FAFSA application stuck - can't add spouse's SSN to complete signature page
I'm seriously freaking out about my FAFSA right now. I submitted most of it last month, but got an email saying I needed to go back and add my signature. No problem, right? WRONG. When I went back in to complete this "simple" task, I noticed my husband's information wasn't included at all! Now when I try to add his SSN and birthdate on the contributor page, the system just gives me an error saying "Please check back later" and won't let me continue. I've been trying for TWO DAYS straight and still get the same message. I can't move forward to the signature page because I'm stuck on this contributor information screen. My financial aid deadline is coming up fast and I'm panicking. Has anyone dealt with this specific FAFSA glitch? Any workarounds?

•Did you actually get through to someone on the phone? I tried calling yesterday and was on hold for an hour before I had to hang up for work ðŸ˜

This is a known issue with the 2025-2026 FAFSA system, particularly when adding contributor information after initial submission. The problem is that the system flags it as a potential identity verification issue. Unfortunately, the only reliable solution is to speak directly with an FSA representative who can manually override this hold on your account. They can either reset that section or add a note allowing you to proceed to the signature page without completing the contributor section (which you can then update later).

•Thank you for explaining! At least I know I'm not doing anything wrong. But how am I supposed to get through to them? I've called multiple times and can never reach an actual person.

I had this EXACT PROBLEM with my daughter's FAFSA last month!!! It's completely broken and the FSA help center is USELESS. I ended up having to call 15+ times before getting through to someone who could actually help. The "check back later" message has been there for weeks for some people - it's not actually going to resolve itself despite what the message implies. You NEED to talk to a human to fix this.

Had the same problem with adding my wife's info after starting the application. After days of frustration, I found a service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual FSA agent in about 20 minutes. They basically call and wait on hold for you, then connect you when a human answers. Saved me from completely losing my mind! Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The FSA agent was able to reset the contributor section so I could add my wife's info properly. Just make sure you have your FSA ID and all your info ready when they connect you.

•This sounds amazing! I've literally been trying to get through for days. Did they actually solve your problem once you got connected?

•Yes! The agent was able to see exactly what was happening with my application. They had to put some kind of override note in their system that released the hold on my contributor section. Took about 10 minutes once I got connected to the right department. Just be super clear about the error you're getting and that you need to add your spouse as a contributor.

This is happening because of a specific technical limitation in the new FAFSA system. When you initially submit without a contributor and then try to add one later, the system sometimes can't reconcile the "household size" you originally entered with the new contributor information. Here's what you need to do: 1. Contact Federal Student Aid directly (as others have suggested) 2. Ask specifically for a "contributor section reset" on your application 3. Mention that you're getting the "check back later" error when trying to add your spouse 4. Have your FSA ID, your spouse's SSN, and birthdate ready 5. They'll need to manually override this section After they fix it, wait at least 24 hours before trying again. The system needs time to process these manual changes. And don't worry - this won't affect your SAI calculation as long as you complete everything before your school's priority deadline.

•Thank you for such a detailed explanation! I'll definitely ask for the "contributor section reset" specifically. I'd been trying to navigate the help menu options but wasn't sure which one applied to my situation.

i dont even understand why they make this so complicated... like seriously my taxes show im married why do i have to manually enter all this info again when its literally in the irs database already? the whole point of the "simplified" fafsa was to pull tax info automatically lol what a joke

•You're absolutely right about the intent. The data retrieval tool is supposed to automatically import tax filing status and dependent information from the IRS. However, the new system requires explicit permission from each contributor (your spouse in this case) to access their tax information - this is why you need to add them manually first. It's a privacy protection measure, but the implementation has been problematic.

i had a problem with my daughters fafsa too but different error. turned out we needed to create a separate fsa id for her father even tho were divorced and he doesnt help with college. so frustrating!!!! maybe your spouse needs his own fsa id?

•My husband actually does have his own FSA ID already - we created it before I started the application. But the system isn't even letting me link his existing ID to my application! It's so maddening.

Update on my situation for those having similar problems - I finally got through using that Claimyr service I mentioned, and the FSA agent told me this is happening to a LOT of people right now. They're aware of the issue but don't have a system-wide fix yet, so they have to address cases individually. The agent had to basically reset a portion of my application so I could add my spouse properly. Just wanted to share in case others are still struggling with this!

•I tried the Claimyr service and it worked!! Finally got through to someone at FSA. They had to do some kind of manual override on my account, and now I can see the contributor page working properly. I was able to add my husband's information and move forward to the signature page. THANK YOU to everyone who suggested solutions! What a relief!

So glad to see you got it resolved! This thread has been incredibly helpful - I'm dealing with a similar issue where I can't add my parent's information as a contributor. The "check back later" error has been driving me crazy for days. I'm definitely going to try the Claimyr service based on everyone's recommendations here. It's reassuring to know that FSA agents can actually fix this with a manual override. Fingers crossed I can get through to someone soon before my deadline!
