FAFSA account creation stuck between steps 6-7 after SSN correction - system won't progress
I'm at my wit's end with the studentaid.gov website! I accidentally transposed two numbers on my son's SSN when initially creating his FAFSA account. Now I'm trying to start over with the correct SSN, but the system keeps freezing at the same spot - between steps 6 and 7 during account creation. I click 'agree' to the terms and hit 'complete' but absolutely nothing happens. No error message, no progress to the next screen, just... nothing. This exact same thing happened last time and I spent WEEKS trying to fix it. Eventually it randomly worked one day with no explanation. Has anyone else dealt with this SSN correction nightmare? Any tricks to get past this frozen screen? The October deadline is coming up fast and I'm getting desperate!

SAME PROBLEM HERE!!! Been stuck trying for 4 days now. This website is sooooo glitchy this year. I just keep trying different browsers n different times of day. No luck yet. Totally ridiculous!!

ā¢At least I'm not alone! Which browsers have you tried? I've done Chrome and Edge so far. Maybe I'll try Firefox tonight?

This is a relatively common issue when correcting SSNs in the system. Here's what worked for me: 1. Clear your browser cache completely 2. Try using a private/incognito window 3. Use a different device if possible (desktop instead of mobile) 4. Try during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening) Also, double check that you're using the exact same email as the previous attempt. Sometimes the system flags duplicate emails with different SSNs as potential fraud and silently blocks progress.

ā¢Thank you! I didn't think about the email being the same - that might be the issue. I've been using the same one from the first attempt. Should I try with a completely different email address?

Yes, definitely try a different email. The system often has trouble when you use the same email with a different SSN, even if you're correcting an error. Create a brand new email account specifically for this application.

ā¢Will do that tonight. It's so frustrating they don't explain any of this in their error messages... or even HAVE error messages!

i had this exact problem and what fixed it was turning off my VPN. apparently the fafsa site doesnt like it when your IP address keeps changing or something. worth a try if ur using one

ā¢I'm not using a VPN but that's good to know! I wonder if our home network setup is causing similar issues...

Are you using autofill for any of the form fields? That caused my similar issue - the website wasn't recognizing autofilled fields even though they looked correct on screen. I had to manually type everything and then it worked.

ā¢OMG that might be it! I do have autofill enabled for everything. I'll try disabling it and manually entering all the info.

I've helped several families resolve this exact issue. The problem is usually one of these: 1. Browser compatibility - their system works best with Chrome 2. Cached login data causing conflicts 3. Session timing out without notification 4. The FAFSA system's validation process for corrected SSNs Try this specific sequence: clear all browsing data (including cookies and cache), restart your computer, use Chrome in incognito mode, and create the account using a different email address. Also, don't stop at any point during the process - complete it in one sitting. If you're still having issues after trying everything suggested here, you might need to call FSA directly. Wait times can be frustrating, but services like Claimyr (claimyr.com) can help you skip the wait. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ showing how they can connect you directly to an agent. I used this last year when dealing with a similar FAFSA account validation issue.

ā¢Thank you for such detailed advice! I'm going to try the sequence you suggested tonight. If that doesn't work, I'll check out that service. The thought of being on hold for hours with FSA makes me want to scream.

ā¢I'll try the back/forward trick! And maybe set an alarm for like 5 AM to try when nobody else is on the site š©

The FAFSA system gets incredibly bogged down in September and October. Their servers simply can't handle the traffic volume during peak filing season. I've been through this four times with my kids! One trick that hasn't been mentioned: try accessing the site using your phone's cellular data instead of your home wifi. Sometimes ISP routing or security settings can interfere with certain government websites.

ā¢That's a great suggestion! I'll try using my phone data as a hotspot for my laptop. And yes, I'm realizing I picked the worst possible time to deal with this correction issue.

UPDATE: IT WORKED!!! Combination of things that finally got me through: using Chrome incognito mode + creating a brand new email + manually typing all fields (no autofill) + using my phone's hotspot instead of home wifi. Plus I did it at 5:30 AM when server traffic was probably low. THANK YOU ALL for your suggestions! Now on to actually completing the FAFSA itself... š

ā¢Great news! And thanks for coming back to share what worked - that combination of solutions will definitely help others facing the same issue. Good luck with the rest of the application!
