FINALLY conquered my FAFSA after almost taking a gap year - success story!
You guys, I want to SCREAM from the rooftops - I just submitted my FAFSA after the most stressful 3 weeks of my life!!! I seriously almost gave up and decided to take a gap year because the whole process was driving me insane. My parents are divorced and my dad refuses to provide his tax info, which made everything 10x harder. I kept getting stuck on the contributor section and the system kept timing out whenever I tried to explain my situation. But I did it!!! I finally got my SAI score (it's higher than I wanted but whatever) and completed my state aid application too. For anyone else struggling with parents who won't cooperate, I finally got a dependency override by working with my school's financial aid office. Thank you to everyone who responded to my panicked posts. Your advice saved me from giving up completely. For those still working on applications, DONT GIVE UP! The 2025-2026 FAFSA is a beast, but you can do it!

Congratulations! That's a huge accomplishment, especially with the contributor complications. Dependency overrides are notoriously difficult to get approved, so well done navigating that process! Did your school's financial aid office require specific documentation for the override? This information might help others in similar situations.

•Thank you!!! Yes they made me submit a personal statement explaining my situation with my dad, plus two letters from "professional third parties" (I used my therapist and my high school counselor). I also had to provide my mom's tax info and prove I don't receive financial support from my dad. It took almost 2 weeks for them to approve it!

•Omg yes, verification was my worst nightmare! I got selected for it right after I submitted and had to provide like 5 different documents. Every time I uploaded something they'd ask for something else. The most frustrating part was trying to reach someone at Federal Student Aid to explain what was going on!

It's great to hear success stories like yours! The dependency override process is particularly challenging with the new FAFSA system. For others facing similar issues with uncooperative parents, here's what helps expedite the process: 1. Contact your school's financial aid office EARLY in the process 2. Be specific about your family situation (divorce, estrangement, etc.) 3. Gather documentation before beginning the application 4. Keep copies of ALL communications 5. Follow up regularly Also worth noting: your SAI might be higher than expected, but remember many schools have institutional aid that isn't solely based on your FAFSA results. Be sure to check if your schools require the CSS Profile as well.

•This happened to my sister too! Her sai was super high but she still got decent aid at 2 schools because they had their own formulas. definitely check with each school!!!

OMG THE SYSTEM TIMING OUT IS THE WORST. I swear I tried 12 times to submit my parent contribution section before it finally went through. The 2025-2026 FAFSA system is GARBAGE. Glad you finally got it done!

•The system timeout issues have been a persistent problem since the FAFSA simplification rollout. For anyone experiencing this, I recommend completing your application during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening), using a wired internet connection rather than Wi-Fi, and having all your documents ready before starting. Also, save your progress after completing each section! The system automatically times out after 20 minutes of inactivity.

I was in the same boat last month - divorced parents, one refusing to provide info. Such a nightmare. I actually had to use Claimyr (claimyr.com) to finally get through to a real person at Federal Student Aid. I kept getting disconnected or waiting for hours on the regular line, but Claimyr got me through to an agent in about 10 minutes who explained exactly what documentation I needed for a dependency override. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Between that call and working with my school's financial aid office, I finally got everything sorted out. Definitely worth it to actually speak to a human being who can help navigate the system.

•Yes! It actually works. I was super skeptical at first, but after my fifth time getting disconnected after waiting on hold for over an hour, I was desperate. The agent I got was really helpful and knew exactly what to do for my situation. Totally saved me from missing my school's priority deadline.

•Thanks! I was SO close to just giving up. Out of curiosity, what happened during your gap year? Did you end up going to school the next year?

•yeah i did but i lost momentum and some scholarships that were only for first time freshmen straight from high school. plus had to do the whole fafsa thing again the next year anyway lol. not worth it!!

Your persistence is commendable! For anyone else struggling with the contributor section, particularly with divorced parents, there are specific protocols to follow: 1. The parent you lived with the most during the past 12 months is your custodial parent for FAFSA purposes 2. If time was split equally, the parent who provided more financial support is considered custodial 3. Only the custodial parent (and current spouse if remarried) needs to provide information 4. Non-custodial parents' information is NOT required for the FAFSA (though it may be for the CSS Profile) If you're seeking a dependency override, documentation is critical. Each school handles these differently, but most require: - Personal statement - Professional third-party documentation (counselors, clergy, social workers) - Any relevant court documents - Proof of self-sufficiency The 2025-2026 FAFSA has streamlined some aspects, but these fundamental requirements remain consistent.

•This is such good information! I wish I'd known this earlier in the process. My situation was extra complicated because I technically lived with my dad slightly more (like 52% of the time), but he provides almost no financial support. The financial aid officer had to make a special determination in my case.

I'm still waiting for my SAI score after submission. Been 2 weeks already. How long did yours take to show up? The waiting is driving me CRAZY.

•Mine took almost 10 days! I was checking the studentaid.gov portal like 5 times a day 😂 But once I got the SAI, everything else moved pretty quickly. Hang in there!

•The processing time for SAI calculation has been averaging 7-14 days for the 2025-2026 FAFSA cycle, though it can extend to 3+ weeks during peak submission periods (December-February). If you're approaching the 3-week mark without receiving your SAI, I'd recommend contacting Federal Student Aid directly. Processing delays can sometimes indicate there's an issue with your application that needs attention.

THE NEW FAFSA IS LITERAL TORTURE. I had to submit FOUR TIMES because it kept giving me errors about my parent's W-2 information not matching IRS records or something?? Even though we put in EXACTLY what was on the tax forms. The whole system is designed to make us fail I swear.

•The direct data exchange with the IRS (which is part of the FAFSA Simplification Act changes) has definitely caused confusion. The most common reason for these mismatches is entering information manually that doesn't precisely match the IRS records - even small differences in employer names or slight variations in numbers can trigger these errors. Using the direct transfer tool whenever possible helps avoid these issues. If you've already tried that and still encounter problems, it might be worth requesting your tax transcript directly from the IRS to see exactly what's in their system.
