Will my ESD claim change from pending to disqualified if I find work before employer responds?
I've been stressing about my unemployment claim for weeks now. Yesterday I finally got through to an ESD rep on the phone (took forever!) and they explained they're waiting for my former employer to respond to their inquiry. My claim is showing 'pending' status right now, but I'm concerned because I have a job interview tomorrow that looks promising. If I do get hired before my claim is processed, what happens? Does my status automatically change to disqualified? I'm really desperate - rent is due next week, I've exhausted my savings, and I don't even know if I'd get my first paycheck in time if I do land this job. Anyone been through something similar? I need some advice fast.

Your claim won't automatically switch to disqualified if you get a job. If your claim is approved, you'd be eligible for benefits covering the period you were unemployed, even if you're working by the time the determination is made. Make sure to report any work and earnings on your weekly claims - that's super important! If you start working full-time, you'll likely no longer be eligible going forward, but you should still be able to receive benefits for the weeks you were fully unemployed.

•That's a relief to hear! So I should keep filing my weekly claims and just report any hours/earnings if I start working? I'm worried about having to pay everything back if they suddenly decide I wasn't eligible all along.

i was in the EXACT same boat last fall!! my landlord was threatening eviction and everything. what i did was call esd like 50 times trying to get them to expedite my claim. when u finally get hired make sure u report the exact date u start working on ur weekly claim or theyll come after u later for overpayment which is a whole other nightmare lol

•Thanks for the warning about reporting the start date correctly. Did you ever get approved for the weeks you were unemployed even after you started working?

I've been through this exact scenario. Here's what you need to know: 1. Keep filing your weekly claims accurately, even if you start working 2. Your claim for the weeks you were unemployed will still be processed regardless of your current employment status 3. If approved, you'll receive backpay for eligible weeks 4. For your financial situation now, contact 211 or your local community action agency - they often have emergency rent assistance programs 5. Some landlords will work with you if you show proof of a job offer and explain the situation The pending status just means they're still investigating your eligibility. Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to ESD faster? I used their service (claimyr.com) when I was in a similar situation and got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending days redialing. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Worth it when you're in a time crunch.

•Thank you so much for the detailed advice! I hadn't heard of Claimyr before - might try that if I need to speak with ESD again. I'll definitely look into the rent assistance programs too, just in case. Really appreciate the help.

The ESD system is such a joke. They take forever to process claims while people are literally facing eviction, then have the nerve to demand immediate repayment if they make a mistake on THEIR end. I had a similar situation last year and ended up having to borrow money from family while waiting for them to get their act together.

Just want to clarify a couple things that might help you: "Pending" means they're still making a determination on your eligibility. It will either change to "paid" if approved or "disqualified" if denied. Finding work doesn't automatically disqualify you from receiving benefits for the period you were unemployed. If you get hired, you'll need to report your hours and earnings on your weekly claims. Depending on how much you earn, your benefits might be reduced for partial weeks worked or stopped completely for full-time work. For your immediate financial needs, have you contacted your local WorkSource office? They sometimes know about emergency financial assistance programs that can help with rent while you're waiting for your claim to process or your first paycheck.

•Thanks for explaining the different status terms - that helps a lot! I haven't contacted WorkSource yet, but I'll definitely do that tomorrow. Any relief for rent would be a huge help right now.

When I had a pending claim it took 6 weeks to get resolved! And my landlord wasn't understanding at all. Have you thought about taking any temporary gig work while you wait? That's what saved me - did food delivery for a couple weeks until my claim finally went through.

•This is good advice about gig work, but remember to report ANY income on your weekly claims, even from temporary gigs. If you don't, you could end up with an overpayment notice later.

I've been thru the whole ESD nightmare twice now. The thing no one tells you is that if you get denied, you should ALWAYS appeal. I got denied initially but won on appeal & got backpay for all those weeks. Don't give up!

•Good to know about appealing! Hopefully it won't come to that, but it's reassuring to hear you eventually got your backpay. How long did the appeal process take?

•My appeal took about 5 weeks from filing to hearing, then another 2 weeks to get the decision and payment. Not quick but worth it for the backpay! Make sure you keep detailed records of everything.
