When does unemployment go up in Washington - benefit increase timing?

I'm trying to figure out when unemployment benefits actually increase in Washington state. My weekly benefit amount has been the same for months now and I heard there might be annual adjustments but I can't find clear info on Washington ESD's website about when these increases happen. Does anyone know if there's a specific time of year when they bump up the weekly benefit amounts? I'm currently getting $580/week and wondering if that will go up automatically or if I need to do something.

Washington ESD typically adjusts the maximum weekly benefit amount once a year, usually effective in July. The increase is based on average wage data from the previous year. But your individual benefit amount depends on your earnings history from your base period, so it won't necessarily go up just because the maximum increases.

So if I'm already getting $580, that might not change even if the max goes up? That's confusing.

0 coins

Right, your benefit is calculated as a percentage of your past wages. The July adjustment only affects people who were hitting the previous maximum.

0 coins

I think there might be cost of living adjustments too but I'm not 100% sure when those kick in. Last year mine went up like $15 in the summer.

0 coins

That was probably the annual maximum benefit increase, not a cost of living thing specifically.

If you're having trouble getting clear answers from Washington ESD directly, you might want to try calling them. I know the phone lines are crazy busy, but I recently found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you actually get through to an agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Might be worth checking out if you need specific info about your claim.

0 coins

Thanks, I'll look into that. I've tried calling Washington ESD so many times and just get disconnected.

0 coins

Never heard of Claimyr but anything that helps with those phone lines sounds good to me lol

The maximum weekly benefit amount for 2024 was $999 and it went up from $929 the year before. So yeah, July seems to be when they do the annual adjustment. But like others said, most people don't get the maximum anyway.

0 coins

Wow $999 is way more than what I'm getting. Guess my wages weren't high enough to qualify for anywhere near that.

0 coins

You'd need to have been earning around $75,000+ annually to get close to the max. The benefit is roughly half your average weekly wage from your base period.

I've been on unemployment for 8 months now and mine has never gone up. Getting really frustrated with this whole system tbh. Every time I call Washington ESD I either get hung up on or wait 2 hours just to get transferred to someone else.

0 coins

That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - they specialize in getting through Washington ESD's phone system. Really helped me when I was stuck in adjudication hell.

0 coins

Might have to try that. This is ridiculous how hard it is to get basic info.

0 coins

There's also the extended benefits program that can kick in during high unemployment periods, but that's different from regular benefit increases. That adds extra weeks, not higher amounts.

0 coins

Is extended benefits still available? I thought that ended after COVID.

0 coins

Extended benefits can still trigger automatically when unemployment rates hit certain thresholds, but it's separate from the federal pandemic programs.

0 coins

just checked my account and im still getting the same $445 ive been getting since i started claiming in march. guess my wages were too low to benefit from any increases ugh

0 coins

The annual increase only affects the maximum benefit amount. If you're getting $445, that suggests your base period wages were around $22,000-$23,000 annually.

0 coins

yeah that sounds about right, was working part time before i got laid off

0 coins

Does anyone know if there are any other ways to increase your weekly benefit amount once you're already on a claim? Or are you stuck with whatever they calculated initially?

0 coins

You're generally stuck with your initial calculation unless there was an error. The only way to get a higher benefit is to file a new claim with higher wages in your base period.

0 coins

That makes sense but is pretty frustrating if you've been out of work for a while.

0 coins

I work for a temp agency and they told me that unemployment benefits are supposed to be reviewed every quarter, but I don't think that means the amounts change, just that they review eligibility and stuff.

0 coins

That's probably referring to the quarterly wage reports that employers submit. Those are used for new claims but don't affect existing ones.

0 coins

Update: I tried calling Washington ESD again this morning and actually got through to someone! They confirmed that benefit increases happen in July and are based on the previous year's wage data. My current benefit won't change unless I file a new claim with higher wages in my base period. At least I have a definitive answer now.

0 coins

Glad you got through! Sometimes persistence pays off, though Claimyr definitely makes it easier when you're in a hurry.

0 coins

Lucky you! I'm still on hold as I type this lol

0 coins

@profile5 Hang in there! I called right at 8am when they opened and only waited about 45 minutes.

0 coins

For what it's worth, the July increase is usually pretty modest - maybe $20-40 increase in the maximum. It's not like a huge jump or anything.

0 coins

Yeah, it's tied to average wage growth in the state, which has been pretty steady. The $70 jump from 2023 to 2024 was actually on the higher side.

0 coins

This is good info. I was wondering the same thing because I heard some states do cost of living adjustments but I guess Washington just does the annual maximum increase.

0 coins

Correct. Washington ESD adjusts the maximum weekly benefit amount annually, but there's no separate cost of living adjustment for individual benefits.

0 coins

Been claiming for 6 months and never knew about the July thing. Learn something new every day I guess!

0 coins

Same here! It's not exactly well-publicized information.

0 coins

Finally got off hold after 3 hours!! Agent confirmed everything that was said here about July increases. Also mentioned that if you think there was an error in calculating your benefit, you can request a redetermination within a year of filing.

0 coins

Good point about redeterminations. That's mainly for cases where wages weren't properly reported or there were calculation errors though.

0 coins

3 hours on hold is insane. definitely looking into that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier

0 coins

So just to summarize for anyone else wondering: Washington unemployment benefits increase once per year in July, but it only affects the maximum benefit amount. Your individual benefit stays the same unless you file a new claim with higher wages. The increase is based on average wage data from the previous year.

0 coins

Perfect summary! Thanks for putting it all together.

0 coins

Yep, that covers it. The July adjustment is automatic - you don't need to do anything if you're affected by it.

0 coins

i wish they would just send out notices when these increases happen instead of making us hunt for the information

0 coins

right?? like just put it on the main page or something

0 coins

For anyone still struggling to get through to Washington ESD for questions like this, I'll mention Claimyr one more time - it's really been a game changer for reaching agents when you need specific information about your claim. The waiting game with their regular phone system is just brutal.

0 coins

Just watched their demo video and signed up. Fingers crossed it works better than spending half my day on hold!

0 coins

Thanks everyone for the detailed explanations. This thread has been super helpful for understanding how the benefit increases work in Washington.

0 coins

Agreed! Way more helpful than anything I found on the official website.

0 coins

One thing to add - if you're getting partial unemployment (working part-time while claiming), your benefit calculation can change week to week based on your earnings, but that's different from the annual increase we're talking about here.

0 coins

Good distinction. Partial benefits are recalculated each week based on reported earnings, but the underlying weekly benefit amount used in that calculation only changes with the July adjustment.

0 coins

Does anyone know if they announce the new maximum benefit amount before July or do we just find out when it happens?

0 coins

They usually announce it sometime in late spring/early summer, but it doesn't always get a lot of publicity. Sometimes it just shows up in their quarterly newsletter or on their website.

0 coins

This whole thread has been super informative. I was getting worried that I was missing out on some increase I was supposed to apply for or something.

0 coins

Nope, it's all automatic if you're affected by it. No action needed on your part.
