FAFSA form glitch - cursor jumps to SSN field when entering spouse information

I'm trying to help my wife with her FAFSA application for the 2025-2026 year, but we've hit a weird technical problem. Whenever we get to the section where I need to input my information as her spouse, I type ONE letter in any field and the cursor automatically jumps to the SSN field! I've tried using different browsers (Chrome and Edge) but same problem. We can't complete the application because of this glitch. I'm not very tech-savvy so I'm completely stuck. Has anyone else run into this issue? Any suggestions would be really appreciated before her deadline passes next week!

I had this exact issue last month! It's actually a known bug in the new FAFSA system. Try these steps: 1. Clear your browser cache and cookies completely 2. Use Chrome in incognito mode 3. Make sure you're not using any autofill/password manager extensions For me, I found that my password manager was causing the field jumping. Once I disabled it temporarily, everything worked fine. The new FAFSA interface is super buggy with autofill programs.

Thank you! I'll try this tonight. We do have Norton password manager running, so maybe that's the problem. Really appreciate the quick response!

This sounds exactly like an accessibility feature accidentally being turned on. Check if you have any screen readers or keyboard navigation aids active. Also, what happens if you try to tab between fields instead of clicking? The new FAFSA system has been completely redesigned for the 2025-26 cycle and there are tons of bugs being reported with the contributor sections especially.

Hmm, we don't knowingly have any accessibility features on, but I'll check. When we try to tab between fields, it works for the first 2-3 fields and then starts jumping randomly. Really weird. I'll try the browser suggestions first and report back.

THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME!!!!! I was about to throw my computer out the window. The FSA people said it was a known issue and to try completing it on their mobile app instead of through the browser. Have you tried that?

We haven't tried the mobile app yet. That's a good suggestion! I'll download it and see if it works better. Thanks for the tip!

I work at a college financial aid office, and we're seeing this issue a lot since the FAFSA redesign. It's usually related to browser extensions or compatibility issues. Besides what others have suggested, try these steps: 1. Use the Firefox browser (seems to have fewer issues with the new FAFSA) 2. Disable ALL browser extensions completely 3. Make sure your browser is fully updated 4. Try using the site during off-peak hours (late night/early morning) The system gets overloaded during peak times and weird glitches happen. If you're still having trouble after trying these fixes, you might need to call FSA directly to report the issue.

Thank you so much for these detailed tips! I'll definitely try Firefox - we haven't attempted that browser yet. Do you know if there's a specific time when the site tends to be less busy? Like after 9pm or something?

In my experience, the system runs most smoothly between 11pm-6am Eastern time. Weekends are also generally better than weekdays. Good luck with the application!

If you're still having trouble after trying the browser fixes, I'd recommend using Claimyr to get through to an actual FSA agent on the phone. I was having a similar technical issue with the spouse contribution section and spent days trying to fix it myself. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in about 10 minutes who helped resolve it. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent was able to make notes on our application and gave me specific workarounds for the glitch. Saved me so much frustration!

Yes, it actually works! I was skeptical too, but after multiple failed attempts to reach someone, I tried it and was connected quickly. The FSA phone lines are completely overwhelmed with the new system rollout.

UPDATE: We tried incognito mode on Chrome AND disabled Norton password manager - IT WORKED! We were able to complete the spouse section without any cursor jumping. Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. For anyone else with this problem, definitely try disabling any password managers or autofill programs first.

Great news! Glad that solved it for you. The new FAFSA system is definitely more sensitive to browser extensions than the old one was.

my daughter had this problem too but in her case it was because she was using an older version of Safari. its amazing how poorly tested the new FAFSA system is when so many families depend on this for college!!!! govt should be embarrassed.

EXACTLY! They had THREE EXTRA MONTHS to test everything since they delayed the launch, and it's STILL full of bugs! And they wonder why people get frustrated with the financial aid process...SMH
