When do colleges send financial aid packages after FAFSA is processed?
My daughter's FAFSA was processed back in January (we submitted mid-January), and when I checked on March 15, it showed as "PROCESSED" with a green check mark. It's now been several weeks and we haven't received a single communication from any of the 6 colleges she applied to - no emails, no letters, nothing about financial aid packages. I'm starting to worry something went wrong. Is this normal? When should we expect to hear about aid packages? This is our first time through the process and I'm not sure if we missed a step or if I should be calling the colleges directly.

This is actually pretty normal timing. Most colleges don't send out financial aid packages until after acceptance letters, which typically go out late March through early April. Since your FAFSA shows as processed, the schools have likely received your information. Different schools operate on different timelines - some send aid info with acceptance letters, others send it 1-2 weeks after. If your daughter has already received acceptances but no aid info, you could call those specific financial aid offices to check on status.

•Thanks for the reassurance! She's actually received 4 acceptance letters already but no financial aid info with any of them. I'll give the schools a call tomorrow.

we got our daughter's financial aid package exactly 8 days after her acceptance letter for 3 of the schools, the other 2 came like 2 weeks later

•That's helpful to know! Did they come by email or regular mail?

I'd start calling the financial aid offices ASAP. The "processed" status just means the federal part is done, but each school handles it differently after that. My son's FAFSA was processed in December, but when I called one school in early April, they claimed they never received his information! We had to troubleshoot with them and it turned out he hadn't been properly matched in their system. The other schools had everything fine. Definitely don't wait - some schools have internal deadlines for institutional aid that you don't want to miss.

•Oh that's concerning! I'll definitely call tomorrow to make sure they all received her information properly. Did you have to provide any specific information when you called?

call them. ours got messed up because my son put the wrong student ID number on one form and they couldn't match it up with his admission file. took 3 weeks to figure out and we almost missed the deadline for merit scholarships!!!!

•Oh no! Good to know - I'll definitely check with each school to make sure they have everything matched correctly.

If you're having trouble getting through to financial aid offices (which is common this time of year), I'd recommend using Claimyr to skip the phone queues. I spent THREE DAYS trying to get through to our top choice school before discovering it. The service connects you directly to a financial aid agent instead of waiting on hold. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of frustration when we needed to verify our SAI calculation was correct.

Things are SUPER delayed this year because of all the FAFSA problems. My daughter applied to 9 schools, got accepted to 7, and we've only received 2 financial aid packages so far. The financial aid office at her top choice told me they're at least 3 weeks behind their normal schedule because they got the FAFSA data late. It's a complete disaster. Some schools are even extending their decision deadlines past May 1 because of it.

•This is an important point. The entire 2024-2025 aid cycle has experienced significant delays because of the FAFSA rollout issues. Many schools that typically have aid packages out by late March are running behind schedule this year. Some are even sending estimated packages based on limited information just to give families something to work with.

have you checked your daughter's student portal accounts for each school? sometimes they upload the financial aid info there but don't send a notification email. happened to us and we almost missed it!

•I didn't even think about that! I'll have her log into all her portals tonight. Great suggestion!

One more thing to check - make sure all the schools were correctly listed on her FAFSA. You can log into studentaid.gov and view the SAR (Student Aid Report) to confirm which schools are receiving her data. If a school is missing, you can still add it.

•Just checked and all 6 schools are listed correctly. At least that part's right! I was worried for a minute.

After you make those calls, be prepared to submit additional verification documents if requested. About 30% of FAFSA filers get selected for verification, which requires submitting tax documents and other forms. This can delay your aid package if they need additional information. Ask specifically if they need anything else from you when you call.

•Good point. We haven't received any verification requests but I'll specifically ask about that when I call.

Don't panic - you're definitely not alone in this! As others have mentioned, this year has been particularly challenging due to FAFSA delays. I'd recommend a multi-pronged approach: 1) Call each school's financial aid office to confirm they received her data and ask about their timeline, 2) Check all student portals as suggested, and 3) Ask if they need any verification documents. Also, keep in mind that some schools are still waiting for updated FAFSA data from the Department of Education. Many are working with incomplete information and may send revised packages later. The key is staying proactive but not stressing too much - most families are in the same boat this year!

•This is such helpful advice! I'm feeling a lot better after reading everyone's responses. It sounds like we're definitely not the only ones dealing with delays this year. I'll start with calling the schools tomorrow and checking all the portals tonight. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences - this community is a lifesaver for first-time parents navigating this process!

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! My son's FAFSA was processed in February and we've been waiting on aid packages from 5 schools. What I've learned from calling around is that each school has their own internal processing timeline even after they receive the FAFSA data. Some schools told me they're still waiting for updated SAI calculations from the federal system due to all the technical issues this year. I'd definitely recommend calling - when I did, two schools told me they had everything and packages would be out "within the next 10 business days," while another school discovered they were missing a document I thought I'd already submitted. It's nerve-wracking but sounds like we're all in the same boat this cycle!

•Thanks for sharing your experience! It's so reassuring to know other families are going through the same thing. I'm definitely going to start making calls tomorrow morning. Your point about some schools still waiting for updated SAI calculations really makes sense given all the FAFSA issues this year. Did any of the schools give you a more specific timeline when you called, or was it mostly just "within 10 business days" type responses?

This thread is so helpful! We're in a similar situation - my daughter's FAFSA was processed in February and we're still waiting on packages from 4 out of 6 schools. Reading through everyone's experiences makes me realize we need to be more proactive about calling. One thing I wanted to add that our high school counselor mentioned is that some schools are also dealing with staffing shortages in their financial aid offices this year, which is contributing to the delays on top of all the FAFSA technical issues. She recommended keeping a spreadsheet with each school's financial aid office phone number and the date/outcome of each call so you can follow up systematically. I'm going to start making calls this week and will definitely ask about verification requirements and check all the student portals. Thanks everyone for sharing - it's such a relief to know we're not the only ones feeling stressed about this!

•The spreadsheet idea is brilliant! I wish I had thought of that earlier. We're dealing with the same situation - my daughter applied to 7 schools, got accepted to 5 so far, but only received 1 financial aid package. It's so stressful not knowing what the actual costs will be, especially with the May 1st deadline approaching. I'm definitely going to create a tracking spreadsheet today and start calling systematically. Your counselor's point about staffing shortages makes a lot of sense too - I hadn't considered that factor. Thanks for sharing that tip, it's going to help me stay much more organized with following up!
