FAFSA shows processed but school sent missing signature email - should I risk fixing it?

I'm completely baffled and scared to mess anything up at this point. My son's FAFSA application status shows 'Processed' on studentaid.gov, and his university's portal shows his financial aid as 'Awarded' with all the amounts listed. But yesterday he got an email from the financial aid office saying his FAFSA is missing a signature and needs to be completed! HOW is this possible when everything shows as processed? Has anyone dealt with this contradiction before? I'm terrified to go back in and touch anything since his aid package is already showing in the system. Could this be some kind of glitch or crossed wires between systems? What should we do??

This exact thing happened to us last year! The issue turned out to be that my daughter's initial FAFSA was processed, but when they ran the verification checks, something triggered a signature verification problem. The school could see the initial processing was complete, but the system flagged a secondary issue. Call the financial aid office ASAP - do NOT ignore this email, even though everything seems fine on your end. Usually they need you to submit a signature page separately. It won't affect his current aid package as long as you handle it promptly.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! That makes me feel a little better. Did you have to resubmit the entire FAFSA or just do the signature part separately?

idk man that seems fishy... make sure its not a scam email first

Good point! I double-checked and it's definitely from the official school email domain. But yeah, always good to verify these days.

OMG the exact same thing is happening to me right now!!!!! Everything shows processed but they're saying my daughter's signature is missing. I already called the school and they said ignore what's in the portal and fix the signature issue through studentaid.gov ASAP or they'll put a hold on her account. The aid package showing is what she WOULD get IF we fix the signature thing. This is so frustrating!!!!

Same boat here! The financial aid system is so messed up. Our college portal shows aid awarded, but FAFSA is apparently incomplete? Make it make sense!

Financial aid advisor here. This is actually quite common and happens for a few specific reasons: 1. Sometimes a signature issue is flagged AFTER initial processing during verification checks 2. The school's system and the FAFSA system don't always sync in real-time 3. Different departments may be looking at different status indicators What you need to do: Log into studentaid.gov, go to your son's FAFSA, and look specifically for any alerts or tasks related to signatures. If nothing shows there, contact the school's financial aid office directly to ask for the specific form or process they need. Don't panic - your son won't lose his aid package as long as you address this promptly, usually within 14 days of notification. This verification step is standard procedure.

Thank you for the clear explanation! I appreciate knowing this is common. I checked studentaid.gov and don't see any alerts, so I'll contact the school tomorrow morning to get the specific form they need.

I tried calling the Federal Student Aid helpline about a similar issue last month and kept getting disconnected or waiting forever. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual person who could help. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The FSA agent explained that sometimes the system flags signature issues during random verification checks even after initial processing. They helped me resolve it in about 10 minutes once I actually got through to them.

Thanks for the tip! I'm going to try the school first since they sent the email, but if I need to reach the FSA folks I'll definitely keep this in mind. Those wait times are brutal!

This is why I HATE the financial aid process!! First they say everything's fine, then suddenly there's a problem, then they threaten to take away aid if you don't fix it immediately. And the different systems never match up! My son had his aid delayed by 3 weeks last semester because of these stupid technical glitches. CALL THEM IMMEDIATELY and document everything!!

PREACH!! 🙌 It's like they intentionally make the system confusing. And if you try to get answers everyone tells you something different!

Make sure to ask the financial aid office for the specific signature form they need. Sometimes it's a special institutional verification form rather than going back into the FAFSA itself. Also, take screenshots of both the processed status and the email for your records, just in case there's any dispute later.

That's excellent advice about screenshots. I'm going to document everything just to be safe. This whole process is so stressful!

when this happened to my daughter we ignored it thinking it was a mistake since everything showed processed and she ended up having her classes dropped right before the semester started!!! they weren't kidding about needing that signature even though everything else looked fine. don't make our mistake!!!

Oh no! That's exactly what I'm afraid of. Thanks for the warning - I'm definitely taking care of this ASAP.
