How to add a new college to FAFSA after submission - will it affect my son's aid amount?
Hi everyone! First-time FAFSA filer here and I'm panicking a bit. We submitted our FAFSA application back in January with 4 schools listed. Now my son has completely changed his mind and wants to attend a university we didn't include on the original form. How do I add this new school to his FAFSA? More importantly, I'm worried that his financial aid offer will be reduced since his information will reach this school later than other applicants. Are schools really "first come, first served" with aid money? Will being late to the game hurt his chances at this new school? Any advice would be so appreciated!

Adding a school is actually pretty simple! Just log into studentaid.gov with your FSA ID, select "Make FAFSA Corrections," and go to the school selection page. You can add the new school there. As for aid timing - yes and no. Federal aid like Pell Grants won't be affected by when you submit, but some institutional aid and scholarships might have priority deadlines. What's the school he's considering now?

•Thank you so much! He's now interested in University of Michigan (completely different from his original choices). Their priority deadline was in March, so we're definitely past that. Does this mean he'll miss out on significant aid?

My son also switched schools last year after we had already filed FAFSA. The process of adding the school was easy but we DID miss out on some university grants because we missed their priority deadline. Still got federal aid tho

•Oh no, that's what I was afraid of! Did your son end up with a much higher cost than expected because of missing those university grants?

Financial aid counselor here. Adding schools to your FAFSA is simple and won't affect your federal aid eligibility (Pell Grants, Direct Loans, etc). However, many schools do have priority deadlines for their institutional aid. Being past U-Michigan's March deadline means your son might miss some university-specific grants/scholarships, but not necessarily all of them. I'd recommend: 1) Add Michigan to your FAFSA immediately 2) Call Michigan's financial aid office directly to explain the situation 3) Ask if there are any institutional funds still available or if exceptions can be made Some schools hold back some institutional aid specifically for late applicants with strong profiles.

•This is SO helpful, thank you! I'll add Michigan today and call their financial aid office tomorrow morning. Do you think I should have my son email his admissions counselor too or just focus on the financial aid office?

•Have you tried using Claimyr to reach them? I was struggling to get through to my daughter's financial aid office for weeks. Claimyr connected me with an agent in about 15 minutes - they wait on hold for you and call you when someone picks up. Made a huge difference! They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ if you want to see how it works. I wouldn't have gotten my daughter's SAI score issue resolved without it.

Just to add a different perspective - my daughter transferred schools mid-year and we added her new school to FAFSA in November (way past priority deadlines). She still got a decent financial aid package! Some schools have rolling financial aid, so don't lose hope. Definitely call them though!!

•That's encouraging to hear! Was your daughter's new school a state university or private? Michigan is obviously a big state school so I'm wondering if that makes a difference in how they handle late additions.

The FAFSA SCHOOL CODES can be confusing to add properly. Make sure you have the right school code for U-Michigan (I think it's 002325 but DOUBLE CHECK). I accidentally added the wrong campus code for my son and it caused a 3 week delay while they sorted everything out.

•Oh gosh, I hadn't even thought about that! Thank you for the heads up - I'll double check the code before submitting anything.

One more thing - when you add Michigan, your son's SAI (Student Aid Index, formerly EFC) will be sent to them automatically. That's the main number they use for aid calculations. If his SAI is low enough to qualify for significant need-based aid, I'd definitely follow up with a phone call to explain the late addition. Some schools have appeal processes for exactly this kind of situation.

•His SAI is around 9800 - not super low but not extremely high either. I'll definitely call to discuss if there's any possibility of still qualifying for some university grants. This is all so stressful!

This happened to me. My daughter changed her mind in april after fafsa was submitted in january and switched to a more expensive school. We're now paying $13k more per year than we budgeted for because we missed out on some first-come-first-served scholarships. Make sure your son understands the financial impact of switching schools this late!!!

•$13k more?! That's terrifying. Did you try to appeal or was there simply no money left at that point? I don't think my son realizes how much this last-minute change could impact our finances.

To address your follow-up questions: 1. Both the financial aid office AND admissions counselor should be contacted. Sometimes admissions can advocate for students with financial aid. 2. For the person concerned about the $13k gap - definitely file a special circumstances appeal if your financial situation has changed at all since the tax year used for FAFSA. 3. Regarding the SAI of 9800 - that's in a middle range where institutional aid becomes very important. Michigan does have good funding, but being past priority deadline will limit options. Don't forget to check for external scholarships too! Many have deadlines throughout spring and summer.

•Thank you! I just added Michigan to his FAFSA and I've set up phone calls with both financial aid and admissions for tomorrow. I'll also start looking into external scholarships tonight. I appreciate everyone's help so much!

Great to see you taking action so quickly! One additional tip - when you call Michigan tomorrow, ask specifically about their "Professional Judgment" process. This allows financial aid officers to make adjustments to your aid package based on special circumstances, including late FAFSA submissions. Also, don't forget to mention that your son is a serious candidate who's genuinely interested in attending - sometimes schools will work harder to put together a competitive package for students they really want to enroll. Good luck with those calls!

•This is such great advice about the Professional Judgment process - I had no idea that was even an option! I'm definitely going to ask about that tomorrow. It's so helpful to know that schools sometimes make exceptions for students they're interested in recruiting. Fingers crossed that Michigan will work with us despite the late timing. Thank you for giving me hope that this might still work out!

Just wanted to add another perspective as someone who went through this exact situation! My son added a school to his FAFSA in late April last year (even later than you!) and while he did miss some merit scholarships, the school still offered him a reasonable aid package. Michigan is actually pretty good about working with families - they have more funding than many state schools. One thing that really helped us was writing a brief letter to accompany our late FAFSA explaining why we were adding the school late (in our case, son got off a waitlist). It showed we were serious about attending and not just fishing for offers. Also, make sure to submit any additional required forms (CSS Profile, etc.) if Michigan requires them - being complete with all paperwork can make a difference even when you're late. Don't give up hope yet!
