FAFSA parent portal won't let me update husband's incorrect DOB - will phone support fix this?

Has anyone had to deal with incorrect parent info on the FAFSA website? My husband's date of birth is wrong on his parent FSA ID account, but weirdly it still shows his old Pell grant history and his identity was verified successfully. When we try to update the DOB field, it's completely grayed out and won't let us change it. I'm worried this might cause problems later since his DOB doesn't match his Social Security info, but the system accepted everything anyway. Is this something we need to call about or will it be fine since his account is already verified? The last thing I want is for our son's aid to be delayed because of this silly technicality.

omg same thing happened with my mom's account! her birthday was off by like 2 days but everything still worked. we just left it since her fafsa contribution part went through ok

That's somewhat reassuring! Did you get your full aid package without any delays? I'm just paranoid they'll flag it during verification.

You definitely need to get this fixed. The DOB field is locked because it's a primary identifier that was used during account creation and verification. When the system cross-references with Social Security, even if it initially passes verification (which can happen), it could cause problems later in the process. You'll need to call Federal Student Aid at 1-800-433-3243 to request a correction to his date of birth. They will likely need to verify his identity through other means and may require documentation to be submitted. Don't wait on this - it could delay your child's aid package if it gets flagged during verification.

This!!! I work at a college financial aid office and we see this issue ALL THE TIME. Definitely get it fixed before verification. It's easier now than explaining later why the docs don't match.

I had to call them about this exact problem last year. The FSA phone lines are absolutely terrible - I spent 3+ hours on hold over multiple days and kept getting disconnected. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent without the wait - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Once I got through, the agent was able to fix the DOB issue in about 5 minutes. They need to unlock that field on their end, and there's no way to do it yourself online.

Thank you so much for the suggestion! I've been dreading calling because I heard the wait times are ridiculous. I'll check out that service if I can't get through.

Is that service legit? Seems sketchy to have a third party help with FAFSA stuff.

@profile8 It's just a callback service, they don't access any of your FAFSA info. They just hold your place in line and call you when they reach an agent. I was skeptical too but it saved me hours.

YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED TO FIX THIS!!! My daughter's aid was delayed by 3 WEEKS last year because my ex-husband's birth year was wrong (1972 instead of 1971). Even though his account was "verified" initially, when they did the final cross-check, the whole application got flagged for verification and we had to submit paper documentation proving his identity. WHAT A NIGHTMARE. Call and fix it now!!!

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did you have to submit his birth certificate or something else?

0 coins

Yep, birth certificate AND his social security card! Then we had to wait for someone to manually review it. Such a waste of time for a typo.

You might want to consider whether this is actually a problem that needs fixing. The system accepted his information and verified his identity successfully, so it seems like the data matches what they have on file. Sometimes the DOB field is locked to prevent identity fraud attempts. What could be happening is that the DOB in their system is the "wrong" one (from your perspective), but it's what they have associated with his records. Changing it might actually create more problems if his old Pell grant info is tied to the current DOB in their system. If your son's FAFSA is processed without issues, you might be better off leaving it alone.

This is unfortunately incorrect advice. FSA will eventually cross-reference with Social Security Administration data during processing or verification, and mismatched DOBs WILL cause problems. Better to fix it proactively than reactively.

btw does ur son qualify for a pell grant too? my sister and i both got them and my counselor said thats cuz my mom had one in the 90s

We're not sure yet, but I hope so! My husband got Pell grants back in 2001-2003, so I'm hoping that helps our son's chances. The SAI calculation is so confusing.

Having a parent who received a Pell grant is one factor in determining Pell eligibility, but it's primarily based on your Student Aid Index (SAI). The lower your SAI, the more likely you are to qualify.

my friend told me u can jus make a whole new FSA ID with the correct birthday and link that one to the FAFSA instead

Please DO NOT do this. Creating multiple FSA IDs can trigger a fraud investigation and significantly delay processing. Only one FSA ID should exist per person, and the proper course of action is to contact Federal Student Aid to correct the existing account.

Update: I finally got through to FSA after a 42-minute wait (not as bad as I expected!). The agent explained that the DOB field is locked because it's a primary identifier, but they were able to submit a change request on their end. They said it will take 3-5 business days to update in the system, and then I'll need to sign back into the account to re-sign the FAFSA with the corrected information. Thanks everyone for your help!

Great news! Smart move getting this fixed now before it becomes a bigger headache later!

Perfect! Just be sure to log back in after 5 business days to check that the correction was made and re-sign the FAFSA. Make note of the confirmation number they provided for the change request, in case you need to reference it later.

Glad to hear you got it resolved! This is such a common issue that I think FSA should make the correction process clearer on their website. For anyone else dealing with this, it's definitely worth calling sooner rather than later. I've seen too many students have their aid delayed because of these kinds of data mismatches during verification. The 3-5 business day turnaround sounds pretty reasonable too!

Totally agree! I'm new to this whole FAFSA process and had no idea that DOB corrections were even a thing that could happen. It seems like such a basic field but apparently it causes major headaches. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here - it's so helpful to see what actually works vs what the official website tells you to do. Definitely saving this thread for future reference!

As a newcomer to the FAFSA process, this thread has been incredibly eye-opening! I had no idea that something as simple as an incorrect date of birth could cause such major delays. It's really helpful to see real experiences from people who've dealt with this exact issue. @StarSeeker, glad you got it sorted out! For anyone else reading this who might be in a similar situation, it sounds like the key takeaway is don't wait - call FSA immediately if you notice any discrepancies in personal information, even if the system seems to accept it initially. Better to spend an hour on hold now than deal with weeks of delays later when you need your aid package!

Absolutely! As someone who just went through this whole FAFSA maze for the first time, I couldn't agree more. It's amazing how these seemingly minor details can snowball into major problems. The proactive approach definitely seems to be the way to go - I'm bookmarking this thread too because there's so much practical advice here that you just don't get from the official resources. @StarSeeker thanks for sharing your update, it gives me confidence that these issues are fixable if you catch them early!

This is such valuable information for anyone navigating the FAFSA process! I'm a newcomer here and this thread really highlights how important it is to double-check all the personal information before submitting. It's reassuring to see that FSA can actually fix these issues relatively quickly once you get through to them. @StarSeeker, thanks for sharing your successful resolution - it gives me hope that these bureaucratic hurdles are manageable with persistence. For other newcomers like me, it seems like the main lesson is: if something looks wrong, don't assume the system knows best just because it accepted the information. Trust your instincts and get it corrected early!

Exactly! As someone completely new to this whole financial aid world, I'm so grateful for threads like this that show the real experiences behind the process. It's honestly a bit overwhelming to think that such a small detail could derail everything, but seeing @StarSeeker get it resolved so efficiently is really encouraging. I'm definitely going to be extra careful reviewing every single field before submitting. The community knowledge here is invaluable - way more helpful than trying to decode the official FAFSA help pages!
