FAFSA application showing my daughter as both student AND parent 1 - can't change SSN

Hi everyone, I'm completely confused with this FAFSA situation. My daughter created her StudentAid.gov account and asked me to help fill out the application. When we got to the parent section, I started entering my information. But now when we review everything, it's showing HER name and info for both the student AND Parent 1 sections! I tried going back to fix it, but it won't let me change the Social Security number. I hit continue anyway, and now it says it's "verifying me" even though it's her info in the parent section. Should I delete the whole application and start over from scratch? Or just wait for verification to fail and see what happens? I'm worried this will mess up her entire financial aid package for 2025-2026.

omg the EXACT same thing happened to me last month! i was helping my son and somehow his ssn got put in for both sections. we panicked and deleted everything and started over. took forever but at least we knew it was right

Thanks for sharing your experience! Did you have any issues after deleting? I'm worried if I delete and start over it might flag something in the system...

This is actually a common issue with the new FAFSA system. When the parent section was populated, it likely pulled the student's information because you were logged into her account. You have a few options: 1. If verification hasn't completed, you can cancel the submission (there's a cancel button under "My FAFSA" section) 2. If it's already processing, wait for it to be rejected, then correct it 3. Call Federal Student Aid directly to explain the situation and request guidance Whichever route you choose, you'll need to ensure the correct SSN is associated with the correct role. The SAI calculation depends entirely on having accurate contributor information.

Thank you for the clear explanation! I checked and there is a cancel button available. If I cancel, will this cause any problems with her being able to submit again right away?

You should be able to start a new application immediately after canceling. Just make sure you're clear about whose information goes where this time. When you get to the parent contribution section, double-check that your SSN (not hers) is entered for Parent 1. The system sometimes auto-fills incorrectly if you're working from her logged-in account.

i dont think verification will work at all with wrong ssns. my nephew had something similar happen and it took WEEKS to fix. better to just start over now then wait for the reject letter which could take 10+ days

This is correct. The verification process cross-references SSNs with IRS records, so if your daughter's SSN is listed as both student and parent, it will definitely fail verification. Starting over now is your best option to avoid delays.

When I was helping my daughter with her FAFSA last October, we ran into a bunch of weird glitches too. The new system is so frustrating! What worked for us was logging out completely, clearing browser cache, and then having HER log back in. Then when we got to the parent section, I entered my info carefully and double-checked everything before moving on. The other thing that helps is using the "Save" button frequently, so if something goes wrong, you don't lose all your progress. But yeah, in your situation, I'd probably just cancel and start fresh.

Good tip about clearing the cache! I'll try that approach when we restart. Did you find any specific browser worked better than others?

We had the best luck with Chrome. Safari gave us some weird errors during the process. Also, avoid using the back button in your browser - always use the navigation buttons within the FAFSA form itself!

I spent TWO HOURS on hold with FAFSA trying to fix this exact problem!!! The system is completely broken this year and they know it. Eventually I just gave up and started over with my son's application. Their "new and improved" system is the worst.

Have you guys tried using Claimyr to get through to Federal Student Aid? I was stuck on hold forever too until someone recommended it. You go to claimyr.com and they basically wait on hold for you and call when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of frustration. They have a demo video that explains it better than I can: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Totally worth it for FAFSA issues - especially with all these glitches in the new system.

OMG thank you for this!!! Will definitely try next time I need to call them!

Financial aid advisor here. This is a known issue with the redesigned FAFSA. The problem occurs because the system sometimes doesn't properly differentiate between the student and parent sections when both are accessing the form from the same computer/account. My recommendation: 1. Cancel the current application (don't worry, this won't affect future submissions) 2. Clear your browser cache and cookies completely 3. Have your daughter log in to her StudentAid.gov account 4. When you reach the contributor section, manually type all information (don't use auto-fill) 5. After entering your SSN as Parent 1, immediately verify it shows YOUR name, not hers If it still pulls her information, try using a different device for the parent section. The system should correctly calculate your SAI once the proper SSNs are associated with each role.

Thank you so much for the detailed instructions! We'll try again following these exact steps. If we do need to use separate devices, does it matter if we're on the same wifi network?

Being on the same WiFi network shouldn't matter - it's more about the browser cache and cookies storing session information. Using separate devices just ensures a completely fresh session. Also, make sure you're using the most updated version of whatever browser you choose.

lol why does FAFSA make everything so complicated? when i filled mine out i just did it all myself and guessed at my parents info... probably why i didn't get much aid tho 😂

Please don't guess on FAFSA information - that's actually considered fraud and can result in serious penalties, including fines up to $20,000, loss of all federal aid eligibility, and even criminal charges in extreme cases. Always use accurate information, and if you don't have access to parent information, there are proper channels to address that through dependency override requests.

Thank you all for the helpful advice! I decided to cancel the application and start fresh. We cleared browser cache, used Chrome instead of Safari, and made sure to double-check every section before continuing. It worked perfectly this time! Her info is correctly showing as student only, and my information is properly listed under Parent 1. The SAI preview number looks much more reasonable now too. What a relief! For anyone else having this problem, definitely just cancel and start over rather than waiting for verification to fail.

Great to hear you got it sorted out! Be sure to regularly check the status in the coming weeks. With the new FAFSA system, some applications are being selected for additional verification even when everything is entered correctly. Just keep an eye on your daughter's StudentAid.gov account for any notifications.

Will do! I've bookmarked the site and set a reminder to check weekly. Really appreciate everyone's help with this!

I'm so glad I found this thread! I'm a college freshman and just went through this nightmare with my mom last fall. We had the exact same issue where my info was showing up in both student and parent sections. After reading all these responses, I want to add that you should also make sure to print or screenshot your final FAFSA summary page once everything is correct. The system sometimes has display glitches even after submission, and having that documentation saved us when our school's financial aid office had questions about our SAI calculation. Also, don't panic if you get selected for verification even with correct info - it's totally random this year and doesn't mean you did anything wrong!

That's such great advice about printing the summary page! I never would have thought of that but it makes total sense given all the glitches people are experiencing. Did you run into any other issues during the verification process, or was it pretty straightforward once you had the correct information submitted?
