FAFSA impacts of student loan servicer change from Navient to MOHELA - payment increases?

Just got a letter saying my federal student loans are being transferred from Navient to MOHELA. Has anyone else gone through this transition? I'm in the middle of my FAFSA application for my daughter and I'm worried this will mess up the parent loan information I already submitted. Do I need to update my FAFSA with the new loan servicer? And has anyone noticed their monthly payments increasing after a transfer? I'm already stressed about helping my daughter with college costs, and this sudden change has me worried about how it might affect our financial aid eligibility. Thanks for any insight!

Mine got switched to MOHELA last year too. It's so annoying how they keep changing servicers!! My payment actually went up by $32/month after the switch and when I called nobody could explain why. Make sure u check your repayment plan cuz sometimes they reset it to standard instead of keeping your income-based plan. I don't think it affects FAFSA tho since the loan itself is still federal, just a different company managing it.

Thanks for the heads up about the payment plan! I'm on income-based repayment and definitely don't want that to change. Did you have to reapply for IBR with MOHELA or did it transfer over automatically?

The loan servicer change from Navient to MOHELA will not impact your FAFSA application. The Department of Education contracts with different loan servicers, but the loans themselves remain federal student loans. You do not need to update your FAFSA with the new servicer information as the Federal Student Aid system automatically tracks these changes internally. Regarding payment changes: By regulation, your repayment plan, interest rate, and loan terms should remain exactly the same after transfer. However, I always recommend: 1. Download all payment records from Navient before the transfer completes 2. Verify your payment plan remains the same once MOHELA takes over 3. Check that any autopay settings transfer correctly (sometimes they don't) 4. Confirm your payment due date hasn't shifted

This is SO helpful, thank you! I'll download my Navient records right away. I've been on autopay for years so I definitely don't want that getting messed up. It's a relief to know it won't affect my daughter's FAFSA at least.

ya I had my loans go to mohela too. they're moving everybody. my roommate also navient → mohela. I dont think it matters for fafsa, the actual loan doesnt change just who u pay. but check ur payment amount!! mine went up $18 for no reason & took 3 months to fix. so annoying.

Same exact thing happened to my sister! Her payment randomly increased by about $20 and she spent HOURS on the phone trying to get it fixed. The FAFSA system doesn't care about your servicer though - just the loan amount.

I work in financial aid at a community college, and we've been helping many parents through this exact situation. The Navient to MOHELA transfer has been happening for thousands of borrowers as part of the Department of Education's servicer changes. For FAFSA purposes: - This will NOT affect your daughter's aid eligibility - You do NOT need to update your FAFSA (the federal database tracks these transfers) - Your loan balance and history remain unchanged However, I've seen several issues with the transfer process: - Income-driven repayment plans sometimes don't transfer correctly - Autopay arrangements often need to be re-established - Payment due dates can shift by a few days - PSLF qualifying payment counts sometimes show incorrectly initially I suggest creating your MOHELA online account as soon as possible to verify everything transferred correctly.

Thank you so much for this detailed information! I'm relieved it won't affect my daughter's FAFSA. I'm going to set up my MOHELA account today and triple-check that my IBR plan transfers correctly. Hoping this transition goes smoothly!

the government keeps switching servicers because they're corrupt and getting kickbacks from these loan companies!!! navient was sued for predatory practices so they're trying to hide behind mohela now. your payments are going to go up guaranteed because that's how they make money off us. the whole system is designed to keep us in debt. i've been paying for 11 years and somehow owe MORE than when i started????

While there have been legal issues with Navient, the servicer changes are actually part of the Next Gen initiative to improve federal loan servicing. It's not about hiding or increasing payments - the terms of your loans remain legally the same regardless of servicer. If your balance is increasing despite payments, you might want to check if you're on an income-driven plan where the payments are less than the accruing interest. That's a common reason balances grow despite regular payments.

Hey! Just went through this last semester. The transfer doesn't affect your FAFSA at all, but good luck trying to reach MOHELA by phone to sort out any issues! I spent DAYS trying to get through to them when my autopay didn't transfer correctly. I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual human at MOHELA in about 20 minutes instead of waiting for hours or getting disconnected. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Just make sure to check that your payment plan transferred correctly. They somehow lost my income-based repayment info and tried to put me on a standard plan that was $170 higher!

Thanks for the suggestion! I've already tried calling MOHELA twice and got disconnected both times. I'll check out that service - I definitely need to talk to someone directly about making sure my IBR plan transfers correctly. Did they fix your payment plan issue quickly once you got through to someone?

Yes! Once I actually got through to a real person, they fixed it in about 10 minutes. They could see my previous IBR documentation from Navient in their system, they just hadn't applied it correctly during the transfer. The frustrating part was just reaching someone who could help!

I experienced the Navient to MOHELA transfer about 8 months ago. Here's what you should know: 1. This won't affect your FAFSA or your daughter's financial aid eligibility at all. Federal loan information is tracked by your SSN in the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), not by servicer. 2. By law, your loan terms cannot change during a servicer transfer. Same interest rate, same payment plan, same forgiveness progress. 3. What DOES often happen: - You'll need to set up a new online account with MOHELA - You'll need to re-establish autopay (this doesn't transfer automatically) - Your due date might shift slightly - You'll get new payment instructions 4. If you notice ANY changes to your payment amount, immediately contact MOHELA and reference the "servicing continuity" requirements from the Department of Education. The transition was relatively smooth for me, but it does require some proactive monitoring on your part.

I wish mine had been smooth!! took like 4 months to get everything fixed and they kept giving me different answers every time I called 🙄

Thank you for breaking this down so clearly. I'll definitely watch for those issues you mentioned. I'm glad to hear your transition went smoothly - hoping for the same!

Oh wow, that would be a nice surprise! But I won't hold my breath lol. Thanks for letting me know about redoing the account setup. I'll start getting that ready now.
