FAFSA loan servicer nightmare - being hung up on when verifying PSLF employment certification

I'm about to lose my mind with this Public Service Loan Forgiveness nonsense. I submitted my employer certification form for PSLF FOUR WEEKS ago through the studentaid.gov portal, and it's still showing as 'processing.' I've tried calling Mohela (my loan servicer) THREE times this week, waited 45+ minutes each time, only to get disconnected right after explaining my situation. Then I tried the Department of Education's Federal Student Aid line today, waited another hour, and the EXACT same thing happened! The agent asked for my info, put me on hold, and then the call dropped. Is this happening to anyone else? How are we supposed to verify our PSLF applications if no one will actually stay on the line? At this rate, I'll never get confirmation that my employment qualifies. Any advice on how to actually get through to a human who won't disconnect me?

6 times?! I've already called 5 times between both agencies! This is getting ridiculous. Did she do anything different on that 6th call to finally get help?

The PSLF employment certification process has been extremely backlogged since they expanded eligibility requirements. Many servicers are experiencing huge call volumes and system issues. Here's what I recommend: 1. Track all your attempts to contact them (dates, times, who you spoke with) 2. Try calling right when they open (usually 8am EST) to avoid peak volumes 3. Send a detailed follow-up email through your studentaid.gov account message center 4. Consider submitting a complaint through the CFPB if this continues Your employment certification form should take 30-45 days to process under normal circumstances, but many are taking 60+ days currently. The disconnections are frustrating but unfortunately common right now.

Thank you for these suggestions! I've been trying mid-day calls thinking that would be less busy, but I'll try the 8am approach. Is there any way to check the status online besides just seeing "processing"?

OMG THE EXACT SAME THING KEEPS HAPPENING TO ME!! I've been trying to verify my nonprofit employment for 2 months and either get disconnected or transferred between departments until someone eventually hangs up. It's like they're trained to get rid of PSLF applicants!! The whole system is designed to make us give up. I'm convinced they don't WANT to forgive our loans.

Have you tried using Claimyr? I was dealing with the same nightmare trying to get through to someone at Federal Student Aid about my PSLF certification. After getting disconnected three times, I found this service that basically waits on hold for you and then calls you when they have a live agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ It was the only way I actually managed to speak with someone who stayed on the line long enough to check my employment certification status. Worth considering if you're still having trouble getting through.

I've never heard of this service before. Did it really work? I'm willing to try anything at this point if it means I don't have to waste another day on hold just to get disconnected.

I spent 11 years trying to get PSLF to work for me, and the employment verification was always the most frustrating part. One thing that helped me was documenting everything meticulously. Every call, email, form submission - with dates, times, and names if possible. Another tip: the FSA Ombudsman Group can sometimes intervene when you're facing these kinds of systematic barriers. They're specifically there to help resolve persistent issues with your federal student loans. For the immediate issue with your employment certification, I'd suggest: 1. Continue following up, but via multiple channels (phone, email, portal) 2. Double-check that your employer filled out their portion of the form 100% correctly 3. Make sure your employer's EIN matches exactly what they've used on tax forms Small discrepancies can cause delays in processing. Hang in there - the system is frustrating but eventually works if you're persistent.

Thank you for the detailed advice. I'll definitely start documenting everything better. I hadn't thought about checking the EIN - my employer has multiple locations so maybe that's causing confusion. I'll look into the Ombudsman Group too!

The PSLF program has been significantly improved since the October 2021 waiver and subsequent IDR account adjustment, but the implementation has been rocky. Beyond what others suggested, contact your congressional representative's constituent services. Seriously. I had a similar issue with employment certification stuck in limbo for months. After one email to my congressman's office, I received a call from a senior specialist at FSA within 48 hours who personally reviewed my account and resolved the issue. Congressional inquiries get prioritized in ways regular customer service calls don't. Your tax dollars pay for this service - use it!

This is brilliant advice!! I never thought about contacting my congressional rep for FAFSA issues. Will definitely try this approach. The system is clearly broken when we need to go to Congress just to get basic service...

you probably have some error in your application thats why theyre dropping calls lol. check if you put the right EIN number and make sure all dates match up with your employer records. also mohela website has chat feature thats way better than calling, i got my pslf questions answered in like 15 mins

I'm pretty sure all my information is correct, but I'll double-check. I tried the chat feature but kept getting an error saying "all agents are currently busy" and it would close automatically. Did you access the chat at a specific time of day?

UPDATE: I used Claimyr earlier today after seeing recommendations here, and FINALLY got through to someone at Federal Student Aid who stayed on the line! They confirmed my employment certification was received but flagged for a signature verification issue (my employer used electronic signature instead of wet signature). They're sending me a correction form and expediting the review. Such a relief to actually get an answer! Highly recommend this approach if you're still having trouble.

That's amazing! I'm definitely going to try this tomorrow. Just having an actual answer about what's happening would be such a relief, even if there's still work to do. Thanks for the update!

I'm dealing with something similar right now! My PSLF employment certification has been "under review" for 6 weeks. I've called Mohela twice and gotten disconnected both times after waiting forever on hold. It's so frustrating because I work for a qualifying nonprofit and just need someone to confirm my paperwork is correct. Reading through these responses gives me hope though - I'm going to try the early morning call strategy and maybe look into that Claimyr service. Has anyone had luck with submitting a complaint through the CFPB? I'm wondering if that might get their attention faster than just calling repeatedly.
