FAFSA shows 'no loans or grants' after processing - what does this mean for my son?

Just checked my son's studentaid.gov account and I'm freaking out! Under 'My Aid' it says 'You currently don't have any federal loans or grants' but it shows our 2024-25 FAFSA form was processed (submitted 11/01/2024). Does this mean he was DENIED all financial aid?? We really need help with his college costs starting this fall. Is it too late to apply for grants? Has anyone else seen this message? What does it actually mean? Should I be calling someone about this??

That message is normal! It just means your FAFSA was processed but no aid has been AWARDED yet. Schools haven't received it and made decisions. The fafsa is just the application, not the actual award. Check your SAI (Student Aid Index) score on the site - that's what matters for now.

OMG thank you!! I was having a total meltdown thinking we missed something major. Where exactly do I find the SAI score? I'm looking at his account now and don't see it anywhere obvious...

That's completely normal and doesn't mean denial. When the FAFSA is processed, your son's information gets sent to the colleges he listed on the application. Each college will then put together a financial aid package based on their available funds and your SAI (Student Aid Index). You'll receive financial aid award letters from each school separately, usually with admission decisions or shortly after. No need to panic!

That's such a relief! The wording on the site is so misleading. When should we expect to hear from colleges about the actual aid amounts? He applied to 5 schools.

Thanks! Did you end up getting decent aid for your daughter? I'm still worried since our income increased a bit last year.

Financial aid advisor here. This is normal and expected. The FAFSA system will show "You currently don't have any federal loans or grants" until funds are actually dispersed to the school and applied to the student account. This typically happens just before each semester starts. Your next steps should be: 1. Check your SAI (found in the FAFSA confirmation email or by downloading your Student Aid Report) 2. Watch for communications from each school about their financial aid offers 3. Compare aid packages when they arrive Different schools will offer different amounts based on their funding and your son's SAI. Some may offer institutional grants and scholarships beyond federal aid.

Thank you for such a detailed explanation. I found his SAI in the confirmation email - it's 13,842. Is that good or bad? We're middle income (about $92k for household of 4).

I've been through this NIGHTMARE with 2 kids now. The financial aid system is incredibly confusing and uses the most anxiety-inducing language possible! That message just means they processed your application, not that you were denied. Colleges will determine the actual awards and you'll get separate letters from each one. RIDICULOUS that they make parents panic like this with their vague messaging!!

Yes! Why can't they just say "Your FAFSA has been processed and sent to colleges" instead of making it seem like you got denied? Thanks for confirming I'm not crazy for being confused.

have u tried calling the fafsa helpline? they never answer when i call but my roomate told me about this service called Claimyr that gets u through to a real person at FSA fast. saved me hours when i had the same issue last semester. check out claimyr.com - theres a video at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ showing how it works

The FAFSA form being processed just means they calculated your SAI (Student Aid Index) which replaces the old EFC. Check your Student Aid Report (SAR) for your SAI number - that's what colleges use to determine aid eligibility. Each school will send a separate financial aid package in the next few months. As for grants, the FAFSA application IS your application for federal grants like the Pell Grant. You don't need to apply separately for those. But your son should definitely apply for private and institutional scholarships - those are separate from FAFSA completely.

This makes so much more sense now. His SAI is 13,842. Will that qualify for any Pell Grants or only loans? And yes, he's been applying for private scholarships too.

With an SAI of 13,842, he likely won't qualify for Pell Grants (those typically go to students with SAI under 6,000). However, he might qualify for subsidized loans and work-study. Also, many schools have their own institutional grants with higher SAI thresholds than Pell, so don't lose hope!

When my son got that message I totally panicked too!!! The system is SOOO confusing. But you'll get separate notifications from each college once they process his info. Some colleges are SUPER slow with this - my son didn't get his first aid offer until March even though his FAFSA was processed in November. The waiting is the worst part!

March?! That's going to be a long wait... Did the financial aid end up being decent once you finally heard back?

It varied WILDLY between schools. His state university offered decent aid, but the private college gave him an AMAZING package that made it actually cheaper than the state school! So definitely wait to see all offers before making decisions.

Don't panic! I went through the exact same thing with my daughter two years ago. That message is completely normal - it just means your FAFSA has been processed and your son's information has been sent to the colleges he listed. The actual financial aid awards come directly from each individual school, not from the federal student aid website. Each college will review his SAI and their own budget to create a personalized aid package. You should start receiving financial aid award letters from the schools between now and April (some schools are faster than others). These letters will show the actual grants, scholarships, work-study, and loan amounts each school is offering. The waiting is nerve-wracking, but you're right on track! Just keep an eye on your email and student portals for each college he applied to.
