FAFSA says "processed" status but no SAI score or aid package yet - normal wait time?
So my 2025-2026 FAFSA application status finally changed from "submitted" to "processed" about 8 days ago, but I still haven't received my SAI score or heard anything from any of my schools. The studentaid.gov dashboard literally just shows "processed" with no other info. This is my first time applying so I have no clue if this is normal or if something's wrong? How long does it usually take between the "processed" status and actually getting your SAI score or aid package info from colleges? I'm getting really anxious because my state grant deadline is coming up soon and I need that FAFSA info to complete the application. Should I be contacting someone or just keep waiting?

Once your application shows "processed" it typically takes 3-7 business days for your SAI score to appear on your studentaid.gov account. Schools usually take 1-3 weeks after that to prepare and send financial aid packages, depending on their processing volume. If your state grant deadline is approaching, I'd recommend calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center to check if there's any issue with your application that isn't showing on the portal. Sometimes there are verification flags that don't immediately appear in your status.

•Thanks! So it's been 8 days since it changed to "processed" which sounds like I should have seen something by now. I'll try calling tomorrow. Do you know if there's a faster way to reach them? I tried calling once before and gave up after being on hold for over an hour.

Try using Claimyr to get through to a Federal Student Aid agent without the long hold times. I was in the exact same situation last month and was going crazy waiting. Used claimyr.com and they got me connected to an actual person in about 10 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. The agent confirmed there was a verification flag on my application that wasn't showing up on the portal, and I was able to submit the extra documents they needed right away.

•Wow, that's exactly what I need right now! I'll check it out. Did the agent actually have helpful info once you got through? And were you able to get your SAI score soon after that?

•Yeah, the agent was super helpful. She could see things on my application that weren't showing up on the portal. Turns out my tax info hadn't properly transferred from the IRS even though the site showed it had. Once I fixed that, my SAI showed up 2 days later.

I'm having the same issue but it's been 3 weeks since mine showed processed and still no SAI. I've called FSA four times and every agent tells me something different. First they said wait 3-5 business days, then they said there was an issue with my parents' tax information, then another said everything looks fine just keep waiting, and the last one said my application is actually still being processed despite what the website shows. I don't trust anything they say anymore.

•This is why the entire FAFSA system needs to be overhauled. They make these "simplified" changes that just create more confusion and backlog. Last year was bad enough but this year is a complete disaster. I've heard from multiple students at our college that the processed status means absolutely nothing.

There's definitely more variation in processing times this year with the new FAFSA system. Some important things to know: 1. The "processed" status sometimes appears before processing is fully complete - it's a known issue 2. Your SAI should appear in your studentaid.gov account before schools receive it 3. If your state grant deadline is approaching, contact your state grant agency directly - many are aware of the FAFSA delays and have adjusted their processes accordingly 4. Check with your schools' financial aid offices directly - they might be able to see information about your application that you can't see You're absolutely right to be proactive about this, especially with deadlines approaching.

•Thank you for this detailed info! I called my state grant agency yesterday and they said they're aware of delays but haven't extended the deadline. I'm going to try reaching FSA tomorrow and will also email my schools' financial aid offices. Fingers crossed something works out!

Mine was stuck on "processed" for 12 days and then suddenly I got an email saying I needed to submit verification documents. The studentaid.gov website NEVER showed any indication that verification was needed! After I submitted those, it took another 7 days for my SAI to appear. Then schools started sending packages about 10 days after that. The whole process took about a month from "processed" to actually having usable information.

•That's what I'm worried about - that there's some hidden verification requirement that I don't know about. How did you find out you needed to submit verification docs? Was it an email directly from FSA?

•Yes, I got an email from noreply@studentaid.gov telling me to log in to my account and check for required actions. But when I logged in, there was NOTHING there showing I needed to do anything! I had to call to find out what was going on. The agent told me to go to a specific section buried in the website where the verification requirements were listed. It was super frustrating.

I worked in a financial aid office until last year. Here's what most people don't realize: the "processed" status just means your application made it through the initial automated checks. It doesn't mean your application is ready for schools to use. There's a second phase of processing that FSA doesn't show on the student portal. My advice? Call FSA first thing in the morning (right when they open) and specifically ask if your application is "ready for schools to download" and if there are any "c-codes" on your application. Those are the magic words that will get you the real info about your status.

•Thank you so much for this insider info! I'll definitely use those exact phrases when I call. Really appreciate it!

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone at FSA! Turns out there was a verification flag on my application that wasn't showing up anywhere on the portal. I had to submit my parents' 2023 tax transcript and W-2s. The agent said once those are reviewed, my SAI should be generated within 3-5 business days. Just wanted to update in case anyone else is having similar issues. Always call and check if you're not seeing your SAI within a week of the "processed" status!

•Thanks for the update! This is unfortunately a common issue with the new system - verification flags that don't show up on the student portal. For anyone else reading this thread: about 30% of all FAFSA applications get selected for verification, and many students don't realize they've been selected because the notification system isn't working properly. Always worth calling if you don't see your SAI within 7-10 days of the "processed" status.

•This is exactly why I suggested asking about c-codes. A verification flag is one type of c-code. Glad you got it sorted out!
