Can I still add colleges to my son's FAFSA after Texas state deadline?

I'm confused about the FAFSA deadline situation for my son. We submitted his FAFSA back in April, but now he's interested in a couple more schools that weren't on his original list. I know the Texas state deadline was end of June, but does that mean we can't add ANY more colleges to his FAFSA application now? Or does the June deadline just apply to the initial submission? We already have an SAI score and everything. I tried calling the Federal Student Aid office but got stuck on hold forever. I'm worried these schools won't consider him for financial aid if we can't officially add them to his FAFSA. Has anyone dealt with this situation before? Thanks!

Yes, you can definitely still add schools to your son's FAFSA! The Texas state deadline refers to the priority deadline for submitting the initial application, not for adding schools. You can add or remove schools at any time throughout the year. Log into studentaid.gov, click on the 2025-2026 FAFSA, and go to the "Make FAFSA Corrections" section to add the schools. The good news is that since you already have an SAI score, the schools will receive his information 3-5 business days after you add them. Just keep in mind that while you can add schools anytime, the financial aid they have available might be limited if you're adding them late in their process.

While you can definitely still add schools, be careful about school-specific deadlines! The June deadline was for the state of Texas aid programs, but individual colleges have their own financial aid deadlines. Some private universities have institutional aid deadlines that might have already passed. I'd recommend checking each school's financial aid website or calling their financial aid office directly to ask if your son will still be considered for all available aid packages if you add him now. Some schools require additional forms like the CSS Profile too, which has different deadlines.

That's a really good point I hadn't considered. One of the schools is private, so I'll definitely check their specific deadlines and requirements. Thank you!

When my daughter was applying, we kept having to add schools to her FAFSA and it was SO frustrating trying to get through to studentaid.gov when we had questions. They would disconnect us after being on hold for like an hour! Finally I found this service called Claimyr that got us through to an actual person at Federal Student Aid in about 15 minutes. It was such a relief to get clear answers about the whole process. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. Saved us so much stress!

Thanks for the recommendation! I was on hold for 45 minutes yesterday before I gave up. I'll check out that service if we run into any issues adding the schools.

I work in a college financial aid office. Everyone here is correct that you can add schools anytime, but I want to emphasize that it's EXTREMELY important to check with each specific school about their financial aid deadlines. Some colleges have already allocated most of their institutional aid for the 2025-2026 year. Your son will still be considered for federal aid (Pell Grants, Direct Loans, etc.) regardless of when you add the school, but school-specific scholarships and grants might be limited. Also, make sure your son has completed any institutional forms these new schools might require. Some schools have their own financial aid applications in addition to the FAFSA.

Thank you for the professional perspective! We'll definitely reach out to the financial aid offices at both schools to ask about their specific deadlines and any additional forms required.

DONT BELIEVE PPL SAYING ITS FINE!!! My nephew added schools in July last year and got ZERO INSTITUTIONAL AID from them because they said he missed their "priority deadline" even though he still qualified!!! The whole system is designed to deny aid to people who don't jump through exactly the right hoops at exactly the right time. It's disgusting how they treat families just trying to afford education. The federal student aid system is a complete mess that punishes people for even minor mistakes.

You're right that missing priority deadlines can impact institutional aid, which is why I advised checking with each school. However, federal aid like Pell Grants and Direct Loans will still be available regardless of when schools are added to the FAFSA. Each school has different policies, so it's important to speak directly with their financial aid offices rather than assuming all aid is lost.

I'm sorry about your nephew's experience. That's exactly what I'm worried about. I'll definitely call each school's financial aid office directly to understand what aid might still be available.

You've gotten good advice here! Just wanted to add that when my son was applying to colleges, he ended up adding two more in August (super late!) and he still got federal aid, but only one of them offered any institutional scholarships. The financial aid counselor told us that they keep a small reserve of scholarship money for late applicants with strong profiles, so if your son has good stats, it doesn't hurt to add the schools and then follow up with a phone call to their financial aid offices to explain the situation. Sometimes they can work with you!

That's really helpful advice - thank you! My son does have strong academics, so maybe there's still hope for some institutional aid. We'll definitely follow up with phone calls after adding the schools.

Just to confirm the technical process for you: 1. Log into studentaid.gov with your student's FSA ID 2. Select the 2025-2026 FAFSA form 3. Click on "Make FAFSA Corrections" 4. Navigate to the "School Selection" section 5. Add the new school codes (every college has a unique federal school code) 6. Submit the corrections 7. You'll get a confirmation page - save or print this for your records The updated information will be sent to the new schools automatically. No need to resubmit the entire application!

Thank you for breaking down the exact steps! That's super helpful. I was worried we'd have to redo the whole application.
