FAFSA parent SSN fix keeps getting delayed - any updates on March release?

I'm trying to complete my FAFSA for 2025-2026 but I've been waiting on this supposed update for parents without SSNs. The FAFSA website said they'd fix it in 'early March' but it's already the 15th and nothing! My dad doesn't have an SSN (he's a legal resident but not a citizen) and I can't move forward without this update. Now I'm worried about missing priority deadlines for my state schools. Has anyone heard anything about when they're ACTUALLY going to roll this out? Or found a workaround? Getting seriously anxious about this!

same boat here... my mom doesnt have ssn and im freaking out bc my school needs fafsa by april 1st or i lose scholarship eligibility. this is so frustrating!!

April 1st?? That's so soon! Have you tried calling them? I've been trying the help line all week but can't get through.

I work in a college financial aid office, and we're telling students to keep checking the FAFSA website daily. The last official update we received indicated the form update for parents without SSNs should be released by March 20th, but I wouldn't be surprised if it slips again. There have been numerous delays with the FAFSA Simplification rollout this year. In the meantime, I recommend you contact the financial aid offices at the schools you're applying to and explain the situation. Many institutions are extending their priority deadlines specifically for students affected by these FAFSA delays. They may also have institutional forms you can complete in the interim.

Thank you so much! I'll email my top schools today and explain the situation. It's just so stressful not knowing if this will affect my aid package.

This whole FAFSA rollout has been a NIGHTMARE!! I'm so sick of checking for updates every day. My daughter's in the same situation with her dad (green card, no SSN) and her college choices are pressuring her for the FAFSA. WHY didn't they test this system properly before launch???? They've had YEARS to prepare for these changes!

it's ridiculous how they keep pushing back deadlines like we don't have important decisions to make

Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to a FAFSA agent? I was stuck in the same situation (waiting for the non-SSN parent update) and couldn't get anyone on the phone for days. I found this service at claimyr.com that got me connected to a Federal Student Aid agent in like 20 minutes when I'd been trying for a week with no luck. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent I spoke with confirmed the update is still coming but couldn't give an exact date. At least I got documentation that I tried to complete the form and was prevented by their system issue, which my university accepted as proof I wasn't just procrastinating.

I hadn't heard of this! I'll check it out because I'm desperate to talk to someone official at this point. Did they give you any kind of official documentation you could share with your school?

The agent emailed me a case number and brief statement confirming my application was on hold pending the system update. It wasn't super detailed but my school's financial aid office accepted it as proof I was on top of things. Better than nothing!

I can confirm this is still an ongoing issue with the FAFSA system. The Federal Student Aid office has been working to implement several fixes to the new FAFSA form, and the non-SSN parent contributor functionality is one of them. The latest official update indicates they're still targeting March, but there's no specific date. In addition to contacting your schools as someone suggested, I recommend doing the following: 1. Take screenshots of your incomplete FAFSA showing where you're stuck at the parent SSN section 2. Document all your attempts to complete the form 3. Save the Federal Student Aid announcements about the pending fix Many schools are creating exceptions and extensions specifically for students affected by the FAFSA system issues. The Department of Education has also instructed schools to be flexible with their institutional deadlines this year because of the nationwide FAFSA problems.

This is really helpful, thank you! I've taken screenshots but hadn't thought to save the announcements too. Do you work in financial aid? You seem to know a lot about how this process works.

I'm a college counselor at a high school. We've been dealing with FAFSA issues for hundreds of students this year, so I've unfortunately become very familiar with all the problems! The good news is that schools are being understanding and flexible because they know none of this is students' fault.

Missing priority deadlines doesn't mean you won't receive any aid. You'll still be eligible for federal aid like Pell Grants and Direct Loans. However, you might miss out on some university-specific grants or scholarships that have earlier deadlines. That's why it's crucial to contact your schools directly and explain your situation. Most are making accommodations this year due to the FAFSA issues.

Actually my cousin works for fsa and she said they might push it back til april they are having system wide issues with the contributor stuff and the non ssn parents is just one of many problems. But she said they are prioritizing it because so many immigrants are affected. If u call enough times you might get through to someone who can put a note on ur account.

APRIL?!? That's absolutely ridiculous. Some states have already passed their aid deadlines. They should have NEVER launched this system with so many obvious problems.

Good news! There's an update on the Federal Student Aid website as of yesterday. The parent non-SSN issue should be fixed by March 23rd according to their latest timeline. They're rolling out the update in phases starting tomorrow. I'd recommend checking your FAFSA account daily starting this weekend.
