Can I delete my daughter's started FAFSA application and start over?

My daughter started her FAFSA for the 2025-2026 year last weekend but I think she made some major mistakes with our income information. She entered my ex-husband's info when it should've been mine since I have custody. Can we just delete the whole application and start over from scratch? Or do we have to go through and correct each section? I'm worried this will mess up her financial aid chances if we don't fix it properly.

You can't technically delete a FAFSA application once it's been started, but you CAN make corrections! Just log in to studentaid.gov with your daughter's FSA ID, go to the FAFSA form section, and select 'Make FAFSA Corrections.' You can basically change everything except for the Social Security Number.

Thanks for responding! So there's no way to just start fresh? She's only filled out like 3 sections but I'm worried we'll miss something if we try to fix it piece by piece.

Honestly u might be overthinking this. My kid put wrong info 2 years in a row and we just fixed it after. Not a big deal. Just login and hit the correction button.

Not always that simple tho. I put my stepdad's info instead of bio dad's info and ended up getting selected for verification. Took MONTHS to sort out and almost missed my school's priority deadline. Better to be careful upfront.

TECHNICALLY you could create a new FSA ID for your daughter and start a completely new application, but that would be a TERRIBLE IDEA and could trigger fraud alerts!!! Just make the corrections to the existing application. The system tracks submissions by SSN anyway, so a new one would eventually get flagged and could cause MAJOR problems with her aid.

Oh wow, definitely don't want to trigger any fraud alerts! I guess we'll just do the corrections route. Do you know if colleges can see the original incorrect info or just the final corrected version?

I had a similar issue with my son's FAFSA. What worked for us was calling Federal Student Aid directly and asking them to guide us through the correction process. They were really helpful. The wait time to speak with an agent was insane though.

If you need to talk to someone at FSA about this correction issue, I highly recommend using Claimyr. I wasted HOURS trying to get through on my own, but with their service I had a callback in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ and their website is claimyr.com. Totally worth it for important FAFSA issues like income reporting mistakes.

I'm a college financial aid advisor, and I'd like to clarify something important: While you cannot delete a FAFSA application entirely, making corrections is the proper procedure. Regarding the specific issue with reporting the wrong parent's information - this is actually a very common mistake for divorced families. Since you have custody, you are correct that your information should be reported, not your ex-husband's. When making corrections, you'll need to update: - Parent demographic information - Parent income and tax information - Household size - Number in college Be sure to have your tax information ready when making these changes. Also, after submitting corrections, it will take 3-5 business days for processing before schools receive the updated information.

Thank you so much for this detailed response! This is exactly what I needed to know. Will the SAI score change after we submit the corrections?

Yes, your daughter's SAI (Student Aid Index) will likely change after corrections since it's calculated based on the income and household information. Once the corrections are processed, a new SAI will be calculated and sent to the schools she listed on her FAFSA. I recommend making these corrections as soon as possible, and then contacting each school's financial aid office to let them know you've submitted corrections so they can be on the lookout for the updated information.

We'll do that right away! One last question - do we need to sign the corrections with both our FSA IDs again?

Yes, both you and your daughter will need to sign the corrected FAFSA with your respective FSA IDs. The correction isn't officially submitted until both signatures are applied, just like with the original application.

Perfect, thanks so much for all your help! We'll get those corrections submitted tonight.

lol I tried making corrections last year and somehow managed to make things WORSE! ended up having to get my school's financial aid office involved to help fix everything. If u can, maybe sit down w/ a financial aid person at your daughters school to make sure its all done right..

That's actually great advice. Most schools offer FAFSA help sessions this time of year specifically for these kinds of issues.

Just wanted to add that when you're making these corrections, double-check the "Parent 1" and "Parent 2" sections carefully. Since you have custody, you should be listed as Parent 1, and if you're unmarried, you can leave Parent 2 blank. Also, make sure to update the household size to reflect who actually lives in YOUR household, not your ex-husband's. This stuff can really impact the aid calculation, so it's worth taking your time to get it right. Good luck!
