Master Promissory Note won't submit on studentaid.gov - tried everything!

I'm at my wits' end trying to submit my son's Master Promissory Note (MPN) for his Direct Subsidized loan! We've been trying for THREE DAYS now. We complete all the sections, check all the boxes, get to the submission page, click the big green SUBMIT button, and... nothing happens. The page just sits there mocking us. No error message, no loading icon, NOTHING! We've tried: - Different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) - Different devices (laptop, tablet) - Turning off pop-up blockers and ad blockers - Completing the entrance counseling AGAIN just in case And just now, I finally tried clearing the browser cache but the submit button STILL does nothing. The loan is showing as "Accepted" in his financial aid package, so I know we need to complete this MPN. His tuition is due in 3 weeks and I'm panicking! Have other parents run into this nightmare? Any solutions?

omg same thing happened with my daughters MPN last week!! so frustrating!!! we ended up having to use Microsoft Edge in private browsing mode + disable all extensions. worked instantly after that. no idea why but something about the site hates chrome

Thanks! I'll try Edge in private browsing right now. This whole process is making me lose my mind...

This is a known issue with the studentaid.gov site when completing MPNs. A few technical solutions to try: 1. Make sure JavaScript is enabled in your browser settings 2. Try using a computer rather than mobile/tablet (the site isn't optimized for mobile) 3. Check if any browser extensions are interfering (try incognito/private mode) 4. Verify your son's FSA ID login credentials are working properly 5. Try completing it during non-peak hours (early morning or late evening) If all else fails, you should contact Federal Student Aid directly. Their systems have been overwhelmed with the new FAFSA changes.

Thanks for the detailed reply! JavaScript is definitely enabled, and we've tried multiple devices. I think I'll try the non-peak hours suggestion tonight. Would a FSA ID issue still let us get all the way to the submit button though?

I had the EXACT same issue with my daughter's MPN last month. Turns out in our case, there was a TINY checkbox at the very bottom of the page about authorizing electronic signatures that wasn't checked. The frustrating part was there was NO ERROR MESSAGE to tell us what was wrong! Have you checked that all boxes are ticked? Sometimes they're easy to miss.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure we checked all the boxes, but I'll go through it again and look for any tiny checkboxes we might have missed. This system is so poorly designed!

you might need to try a diffrent bowser. i used safari and it worked good. also make sure you have java updated

It's JavaScript that needs to be enabled, not Java. They're completely different things. Safari should work if you have the latest version, but make sure you're using a desktop computer. The mobile version of studentaid.gov has more technical issues.

I spent 3 hours on this exact problem last week and was ready to throw my laptop out the window! After nothing else worked, I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to an actual Federal Student Aid agent in about 15 minutes instead of waiting forever on hold. The agent walked me through a weird workaround - you have to clear cookies specifically for studentaid.gov (not just all cookies), log out completely, then log back in with your FSA ID, and try again. They also have a good video explaining the process: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that helped me understand the MPN issue better.

Thank you! I'll check out that video. I didn't even consider trying to clear cookies for just the studentaid.gov site specifically. Getting to talk to an actual human about this sounds amazing right now.

Have you confirmed that your son created his own FSA ID? A common issue is that parents sometimes create both FSA IDs (parent and student), but for the MPN to work correctly, the student needs to have created their own FSA ID and be the one logged in when completing the MPN. The system can detect when it's not actually the student completing their own MPN and will silently fail.

Yes, he created his own FSA ID (though I was looking over his shoulder helping). But we've been using his login credentials throughout this process. Good thought though!

the fafsa site is GARBAGE this year!!!! i had to call them 9 TIMES to fix problems with my daughters application. kept getting stuck on different pages and the submit buttons not working is just ONE of the many issues! don't even get me started on the SAI calculation errors on her account!!!

omg the SAI calculation was a nightmare for us too!! they had my income wrong somehow even though it pulled directly from the IRS!!

There's actually a technical explanation for this issue. The studentaid.gov site uses specific JavaScript event handlers for the MPN submission that conflict with certain browser security settings. Here's a specific technical solution I've seen work for many students: 1. Temporarily disable any third-party security software (just while completing the MPN) 2. Make sure your browser is updated to the latest version 3. Enable all cookies specifically for studentaid.gov domain 4. Try using a wired internet connection instead of WiFi if possible (more stable) 5. Complete the MPN in one session without navigating away If those steps don't resolve it, you'll need to contact FSA directly - unfortunately, their wait times are extremely long due to all the FAFSA changes and system issues this year.

Thank you! I'll try disabling our security software - didn't think of that. And we definitely might have navigated away during the process. Will try completing it all in one go tonight.

UPDATE: IT FINALLY WORKED! After trying all your suggestions, what ended up working was a combination of: 1. Using Edge in InPrivate mode 2. Disabling our security software 3. Clearing cookies specifically for studentaid.gov 4. Making sure ALL checkboxes were checked (there was indeed a tiny one we missed!) The MPN is officially submitted and we got a confirmation email. Thank you all SO MUCH for your help! This forum literally saved us after days of frustration.

So happy you got it resolved! It's crazy how many technical hoops we have to jump through for something that should be simple. Glad it worked!

Congratulations on getting it sorted out! This is such a helpful thread for other parents dealing with the same nightmare. I'm bookmarking this for future reference - my younger daughter will need to do her MPN next year and I'm dreading it already. The fact that there was a tiny checkbox you missed with NO error message is just terrible UX design. Thanks for updating us with the solution that worked!

This thread is a lifesaver! I'm a new parent going through this process for the first time and honestly had no idea what I was getting into. The MPN system seems like it was designed to be as confusing as possible. Thank you Carlos for sharing your solution and everyone else for all the helpful troubleshooting tips. I'm definitely saving this thread for when my daughter needs to complete hers next semester!

