing delays with this year's system? Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - this is way more complicated than it should be!

Welcome to the FAFSA maze! 😊 Yes, it's the same FSA ID your daughter created during the initial FAFSA process - there's no separate login for accessing the SAR. She uses that same FSA ID to log into studentaid.gov, and the SAR should be under "My Documents" in her account. After 10 days with "processed" status, it should definitely be there by now. If it's not showing up, there might be a technical glitch or possibly a verification flag that's holding things up. I'd recommend trying to reset her FSA ID password first (sometimes that clears weird login issues), and if the SAR still isn't there, definitely call Federal Student Aid or try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. The 2024-25 system has had its share of glitches, so don't feel bad if you're having trouble - you're definitely not alone in this frustration!

As a newcomer who just went through this exact same struggle last week, I can totally relate to the confusion! I spent hours looking in the wrong place (my parent account) before finding this thread. What really helped me was having my son log into his student account on studentaid.gov and then walking through it together on a video call. The SAR was right there under "My Documents" as everyone mentioned. One thing I'd add that saved us time - make sure to check that the email address on file in the student account is current and that they're checking their spam folder. Sometimes FSA sends notification emails about document availability that can get filtered out. Also, if you're like me and tend to save important documents immediately, you can actually email the SAR PDF directly from the student portal to your own email for safekeeping. This whole system definitely needs better parent access, but at least now I know the workaround for next year when my younger daughter applies!

Thanks for sharing your experience! The video call walkthrough idea is brilliant - I should definitely do that with my daughter since I'm way more familiar with navigating these systems than she is. And great point about checking the email and spam folder - I hadn't even thought about FSA sending notifications. The ability to email the SAR PDF directly from the portal sounds super convenient too. You're so right that the system needs better parent access, but I'm grateful for communities like this where we can share these workarounds. It's reassuring to know I'm not the only one who found this process unnecessarily complicated!

As a complete newcomer to the FAFSA world, I can't express how grateful I am for finding this thread! I'm currently dealing with this exact same confusion with my son's application. Like so many others here, I spent countless hours completing every section of the FAFSA using my parent contributor account, providing all our tax information and financial details, only to discover I can't actually access the final SAR document that shows the results of all that work. The system design really is counterintuitive - it's like doing all the grocery shopping but then having to ask someone else to tell you what's in the cart! Reading through everyone's experiences has been incredibly helpful. I now understand that I need to use my son's FSA ID to log into studentaid.gov and look under "My Documents" for the SAR. One thing I'm wondering about though - if our FAFSA was submitted about 5 days ago and shows "processed" status, but we still don't see the SAR in his account, should I be concerned? Or is this normal processing time? Also, I've seen some mentions of verification flags - how would we know if our application was selected for verification, and would that delay the SAR availability? Thanks to everyone who has shared their experiences and solutions - this community is invaluable for those of us navigating this maze for the first time!

Welcome to the FAFSA confusion! Your grocery shopping analogy is perfect - that's exactly how frustrating this system feels! At 5 days with "processed" status, your son's SAR should definitely be available by now. If it's not showing up in his student account under "My Documents," there could be a few issues: 1) Password/login problems (try resetting his FSA ID password), 2) A verification flag that's holding up the SAR release, or 3) A technical glitch with this year's system. Regarding verification - if your FAFSA was selected, there would typically be a note or asterisk on the SAR itself, or you might receive an email notification. But if the SAR isn't appearing at all, that's different. I'd recommend calling Federal Student Aid directly or trying that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier to get connected quickly. They can tell you immediately if there's a verification hold or other issue preventing the SAR from being generated. Don't worry - you're definitely not alone in this struggle, and it will get resolved!

As a newcomer to this FAFSA process, I'm so thankful I found this thread! I'm currently experiencing the exact same frustration with my daughter's application. Like many others here, I spent hours completing the entire FAFSA through my parent contributor account, inputting all our tax information and financial details, only to discover that I can't access the Student Aid Report that the college is requesting. The system design really doesn't make intuitive sense - why have parents do all the work but then restrict access to the results? After reading through all these helpful responses, I now understand I need to use my daughter's FSA ID to log into studentaid.gov and check under "My Documents" in her student account. Our FAFSA shows as "processed" from about 6 days ago, so the SAR should definitely be available by now. I'm planning to help her log in tonight and hopefully we'll find it there. If not, I'll try that Claimyr service that was mentioned for getting through to Federal Student Aid quickly. One question for the experienced parents - when schools ask for the SAR multiple times throughout the process, is it always the same document, or could there be updated versions if corrections are made? I want to make sure we're always submitting the most current version. Thanks to everyone who shared their step-by-step guidance - this community is incredibly helpful for those of us navigating this confusing system for the first time!

As a newcomer to this whole FAFSA process, I can't thank everyone enough for this incredibly detailed thread! I'm currently in the exact same boat with my son's application - spent the better part of a weekend searching through my parent account for the SAR that his college keeps requesting. The system design truly is baffling - it's like being asked to bake a cake, providing all the ingredients and doing all the mixing, but then being told you can't see the finished product! Reading through all these experiences, I now understand I need to use my son's FSA ID to access his student account on studentaid.gov and look under "My Documents." Our FAFSA has shown "processed" status for about a week now, so the SAR should definitely be there. I'm planning to walk him through logging in tomorrow (love the video call suggestion someone made!). One quick question for the veterans - I've seen mentions of the SAR sometimes having verification flags or asterisks. Are these clearly visible on the document, or do you need to look for them in a specific section? I want to make sure we're not missing any important requirements that might delay the financial aid process. Thanks again to this amazing community for sharing such practical, step-by-step guidance - you've saved me from what would have been days of confusion!

Welcome to the FAFSA maze! Your cake baking analogy is perfect - that's exactly how frustrating this system feels! To answer your question about verification flags, they're usually pretty clearly marked on the SAR. You'll typically see an asterisk (*) next to certain line items or a box/section specifically labeled something like "Selected for Verification" with details about what documents are needed. Some SARs also have a comment section at the end that will explicitly state if verification is required. Don't worry about missing it - if your application was selected for verification, it's designed to be noticeable since schools need to know about it too. The video call walkthrough with your son is a great idea - I did the same thing with my daughter and it made the whole process so much smoother. Once you find that SAR, definitely save multiple copies and maybe email it to yourself as backup. You're almost there!

As a newcomer to this FAFSA process, I'm so relieved to have found this thread! I'm currently experiencing the exact same issue with my daughter's application and was starting to panic that we had done something wrong. Like so many others here, I completed the entire FAFSA using my parent contributor account, provided all our tax documents and financial information, and then couldn't find the SAR anywhere in MY account when the college requested it. The system design really is counterintuitive - it feels like doing all the research and writing for a report but then not being allowed to see the final grade! Reading through everyone's detailed explanations, I now understand that I need to use my daughter's FSA ID to log into studentaid.gov and check under "My Documents" in her student account. Our FAFSA has shown "processed" status for about 4 days now. One thing I'm wondering about - if we do find the SAR but notice any information looks incorrect (maybe a typo in our financial data), can corrections be made through either the parent OR student account, or does it have to be done through a specific login? I want to make sure we handle any potential issues correctly from the start. Thanks to everyone who has shared such detailed, step-by-step guidance - this community is a lifesaver for confused parents like me navigating this maze for the first time!
