FAFSA shows no aid awarded after daughter signed acceptance documents - normal or issue?

Super confused about my daughter's FAFSA situation right now. She completed all the paperwork and signed her acceptance docs for the financial aid packages from her chosen school (Westlake University), but when we log into studentaid.gov there's absolutely NOTHING showing under the 'Aid' section. I can only see her activity log and submission confirmation from January. Is this normal? Shouldn't her accepted aid be visible in the FAFSA portal too? Or does it only show in the school's financial portal? Getting worried that something went wrong with her aid processing. Anyone else experiencing this?

This is actually completely normal! The FAFSA portal on studentaid.gov doesn't show your awarded aid packages - it only shows your application and SAI (Student Aid Index). You'll only see the actual aid awards in your daughter's school portal. As long as she can see the accepted packages in the Westlake University student portal, everything is fine.

Omg thank you!! That makes so much sense but I was literally losing sleep over this. The Westlake portal does show everything - I just assumed FAFSA would show the same information. Such a relief!

The previous commenter is correct. The FAFSA portal only shows your application status and calculated SAI (formerly EFC), not your actual financial aid awards. Those are determined by individual schools and only displayed in their respective portals. Your daughter's aid is managed through three separate systems: 1. FAFSA (studentaid.gov) - Collects financial info and calculates eligibility 2. School Financial Aid Office - Determines specific aid package 3. School Student Portal - Displays awarded aid and acceptance status As long as her school portal shows the accepted awards, you're all set!

Thank you for explaining the different systems! I didn't realize they were so separate. Her SAI is showing on the FAFSA site, and Westlake's portal has all the details about her grants and loans. Makes much more sense now.

They really should explain this better!! I spent THREE HOURS on hold with financial aid trying to figure this out last month 😭

While others are correct that the awards don't show on FAFSA, it's always good to verify everything is processing correctly. If you're worried, I'd recommend calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center to confirm her FAFSA was properly processed. Unfortunately, their wait times are insane right now - I spent 2 hours on hold last week trying to fix my daughter's verification issue. I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me get through to a FAFSA agent in about 5 minutes instead of hours waiting. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. It saved me so much frustration, especially during this busy period when everyone's trying to confirm aid for fall semester.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm much less worried now that I understand how the systems work, but I'll keep that Claimyr option in mind if we have issues that need resolving with FAFSA in the future. Those wait times are ridiculous!

I work in a college financial aid office, and I can confirm what others have said. The FAFSA website ONLY shows that you've applied and your student's SAI (Student Aid Index). It will never show the actual aid awards - those come from each individual school. What you should see in the FAFSA portal: - Confirmation that the FAFSA was processed - Your student's SAI calculation - Which schools received the FAFSA data What you'll only see in the school's portal: - Actual grant amounts (Pell, SEOG, state grants) - Loan offers (Direct loans, PLUS loans) - Institutional scholarships - Work-study eligibility BTW - make sure your daughter checks if she needs to complete entrance counseling and a Master Promissory Note (MPN) if she's accepting federal loans. These are required before loan funds can disburse and are also completed on studentaid.gov.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! She did complete the entrance counseling and MPN last week. Is there any way to see that reflected on the studentaid.gov site? Or will that also only show in the school portal?

Great question! Unlike the aid awards, the entrance counseling and MPN completion WILL show on studentaid.gov. Go to the dashboard, then look under "Complete Aid Process" and you should see green checkmarks next to completed items. It sometimes takes 3-5 business days to update in their system though.

As a parent who just went through this process with my own kid, I totally understand the panic! The whole system is so confusing when you're doing it for the first time. Just to echo what everyone else said - you're completely fine as long as the school portal shows everything correctly. One thing I learned the hard way is to screenshot or print out that acceptance page from the school portal, especially if there are any deadlines for accepting specific aid components. Some schools have different deadlines for different types of aid, and having that documentation saved me when I had questions later. Also make sure to save any confirmation emails from when she accepted the aid package! The FAFSA site really should explain this better somewhere prominent. Would save so many parents from unnecessary stress!
