FAFSA status changed from 'processed' to 'in review' after adding more schools - normal?
I'm really confused and slightly worried about my son's FAFSA status. Everything was going smoothly - his application was marked as 'processed' last week and we were feeling relieved. Then on 1/29 he added 3 more colleges to his FAFSA (he found some more programs he wants to apply to), and now the status has changed back to 'in review.' Is this normal? Will this delay his financial aid offers from the original schools? The priority deadlines for some of these schools are coming up fast and I'm worried this change might mess everything up. Do they have to completely reprocess the whole application just because he added more schools?

•Thank you! That's a relief to hear. I was stressing over this all night.

This is absolutely normal behavior for the FAFSA system. When additional schools are added to an already processed application, the system automatically puts the FAFSA back into 'in review' status while it processes the updates and prepares to send the information to the newly added schools. The good news is that: 1. This won't affect the schools that were already listed - they already received the processed information 2. The re-review is typically much faster than the initial processing 3. Your son's SAI (Student Aid Index) calculation won't change just because new schools were added This second review is primarily administrative to ensure the newly added schools receive the proper information package. Barring any other issues, it should return to 'processed' status within a few business days.

•That's such a detailed explanation, thank you! I wish the FAFSA website would explain this somewhere obvious. Do you know if there's anything we need to do or just wait it out?

Just to add to what others have said - you don't need to do anything at this point except wait. The system is working as designed. The in-review status after adding schools is completely normal and won't affect your priority deadlines with the schools that were already on the FAFSA. One thing worth noting: if any of the newly added schools have separate financial aid requirements (like the CSS Profile or institutional forms), make sure your son completes those right away. Some schools won't even look at financial aid packages until they have ALL required forms.

•That's a good point about the CSS Profile! I'll double check if any of these new schools require that. I know one of them is private so they might.

While everyone is saying this is normal (and it is), I've been dealing with FAFSA for 3 kids now and sometimes that "in review" status can get stuck for weeks! The Department of Education's systems are notoriously unreliable this year with all the FAFSA Simplification changes. If it doesn't change back to "processed" within a week, you might want to contact Federal Student Aid directly. BUT good luck getting through to them!!! I spent HOURS on hold trying to resolve an issue with my youngest's application last month. HOURS!!!!

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about. Did you eventually get through to somebody? This whole process is so stressful.

After spending days trying to reach FSA about a similar issue, I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that held my place in line and called me when an agent was available. Saved me literally hours of holding. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ But honestly, for your situation, I'd wait at least 7-10 business days before trying to call anyone. The system really does usually handle these school additions automatically.

•Thanks for that tip! I'll bookmark that service just in case we need it. Going to give it a week like you suggested before panicking.

Hi there! I work in a college financial aid office and can confirm what others have said - this is 100% normal. When schools are added to an existing FAFSA, the system briefly puts it back into review status. The schools that were already listed won't experience any delays in receiving or processing your son's information. Here's what's actually happening: when new schools are added, the Federal Student Aid system must generate what we call an ISIR (Institutional Student Information Record) for each new school. This document contains all your FAFSA information including the calculated SAI. The 'in review' status just means they're preparing those ISIRs for the new schools. Generally the turnaround is 3-7 business days, and it shouldn't affect any priority deadlines as long as the original schools were already listed before those deadlines.

•Then why did my son's FAFSA stay "in review" for THREE WEEKS after adding schools in December??? The system is broken this year and everyone knows it. They should just admit it instead of pretending everything is working as designed.

•You're right that there have been significant delays this year due to the FAFSA Simplification rollout. December was particularly backed up because of system issues and the holidays. Current processing times are much improved, with most school additions being processed within a week. If anyone experiences delays longer than 10 business days now, contacting FSA is definitely recommended.

Update: It went back to "processed" today! That was much faster than I expected after reading some of your comments. All 3 new schools now show up in his account too. Thanks everyone for the help and reassurance!
