FAFSA corrections keep timing out on parent portal but worked on student's - finally got through!
After weeks of frustration, I FINALLY managed to submit FAFSA corrections for my son! The weird thing is my son could log in and make his corrections just fine this morning, but when I tried to access the parent portal to finish my part, the system kept crashing or showing the dreaded 'session timeout' message. I must have tried at least 15-20 times throughout the day, getting more stressed with each attempt since our college's priority deadline is Friday. Just wanted to share that persistence paid off - about 30 minutes ago the portal finally let me complete everything. If you're hitting technical glitches, don't give up! Keep trying different times of day. Such a relief to have our 2025-2026 application fully corrected and submitted!

I've been trying to fix our SAI calculation for DAYS!! The studentaid.gov site keeps freezing whenever I try to update our W-2 information. Did you try using a different browser? I'm desperate at this point because we need to submit verification docs after corrections and I can't even get that far.

β’I actually switched from Chrome to Firefox and that seemed to help! Also found that trying after 8pm when traffic might be lower worked better. Hang in there!

same here!! the parent portal is ALWAYS worse than the student side. my daughter finished her part two weeks ago but it took me 5 separate days of trying to get my corrections submitted. nobody talks about how the parent contributor section is so much buggier than the student side π

β’The parent portal issues are actually a known problem with the new FAFSA system. The Federal Student Aid office has acknowledged that parent contributors often experience more technical issues than student applicants. They're working on fixes, but in the meantime, clearing your cache and cookies can help, and so can using the site during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening).

This is happening to many families with the new FAFSA. The parent contributor portal has been experiencing higher traffic and more technical issues than the student side. If you're still having problems, try these steps: 1. Clear your browser cache and cookies completely 2. Use a private/incognito browsing window 3. Try accessing the site during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening) 4. Make sure you're using your own FSA ID credentials, not your child's 5. If possible, use a wired connection rather than WiFi Also, take screenshots of any errors you encounter. If you miss your school's priority deadline due to these technical issues, you can submit those as evidence when requesting deadline extensions.

I had a similar experience but it was actually worse for my daughter's part. We ended up having to wait about 10 days before her corrections would go through, but my parent contribution section worked on the first try. Is anyone else finding that the system is less reliable when trying to make corrections versus the initial application?

β’YES! The initial FAFSA submission went through fine back in January, but the correction process has been a nightmare. I think it's because a lot of people are making corrections at the same time since SAI scores are coming back and colleges are requesting more information. The system just can't handle the load.

I had to call FSA directly after trying for two weeks to submit our income verification documents. Wait times were insane (over 2 hours!), but I finally got through using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It lets you skip the phone queue for Federal Student Aid. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent told me there's a massive backlog of correction submissions right now, and suggested trying between 2am-4am EST when server load is lowest (seriously). After calling, my corrections magically started working the next day.

β’Is that service legit? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. My daughter's financial aid package is on hold until these corrections go through.

β’Totally legit - it basically holds your place in line so you don't have to stay on hold forever. The FSA agent I talked to walked me through some verification issues too. Definitely worth it considering how stressed I was about missing deadlines.

As a financial aid counselor, I can share that the technical issues with the FAFSA parent portal are widespread this cycle. The new system is experiencing growing pains, especially during high-traffic periods when families are making corrections after receiving their initial SAI calculations. Some additional troubleshooting tips: 1. Ensure your browser is fully updated 2. Try using a desktop/laptop instead of mobile devices 3. Double-check your FSA ID hasn't expired (they need renewal) 4. If you're getting an error on a specific form section, try saving partial progress and returning later Also important: If technical difficulties cause you to miss institutional deadlines, contact your school's financial aid office immediately. Many schools are offering flexibility specifically because of these known FAFSA technical issues.

β’Thanks for this info! I was wondering if schools would be flexible about deadlines given all these problems. Good to know they're aware of the issues and making accommodations.

has anyone else noticed that the parent contribution calculator seems WAY off this year?? our family income didn't change much but our expected contribution nearly doubled with this new SAI system π©

β’The new SAI (Student Aid Index) calculation is indeed different from the old EFC formula. It uses different income protection allowances and asset calculations. Some families are seeing higher contributions while others are seeing lower ones. If your calculated SAI seems significantly off, I'd recommend scheduling an appointment with your school's financial aid office to discuss professional judgment options.

β’So happy it worked for you! What a relief, right? This whole process is stressful enough without the technical problems.
