FAFSA showing parent info as 'not submitted' - will this delay my son's financial aid?

Help! We completed my son's 2025-26 FAFSA application last week, including all the parent sections. But when we log into the studentaid.gov portal, it shows the parent information as 'not submitted' or 'not processed' (status shows pending). We definitely filled out all the required parent income fields and the contribution section. We're not planning on taking out any Parent PLUS loans - we just want him to qualify for his own federal aid and grants. Will this 'not submitted' status for the parent section prevent his application from being processed? His college priority deadline is coming up in 3 weeks and I'm worried this will hold everything up. Has anyone else dealt with this issue?

same thing happened with my daughters application!! the parent part said 'pending' for like 10 days even tho we submitted everything. her SAI score finally showed up eventually without us doing anything

That's a relief to hear! Did she get her financial aid package on time or was there a delay because of this issue?

The parent contribution information is necessary for the SAI calculation regardless of whether you're taking Parent PLUS loans. Without the parent section being fully processed, your son's FAFSA isn't complete, and schools won't be able to determine his aid eligibility. The system has been experiencing delays this cycle due to the FAFSA Simplification Act changes. A few things to check: 1. Did you and your spouse (if applicable) both create FSA IDs? 2. Did you e-sign the parent portion with your FSA ID? 3. Have you checked if there are any items in the 'Action Required' section? If everything looks correct on your end, it's likely just processing delays in the system.

Thank you for the detailed response! We both have FSA IDs and e-signed. There's nothing in the Action Required section, which is why I'm confused. I just don't want this to cause my son to miss out on aid opportunities if it's something we need to fix on our end.

This sounds like the same glitch my nephew had last month. The parent section said "not processed" for TWO WEEKS even though we filled everything out correctly. Total nightmare. The whole FAFSA system is broken this year with all these "simplification" changes that just made everything MORE COMPLICATED. Did you try calling the Federal Student Aid hotline? Good luck getting through - we tried for DAYS.

I did try calling twice but got disconnected after waiting for over an hour each time. It's so frustrating when there's no clear way to get this resolved!

Have you tried using the Claimyr service to get through to FAFSA? It saved me so much time when I had a similar issue last week. They basically hold your place in line and call you when an agent is available so you don't have to stay on hold forever. I watched their demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ and decided to try it since I was at my wit's end. Agent confirmed it was just a system delay on their end and nothing wrong with our application.

Yes, it worked for me! I was skeptical at first but they connected me with a real FAFSA agent who could actually see what was going on with our application. You can check their site at claimyr.com - definitely less painful than being on hold for hours.

I work at a college financial aid office, and I can tell you this is incredibly common right now. The "not submitted" parent section status is often just a display issue in the portal, not an actual problem with your application. From what we're seeing, most of these applications ARE actually processing correctly in the backend system even when the portal shows that status. My advice: 1. Take a screenshot of your confirmation page showing you completed the application 2. If you received a confirmation email, save that 3. Check if an SAI (Student Aid Index) number appears anywhere in your son's account - if it does, the application IS processing despite the status message 4. Contact your son's college financial aid office directly, as they can often see if the FAFSA data is coming through on their end even if the studentaid.gov portal isn't showing correctly If you're still concerned, you can request a FAFSA correction (even if you don't change anything) which sometimes triggers the system to update the status correctly.

Thank you so much for this insight from the college side! We do have the confirmation email, and I'll check for the SAI number. I'll also reach out to his college financial aid office tomorrow morning to see if they've received anything. The correction idea is clever - I might try that if nothing else works.

nyone else think its crazy how they completely redisigned the FAFSA and its STILL not working right?? my daughter and i spent 3 hrs filling everything out and the parent section was a complete disaster. kept saying my W-2 info was wrong when it WASNT. and now your saying even after submission theres these weird status problems?? no wonder kids are skipping college altogether!!!!

EXACTLY! This new "simplified" FAFSA is a DISASTER. They had THREE EXTRA MONTHS to get it right after the delay and it's still full of bugs. My sister's kids got completely different SAI calculations despite having identical financial situations. One qualified for a Pell Grant and the other didn't. Make it make sense!

Just wanted to update that we had the exact same issue with our daughter's FAFSA. The parent section showed as "not submitted" for almost two weeks, but then suddenly her SAI score appeared and everything was processed correctly. We didn't have to do anything - it just fixed itself. From what the financial aid office at her school told us, the system is batch processing applications and there's a disconnect between what you see in the portal and what's actually happening behind the scenes. They assured us that as long as you received a confirmation number when you initially submitted, your application is in the system and will eventually be processed. The priority deadline at her school was February 15, and even though the FAFSA wasn't fully processed until February 20, they still considered her for all aid programs since she had submitted before the deadline (we just had to send them the submission confirmation email as proof).

This is SO helpful to hear! Thank you for sharing your experience. I'll make sure to contact his school's financial aid office with our submission confirmation just to be safe. Hopefully ours will update soon like yours did.

Quick update based on recent Department of Education guidance: They've acknowledged the "parent information not processed" display issue and confirmed it's affecting many applicants. They stated that if you received a confirmation number and can see that confirmation in your FAFSA history, your application IS being processed correctly despite what the status shows. They're working on a fix for the display issue, but have advised schools to accept these applications as complete. As long as you have that confirmation, you should be fine for meeting priority deadlines.

That's a huge relief! Thank you for sharing this official update. I'll keep checking for the SAI score to appear, but it's good to know this is a known issue and not something we need to fix on our end.

I'm dealing with this exact same issue right now! My daughter's FAFSA shows the parent section as "not submitted" even though we completed everything two weeks ago. It's so stressful when you don't know if there's actually a problem or if it's just the system being glitchy. Reading through these responses is really reassuring though - it sounds like this is happening to a lot of families and most applications are actually processing correctly behind the scenes. I'm going to check for an SAI number like someone suggested and contact her school's financial aid office tomorrow. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!

You're definitely not alone in this! I went through the same panic when I saw that status. What really helped me was taking a screenshot of our confirmation page and keeping that confirmation email handy when I called the school. The financial aid officer was able to reassure me that they were seeing FAFSA data come through on their end even when the parent portal wasn't updating properly. It's such a relief when you realize it's just a display glitch and not an actual problem with your application!
