When does the unemployment increase start in Washington ESD benefits?
I've been hearing rumors about unemployment benefit amounts going up but can't find clear info anywhere on the Washington ESD website. Does anyone know when the unemployment increase starts? My weekly benefit amount has been the same for months and I'm wondering if I should expect it to change automatically or if I need to do something. Really hoping this is true because everything keeps getting more expensive but my UI payments haven't changed at all.

Washington ESD typically adjusts benefit amounts once a year, usually effective in July. The increase is based on average wages from the previous year. You don't need to do anything - it should automatically update if you're eligible.

•Thanks! So it would have already happened this past July? Or is there another increase coming?

•The July 2024 increase already happened. Next one would be July 2025 based on 2024 wage data.

I think there might be confusion here. Are you talking about the regular annual adjustment or some kind of special increase? Because I haven't heard anything about extra increases beyond the normal yearly one.

•I'm not sure honestly, just heard people talking about benefits going up. Maybe they meant the regular July thing?

•Yeah probably just the standard cost of living adjustment that happens every summer.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD to ask about this exact thing but their phone lines are impossible. Spent 3 hours on hold yesterday and got disconnected. So frustrating when you just need a simple answer!

•Have you tried using Claimyr? I found it on claimyr.com and it actually got me through to a Washington ESD agent in like 20 minutes. There's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Totally worth it when you need to actually talk to someone.

The maximum weekly benefit amount for 2024 is $999 per week in Washington. This gets adjusted annually based on the state's average weekly wage. If your benefit calculation puts you at or near the maximum, you'd see increases when that cap goes up.

•My weekly amount is way below that max so I guess the increase wouldn't affect me much anyway?

•Your weekly benefit amount is based on your past wages, so it typically stays the same throughout your claim unless there's a calculation error or the maximum increases and you're affected by it.

ugh the whole system is so confusing! I can never figure out how they calculate these amounts anyway. My friend makes way less than me but gets more unemployment somehow??

•Unemployment benefits are based on your earnings during your base period, not your most recent job. So timing matters a lot in the calculation.

•what's a base period? see this is what I mean, they don't explain anything clearly

Just checked my account and my weekly benefit amount is still the same as when I started my claim in March. Nothing changed after July so I don't think there was any big increase this year.

•Same here, no change in my payments. Maybe the increase only applies to new claims?

•No, if there's an increase to the maximum weekly benefit amount, it applies to existing claims too if you're affected by the higher cap.

I heard they might be doing some kind of emergency increase because of inflation but that might just be wishful thinking. Everything costs so much more now but unemployment stayed the same.

•I don't think Washington has done any emergency increases. Some other states did during COVID but that was different.

•Yeah those pandemic benefits are long gone. We're back to just the regular annual adjustments.

For what it's worth, I called Washington ESD last week using that Claimyr service someone mentioned and asked about this. The agent told me there's no special increase planned beyond the regular July adjustment. She said if people are talking about increases they might be confusing it with other programs or other states.

•That's really helpful, thanks for actually getting a real answer! How much did that service cost?

•It was worth it to actually get through and get accurate info instead of guessing. Way better than spending hours on hold.

Maybe check if you're thinking of the SNAP benefit increases or something like that? I know food stamps went up recently and people sometimes mix up different benefit programs.

•Ooh that could be it! My neighbor was talking about her benefits going up and maybe she meant food stamps not unemployment.

•Yeah SNAP, housing assistance, all kinds of programs adjust at different times. Easy to get confused.

The only increases I know about are the annual ones based on wage data. Washington typically announces these changes on their website in spring before they take effect in July. Haven't seen any announcements about additional increases for 2025 yet.

•So we'd have to wait until next July for any potential increase? That's a long time when rent keeps going up every month.

•Unfortunately yes, unless the legislature passes something special, which doesn't happen often.

I swear they make this stuff as confusing as possible on purpose. Like why can't they just have a simple page that says 'here's when benefits change and by how much'?? Instead you have to dig through 50 different pages to find basic info.

•Totally agree! And then when you call to ask they put you on hold forever. The whole system needs better communication.

•At least with services like Claimyr you can actually get through to ask questions instead of guessing. Still annoying that it's necessary though.

Just want to add that if anyone is expecting their benefits to automatically increase, make sure you're still doing your weekly claims correctly. I know someone who missed out on payments because they thought everything was automatic and stopped reporting properly.

•Good point! I'll make sure to keep filing my weekly claims no matter what happens with any increases.

•Yeah don't stop filing weekly claims! That's the biggest mistake people make.
