FAFSA form reverted from 'Processed' to 'In Process' after clicking through correction prompt - glitch?

HELP! My son just had his FAFSA completely MESS UP on him today. He got an email this morning saying he needed to make corrections to his FAFSA application. When he logged in, everything showed as 'Processed' with a nice little green checkmark. Great, right? WRONG. He kept clicking through the screens anyway (since the email said to make corrections) and even though we didn't change a single thing, his status suddenly flipped back to 'In Process' again!!! Now I'm freaking out that we somehow screwed up his financial aid for the entire school year. Has this happened to anyone else? Is this some kind of system glitch? He already got accepted to his top choice and I'm terrified this will affect his aid package. Should we call Federal Student Aid or just wait it out?

I work in a college financial aid office and we're seeing this exact issue with dozens of students right now. It's definitely a known glitch in the FAFSA system. When students receive those correction emails but their application shows as 'Processed,' they should NOT click through the screens as it can reset their status. However, I can assure you that this shouldn't affect your son's actual eligibility or SAI calculation - it's just a processing status issue.

Oh thank goodness! So his SAI won't change? And his schools will still get the correct information? He's been awarded a Pell Grant plus some institutional aid based on his original FAFSA submission.

Did your school say how long we should wait? It's been 2 days for us already with no change.

This FAFSA system is GARBAGE. Every single year there's some new problem. Last year they couldn't even launch the system on time, and now they're sending out false correction notices? Then penalizing students who actually try to follow their instructions? I've been dealing with FAFSA for three kids now and it just gets worse every cycle. The Department of Education needs to be held accountable for this disaster of a system.

Seriously! I had the same status change happen to my daughter's application and we've been trying to call for THREE DAYS. Either busy signals or disconnects after waiting on hold forever. Why can't they hire enough staff to handle basic customer service?

I had the exact same problem last week and I was finally able to get through to someone at Federal Student Aid after multiple attempts. They confirmed it's a known system issue affecting many applicants. The agent said they're working on fixing it, but couldn't give me a timeframe. The good news is that she checked my actual application data and confirmed nothing had actually changed with my information or SAI calculation - it's purely a display/status issue in their system. So your son's financial aid package should still be intact!

That's such a relief to hear! If you don't mind me asking, how did you actually get through to a real person? I've tried calling several times and either get disconnected or told the wait time is over 2 hours.

When I had a similar issue with my FAFSA status changing unexpectedly, I used Claimyr to get through to an agent quickly. It's this service that holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is about to answer. Saved me hours of frustration! Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The FSA agent confirmed to me this is a known issue with the system currently. The important thing is that your actual data and SAI calculation remain unchanged even when the status reverts to 'In Process.' My college financial aid office could still see my correct information on their end.

is that service legit? seems kinda sketch to have someone else call fafsa for u...

They don't call for you - they just hold your place in line and then call YOU when it's about to connect to an agent. You talk directly to FAFSA yourself. I was skeptical too but it worked great.

Financial aid expert here - I want to clarify something important: When your FAFSA shows as 'In Process' after previously showing 'Processed,' it typically means one of three things: 1. System glitch (most common right now) 2. Department of Education initiated a verification review 3. A college financial aid office requested a correction In your case, it's almost certainly the system glitch that's affecting thousands of students currently. The good news is that schools can still access your son's ISIR (Institutional Student Information Record) and SAI calculation from the previous 'Processed' status. If you're concerned, I'd recommend: 1. Taking screenshots of the current status 2. Contacting your son's school financial aid office directly to confirm they can see his correct FAFSA information 3. Wait 7-10 business days for the system to resolve itself This issue started appearing about two weeks ago and seems to be affecting random applicants, particularly those who filed in February-March.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I just called my son's school financial aid office and they confirmed they can still see his correct information and SAI score in their system. Such a relief! They also mentioned they've had dozens of calls about this same issue this week.

my daughter had this happen and then 3 days later it fixed itself and went back to processed!! probably just wait a few days before panicking

You know what's REALLY fun? When this happens and then your SAI changes by $4000 for no apparent reason! That happened to my nephew and now his college is asking him to pay more because his aid package changed. Absolutely criminal what they're doing to students these days.

If your nephew's SAI changed by that much, it's not related to this particular glitch. That would indicate either a correction was actually made to the FAFSA data or the college initiated a Professional Judgment review. I'd recommend having him contact the financial aid office to request a specific explanation of what changed. SAI calculations don't change randomly - there's always a specific data element that was modified.

Update: For anyone following this thread, the Department of Education just published a notice about this issue on studentaid.gov. They acknowledge the problem and state it should be resolved within 14 days. They also confirm that this status change does NOT affect your actual financial aid eligibility or calculations. Schools can still access your correct information.

Thank you so much for keeping us updated! I checked my son's account just now and it actually switched back to 'Processed' overnight! Looks like they might be fixing it faster than expected.

This is such a relief to read! I'm a new parent going through the FAFSA process for the first time with my daughter, and when I saw this exact same thing happen to her application yesterday, I completely panicked. She had been "Processed" for weeks, then got that correction email, and boom - back to "In Process" even though we didn't change anything. I've been losing sleep thinking we somehow messed up her entire financial aid package! It's so reassuring to hear from financial aid professionals and other parents that this is a known system issue and won't actually affect her aid eligibility. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences - this community is a lifesaver for stressed parents like me!
