FAFSA sign/submit error preventing me from completing application - took day off work!

I'm literally at my wit's end with the FAFSA website right now! I specifically took a vacation day from work to finish my daughter's 2025-2026 FAFSA application, and the website keeps giving me an error when I try to sign and submit. The signature page loads but when I click 'SIGN' nothing happens - just a spinning circle that never completes. I've tried 3 different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, and even Edge), cleared all my cookies, and restarted my computer twice. Still nothing works! I've been trying to call the Federal Student Aid helpline for HOURS (1-800-433-3243) but either get disconnected or told the wait is 2+ hours. I don't have that kind of time to waste on hold! My daughter's priority deadline for her top school is next week and we NEED to get this submitted. Has anyone else had this signature problem recently? Is there some secret trick to actually talking to a human being at FSA? I'm seriously considering driving to her school's financial aid office tomorrow but it's an hour away and I don't even know if they can help with the federal website issues.

Same thing happened to me last week!! The FAFSA site is garbage this year with all their "improvements." What fixed it for me was trying at exactly 6am - I think the servers are less busy then. But yeah the phone support is a complete joke. I waited 1.5 hrs and then got disconnected. 🤬

Thanks for the tip! I'll try the early morning thing tomorrow if I can't get it working tonight. Did you have any issues with your FSA ID? I'm wondering if that might be part of my problem since we had to create new ones with their system update.

I work in financial aid at a community college, and we've been seeing a LOT of signature issues with the new FAFSA system. A few troubleshooting steps that have worked for students: 1. Try using a private/incognito browser window 2. Make sure you're not using any password manager auto-fill features 3. Check that both you and your daughter have verified email addresses on your FSA ID accounts 4. If you use any browser extensions or ad blockers, try disabling them If these don't work, your daughter's school financial aid office might be able to help verify if the FAFSA was partially submitted in the system even without signatures.

Thank you so much for this detailed help! I just tried private browsing mode with extensions disabled and it's still getting stuck. I'll double-check the FSA ID email verification status - maybe that's the issue. Really appreciate your expertise!

lol welcome to FAFSA hell. they make it impossible on purpose i swear. your best bet is probably just keep trying different times of day. the website works better at night usually. good luck!!

It really does feel intentionally difficult! I've put in hours already today trying to get this working. Will try again later tonight. Thanks!

After trying to call the FSA helpline for DAYS about a similar issue (verification problems), I finally used this service called Claimyr that got me connected to an actual person at Federal Student Aid in like 10 minutes! Seriously saved me hours of frustration. I watched their demo first at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ and then went to claimyr.com. The agent was actually able to see exactly what was wrong with my application and fixed it while I was on the phone.

Is that service legit? Sounds kinda sketchy tbh.

Yeah it's totally legit! They just connect you faster to the actual government helpline - you're still talking to the official FSA representatives. It's like a fastpass for phone support basically.

I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point! Thanks for the recommendation - I'll check out that video now. Did they help with signature issues specifically or just general application problems?

I dealt with this exact problem two days ago. The issue was that my daughter's FSA ID wasn't fully processed yet even though she could log in. The system needs 1-3 days to fully process new FSA IDs before they can be used for signing. Do you know if your daughter's FSA ID was created within the past few days? If so, that's almost certainly your problem. For next steps: 1. Double-check that both your FSA ID and your daughter's show as "verified" in the system 2. Try logging out completely and logging back in 3. If it's been less than 3 days since creating either FSA ID, you unfortunately may need to wait The new FAFSA system has all these timing issues that aren't clearly explained anywhere on their site.

That could definitely be it! We created her new FSA ID just yesterday because she couldn't remember her old one. So frustrating they don't tell you this anywhere on the site! Do you know if we can still submit the application now to meet the deadline, then add the signatures later? Or does everything have to be completed at once?

You have to have the signatures to submit, unfortunately. The application won't be considered submitted until both signatures are completed. If your daughter's priority deadline is coming up, I recommend contacting the school's financial aid office directly. Many schools will grant extensions when there are documented FAFSA system issues (and trust me, they're WELL aware of all the problems this year).

Thanks for this information! I'll contact her school tomorrow morning to let them know about our situation. Really appreciate your help!

For what its worth, my son's college accepted screenshots of the error messages as proof we were attempting to submit before the deadline. Then they gave us a 2 week extension. Most schools understand the FAFSA is a mess right now.

That's really reassuring! I've been taking screenshots of all the errors just in case. Good to know schools are being flexible with all these system problems.

Update on my suggestion - I asked the Claimyr rep specifically about the signature issue when I called back about a different problem today. They said the FSA agents can actually see your application in their system even if it's partially completed, and they can help troubleshoot why the signatures aren't working. Might save you a trip to the financial aid office!

Thank you! I just used Claimyr and got through to an FSA rep in about 15 minutes. You were right - they confirmed it was the FSA ID verification timing issue. They said my daughter's ID will be fully verified by tomorrow morning and then we can complete the signatures. They also sent an email to document our attempt to submit before the deadline. SUCH a relief to finally talk to someone who could help!

Glad you got answers! This whole new FAFSA system is such a disaster. My daughter almost missed out on $8000 in grants because of similar issues. They really need to extend all the deadlines this year.

Completely agree! I don't understand how they could launch a system with so many problems when students' financial futures depend on it. At least we finally have a path forward now.

I'm dealing with a similar signature issue right now and this thread has been so helpful! For anyone else reading this, I wanted to add that I discovered you can check your FSA ID verification status by logging into your account and looking at the "My Account" section - it will show if your identity verification is still "pending" or "complete." This saved me from wondering if that was my problem. Also, if you're still having browser issues, try Safari if you're on a Mac - it worked for me when Chrome and Firefox didn't. The FAFSA system really is a nightmare this year but at least we're all suffering together! 😅

This is such great additional info, thank you! I wish I had known about checking the FSA ID verification status earlier - that would have saved me hours of troubleshooting. And good tip about Safari too! It's crazy how different browsers can have such different results with government websites. Really appreciate you sharing what worked for you. This whole experience has been so stressful but at least this community has been incredibly helpful! 🙏