As someone new to this whole financial aid process, I can't thank you enough for documenting this journey! My son will be starting college next year and I had no idea the MPN submission could be such a technical nightmare. The combination of solutions you found (Edge InPrivate mode + disabling security software + clearing specific cookies + checking ALL boxes) is incredibly valuable. I'm screenshotting this entire thread to keep as reference. It's ridiculous that studentaid.gov doesn't provide clear error messages when something goes wrong - how are parents supposed to troubleshoot blind like that? Really appreciate everyone who chimed in with solutions!

This is exactly why I love this community! As another newcomer to the FAFSA/financial aid world, seeing Carlos document his entire troubleshooting process step-by-step is incredibly helpful. My daughter is a high school senior and we'll be dealing with all of this soon. The fact that it took a combination of multiple technical solutions AND finding that hidden checkbox is mind-boggling - you'd think a government website would be more user-friendly! I'm definitely bookmarking this thread and sharing it with other parents in our school district who are going through this process. Thank you everyone for being so generous with your time and solutions!

Wow, what a journey! As a newcomer to this community and the whole college financial aid process, I'm both terrified and grateful after reading through this thread. My daughter is a junior in high school, so we're about a year away from dealing with all of this, but seeing how many technical hurdles you had to overcome just to submit a simple form is honestly shocking. The fact that it took a combination of multiple browser tricks, disabling security software, AND finding a hidden checkbox with zero error messages is ridiculous for a government website that millions of families depend on. I'm definitely saving this entire thread and sharing it with our school's college counselor - I bet they'd love to have this troubleshooting guide for other families. Thank you Carlos for sticking with it and documenting everything, and thank you to everyone who jumped in with solutions. This community is amazing!

I'm so glad I found this thread as someone completely new to the FAFSA process! My son is just starting his sophomore year of high school, so we're still a couple years out, but reading through Carlos's experience has me both prepared and terrified. The fact that you had to use such a specific combination of technical workarounds just to submit a required government form is absolutely mind-blowing. I never would have thought to disable security software or clear cookies for just one specific website. And that hidden checkbox with no error message? That's just cruel design! Thank you for sharing your entire journey - I'm definitely printing this thread out and keeping it in my college prep folder. This community is such a lifesaver for those of us navigating this maze for the first time!

As someone brand new to this community and the financial aid world, I cannot thank you enough for documenting this entire nightmare and solution! My daughter is a high school freshman, so we're still several years away from dealing with MPNs, but reading through your experience has been both educational and terrifying. The fact that you had to combine multiple technical workarounds (Edge InPrivate mode, disabling security software, clearing specific cookies, AND finding a hidden checkbox) just to submit a basic government form is absolutely ridiculous. What really gets me is that there were NO error messages to guide you - how are parents supposed to troubleshoot when the system fails silently? I'm definitely saving this entire thread as a reference guide and sharing it with other parents in our district. Thank you Carlos for your persistence in solving this and sharing the solution, and thank you to everyone who contributed troubleshooting tips. This community is a goldmine for navigating these bureaucratic nightmares!

Welcome to the community! I'm also pretty new here and just starting to learn about all this financial aid stuff since my son is a sophomore. Reading Carlos's experience has been eye-opening - I had no idea the technical side could be so complicated! It's crazy that a government website would have such poor error handling. I'm definitely going to bookmark this thread too. It's reassuring to know there are communities like this where people actually help each other figure out these bureaucratic mazes. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

As someone completely new to this community and the whole FAFSA process, I'm incredibly grateful for this detailed thread! My daughter is a high school junior, so we'll be dealing with all of this next year. Reading through Carlos's three-day ordeal and the eventual solution has been both enlightening and honestly pretty scary - I had no idea that submitting a simple government form could require so many technical workarounds. The combination of browser switching, disabling security software, clearing specific cookies, AND hunting for hidden checkboxes sounds like something out of a tech support nightmare! What really bothers me is the complete lack of error messages - how is any parent supposed to know what's wrong when the submit button just does nothing? I'm definitely saving this entire thread and planning to share it with our school's guidance counselor. Thank you Carlos for persevering through this mess and documenting everything, and thank you to everyone who jumped in with solutions. This community is such a valuable resource for those of us just starting to navigate this complex world of college financial aid!

Welcome to the community Harper! I'm also brand new here and just figuring out all this financial aid stuff. As someone whose kid won't be dealing with this for a few more years, reading Carlos's experience has been both incredibly helpful and absolutely terrifying! The fact that it took such a specific combination of technical fixes just to submit a required form is mind-blowing. I'm definitely joining you in saving this thread - it's like having a troubleshooting manual for when we inevitably hit these same roadblocks. Thanks to Carlos and everyone else for sharing their knowledge. It's so reassuring to find a community where people actually help each other navigate these bureaucratic nightmares!

As someone completely new to both this community and the entire college financial aid process, I'm simultaneously grateful and terrified after reading through this entire thread! My daughter is still in middle school, so we're years away from dealing with MPNs, but seeing the technical gauntlet that Carlos had to run just to submit a basic government form is honestly shocking. The fact that it required such a specific combination of workarounds - Edge InPrivate mode, disabling security software, clearing site-specific cookies, AND hunting for hidden checkboxes with zero error messages - is absolutely mind-boggling for a system that millions of families depend on. What really strikes me is how this community rallied together with practical solutions when the official system completely failed to provide any guidance. I'm definitely bookmarking this entire thread as my "MPN troubleshooting bible" for when we eventually face this nightmare ourselves. Thank you Carlos for your persistence in documenting this journey, and thank you to everyone who contributed solutions. This is exactly the kind of real-world knowledge that makes communities like this invaluable for navigating these bureaucratic mazes!
