FAFSA parent section skipping husband's info and jumping to signature page
Started working on the parent section of my daughter's 2025-2026 FAFSA last night and hit a weird glitch. When I got to the part where I needed to enter my husband's name and social security number, the system froze up so I just logged out. This morning I tried again and now it's completely skipping that entire section! It jumps straight from my information to the signature page without asking for ANY of my husband's details. Could this be because our tax information was already pulled through the IRS Data Retrieval Tool? I'm worried her application won't be complete without my husband's info since he's the primary earner. Has anyone else experienced this weird jump to the signature page?

Same thing happened on my son's application!! I think its becuz they changed how the parent section works this year. The new FAFSA is supposed to pull all the info automatically from IRS records once you link your taxes. Did u do the tax link part already?

•Yes, I did the tax link part and it seemed to work fine. But shouldn't it still ask for basic identifying information like his name and SSN? I'm worried they won't be able to properly match his tax records without that info explicitly entered.

This is actually normal with the new FAFSA. If you successfully completed the IRS Data Retrieval Tool step, the system already has your husband's information from your joint tax return. The redesigned FAFSA streamlines the process by eliminating redundant data entry. Since your taxes confirmed you're married filing jointly, the system doesn't need to re-ask for his SSN or name - that data is already verified through the IRS connection. You should still review the summary page carefully before signing to make sure all contributor information appears correct.

•That's a huge relief! I checked the summary page and you're right - his info is there. I was just expecting to have to enter everything manually like in previous years. Thanks for explaining - the new system is efficient but definitely confusing at first.

•Wait but how does the system know which person on the tax return is the student's parent vs step-parent??? My husband isn't biologically related to my daughter and I want to make sure the relationships are recorded correctly. The old FAFSA let you specify all of that!!!

I had exact same issue but found out there's actually a system bug affecting some FAFSA applications right now. For me, even though it LOOKED like it skipped the section, when I checked the summary page before signing, my husband's information was completely MISSING - not what you want! I had to call FSA to fix it, which was a nightmare (busy signals and disconnects for days). When I finally got through, they confirmed it's a known issue affecting applications where the tax retrieval initially works but then the system fails to properly display all sections for manual review. They had to reset my application section by section. Check your summary page VERY carefully to make sure all contributors are listed correctly before signing!

•Wow, that's concerning! I just double-checked the summary page again and thankfully both of us are listed as contributors with our correct information. But I'll definitely make sure to go through everything with a fine-tooth comb before signing. Thanks for the warning!

If anyone else is having trouble getting through to FSA about these FAFSA glitches, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an agent without the endless waiting. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. Saved me from smashing my phone against the wall after being disconnected five times in a row! The agent confirmed there are several display bugs they're working to fix, but most aren't affecting the actual data submission, just what sections get shown during entry.

•Does this actually work? I've been trying to reach FSA for two weeks about a similar issue where my husband's income is showing up as $0 in the summary even though we filed jointly and used the IRS retrieval tool. Super worried about our SAI calculation being wrong.

To address some concerns I'm seeing in this thread: 1. For joint tax filers: The system should pull both spouses' information automatically through the IRS Data Retrieval. It uses tax filing status to determine relationships. 2. For step-parent concerns: The current FAFSA automatically includes step-parents if they're married to the filing parent. There's no way to exclude step-parents anymore under the new FAFSA Simplification Act rules. 3. For verification: Always check the contributor section of your summary page before submitting. All parents/step-parents in the household should be listed with their information. 4. If information is missing: Take screenshots before submitting, then call FSA for assistance. Missing contributor info will definitely affect your SAI calculation. One more tip: After submission, wait 3-5 days then log back in to verify your application was processed correctly. You can make corrections if needed.

•This is incredibly helpful information, thank you! I'm feeling much better about proceeding now. I've taken screenshots of everything just in case something goes wrong during the final submission.

idk if this helps but i submitted my FAFSA like 3 weeks ago and had the exact same thing happen. it skipped a bunch of sections but when i got my SAI score everything was fine. i think the new system just works different than we're used to

•How long did it take to get your SAI score after submitting? I'm still waiting on mine and it's been 10 days!

I'm an academic advisor who's been helping students with FAFSA issues this cycle. What you're experiencing is part of the redesigned FAFSA process. Your tax information includes both you and your husband when you file jointly, so the system now skips redundant entry fields. However, there IS a technical issue affecting some applications where the summary page doesn't display all contributor information correctly. Before signing and submitting: 1. Download or screenshot the entire summary page 2. Verify BOTH parents' information appears in the contributor section 3. Check that income figures match what you'd expect from your tax return If anything is missing or incorrect, DO NOT SUBMIT until resolved with FSA. Fixing issues after submission is much more complicated than getting it right initially.

•is that why my son's confirmation page showed weird income numbers? our AGI was different than what showed up on the final page even tho we used the IRS tool thing.

•Yes, that could definitely be related. The new FAFSA is applying the Simplified Needs Test to more families, so certain income types might be excluded from your SAI calculation. However, if your entire AGI is wrong, that's a technical issue that needs correction. I recommend calling FSA to verify exactly what income was pulled from your tax return. Just be persistent - their phone lines are swamped right now.

After dealing with this exact issue, I finally got through to an FSA agent who explained what's happening. The system IS pulling your husband's data through the IRS function, but there's a display bug in the UI that makes it appear like you're skipping required sections. The agent confirmed that as long as: 1. Both you and your husband appear in the contributor section of the summary page 2. Your income figures roughly match what you filed on taxes (allowing for the new formula adjustments) Then your application IS complete and will be processed correctly. That said - I'd still absolutely review everything before submitting. The new system is much more automated but also has some serious technical issues they're still working through.

•Thank you for this detailed explanation! I've gone through the summary page in detail, and all our information is there correctly. It's just so confusing when the interface skips sections you expect to complete manually. I appreciate everyone's help navigating this!
