Do I need to correct spouse's DOB error on 2024-25 FAFSA to submit 2025-26 application?

I'm in the middle of filling out the 2025-26 FAFSA and just realized we made a pretty serious error on last year's form. My husband's birth date was entered incorrectly on our 2024-25 FAFSA (somehow the month and day got swapped). We already received our aid package for this year based on that application, but now I'm worried about submitting the new FAFSA with the correct information. Do I need to go back and correct the error on the 2024-25 form even though we've already received our aid? Will having different birth dates on consecutive applications trigger some kind of fraud alert? I'm freaking out a little because his birthday is pretty important identifying information, and I don't want it to seem like we're submitting false information or have someone else's data mixed in.

Yep, definitely fix that 2024-25 FAFSA ASAP! I had a similar issue where my mom's SSN had a typo and it caused a HUGE headache. The financial aid office ended up freezing our entire package until we fixed it, even though we'd already been awarded. Don't risk it!!

Oh no, that sounds awful! Did they make you repay anything or just freeze future disbursements? We've already received and spent the first semester's aid...

You should submit a correction to your 2024-25 FAFSA, but there's no need to panic. Demographic corrections like a birth date won't typically affect your SAI calculation or aid eligibility. The correction process is straightforward - just log into studentaid.gov, select the 2024-25 application, and use the 'Make FAFSA Corrections' option to update the birth date. After submitting the correction, I'd recommend contacting your school's financial aid office to let them know about the update. This is a common error and they deal with it routinely.

Thank you! That's really reassuring. I'll get the correction submitted today and then email our financial aid office to let them know what happened.

I made a similar mistake last year and trying to get through to someone at FSA was IMPOSSIBLE. I kept getting stuck in phone loops for WEEKS. Finally found Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me through to an actual human at the FSA help desk in about 10 minutes. They have a video demo here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent confirmed that birthdate errors need to be fixed on both applications but assured me it wouldn't affect my aid as long as all other info matched correctly.

I can second this - accidentally entered my birthday as 1998 instead of 1988 in my FAFSA last year (fat-fingered the keyboard) and couldn't get through to FSA for DAYS. Used Claimyr too and it was worth it to skip that horrible waiting.

Thank you both! I was worried about wasting hours on hold. I'll check out that site if I run into issues getting through to someone.

Actually, this is more important than some are suggesting. While it likely won't affect your SAI calculation, discrepancies in identifying information between FAFSA years can trigger verification flags. When you correct the 2024-25 form, also submit documentation to your school's financial aid office showing the correct birth date (driver's license copy, etc.). The concern isn't just about aid calculation but identity verification in the FSA system. Having mismatched identifying information across years can complicate future applications, loan processing, and even loan repayment down the road.

That's a good point about verification flags. I was planning to submit his driver's license copy anyway just to be safe. Should I also be contacting our loan servicer about this, or will the FAFSA correction be enough?

The FAFSA correction should propagate through the system, but it doesn't hurt to be proactive with your loan servicer too. Just send them a brief email explaining the correction - they may not need to take action, but it documents that you've addressed the error.

The same thing happened with my daughter's FAFSA last year but we didn't catch it until after she graduated 😱 Her birth year was wrong by 10 years! Nobody ever flagged it and all her loans processed fine. But we're having MAJOR problems now with loan repayment because her identity can't be verified properly. Don't be us!!!

Oh wow, that sounds like a nightmare! Definitely motivating me to get this fixed immediately. Thanks for sharing your experience.

BTW make sure you check EVERYTHING else on the old form too while you're at it. If there's one mistake there could be others! Take it from someone who had to redo their entire verification process because of dumb little errors 😫

That's good advice. I'll do a full review of everything when I go in to make the correction. Thanks!

For anyone else reading this thread with similar issues - here's a quick checklist for handling demographic corrections on prior year FAFSAs: 1. Submit the correction through studentaid.gov ASAP 2. Notify your school's financial aid office in writing 3. Provide supporting documentation if requested 4. Check if verification is needed (usually only if your SAI changes) 5. Review current year application for accuracy before submitting Most biographical corrections don't impact your aid eligibility, but they're important for proper record-keeping in the federal system.

This is super helpful! I just submitted the correction and sent an email to our financial aid office with a copy of his ID attached. They replied quickly and said it shouldn't affect our current aid at all, just as you suggested. Thank you so much for the guidance!
