When can I get unemployment benefits through Washington ESD?
I just lost my job last Friday and I'm wondering when I can actually start getting unemployment benefits. Do I need to wait a certain amount of time before I can file? And once I do file, how long before I actually see any money? I've never done this before and I'm really stressed about paying my bills next month. Any help would be appreciated!

You can file your initial claim right away - don't wait! Washington ESD has a one-week waiting period, so you won't get paid for your first week of unemployment. After that, if everything goes smoothly, you should start receiving benefits. File online at esd.wa.gov as soon as possible.

•Thanks! So I can file today even though I just lost my job on Friday?

•Yes, definitely file today. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim gets processed. Just make sure you have all your employment information ready.

Just to add to what was said - you'll need to file weekly claims every week to actually get paid. Don't miss those or you won't get benefits for that week. The first payment usually takes 2-3 weeks if there are no issues with your claim.

•What kind of issues could delay it?

•Things like if they need to verify your employment history, if there's a question about why you lost your job, or if your former employer contests the claim. That's when it goes into adjudication.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status and it's impossible! The phone lines are always busy and I keep getting disconnected. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

•I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an ESD agent. They handle the calling for you and get you connected when an agent is available. Check out claimyr.com - there's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Really? That sounds too good to be true. Does it actually work?

•It worked for me! I was stuck in adjudication for 3 weeks and couldn't get through on my own. They got me connected within a day and I was able to get my issue resolved.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too. You'll need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of them. Washington ESD can audit this at any time.

•Do I need to start the job search right away or can I wait until I start getting benefits?

•Start immediately. The job search requirement begins the week you file your claim, not when you start receiving benefits.

•I know it seems overwhelming at first, but once you get through the initial filing process it becomes more routine. The weekly claims are pretty straightforward.

One more thing - if your claim goes into adjudication (meaning they need to investigate something), it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer. That's when people really struggle to get answers from Washington ESD about what's happening.

•This happened to me! I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and finally got through to find out what documents they needed from me. Saved me weeks of waiting.

•How do I know if my claim is in adjudication?

Caden Turner
•It will show on your eServices account. You'll see a status that says something like 'adjudication in progress' or similar.

I waited 2 months to file because I thought I had to wait for some reason. Don't make my mistake - file immediately!

•Oh no! Did that affect your benefits?

•Yes, you can only backdate your claim one week, so I lost about 7 weeks of potential benefits. It was a expensive mistake.

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator where you can estimate how much you might get. It's based on your earnings in your base period, which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters.

Eve Freeman
•That sounds complicated. How do I figure out what my base period is?

Kirsuktow DarkBlade
•When you file your claim, they'll tell you what your base period is and calculate your weekly benefit amount for you. Don't stress about doing the math yourself.

Just remember you have to be able and available for work each week when you file your weekly claim. If you're sick or can't work for any reason, you need to report that.

•What happens if I get sick after I start receiving benefits?

•You'd mark that you weren't able and available for work that week. You probably won't get paid for that week, but it won't hurt your overall claim.

I'm going through the same thing right now. Filed my claim on Monday and I'm anxiously waiting to see what happens. The waiting is the worst part!

•Good luck! Hopefully we both get through this process quickly.

•Thanks! I'll let you know how it goes if you want to update us on your situation too.

One last tip - set up direct deposit when you file your claim. Paper checks take much longer to arrive and can get lost in the mail. Direct deposit is available 1-2 business days after your payment is processed.

•Great advice! Is there anything else I should know before I file today?

•Have your Social Security number, driver's license, and information about your last employer ready. Also any other employers you worked for in the past 18 months. That should cover the basics.

The system crashed on me three times when I was trying to file online. SO FRUSTRATING! Eventually got through but it took hours.

•Try filing early in the morning or late at night when there's less traffic on the website. Peak hours can be really slow.

Don't forget about WorkSourceWA registration either. You'll need to register there for job search services as part of your unemployment requirements.

•Is that something I do right away or later?

•You should register within a few days of filing your unemployment claim. It's a separate website from the ESD site.

If anyone else is having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I'll second the recommendation for Claimyr. They got me through to an agent when I couldn't get past the busy signal after calling 50+ times.

•How much does something like that cost?

Lena Kowalski
•I'd rather not get into specifics about cost, but for me it was worth it to avoid the stress of calling all day every day. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person at ESD.

Been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years and the process hasn't really changed much. File early, file your weekly claims on time, and keep good records of your job search. That's really all there is to it.

My cousin filed for unemployment and got her first payment in exactly 3 weeks. No issues with her claim though - I think that makes a big difference.

Good luck everyone! The unemployment system isn't perfect but it's there to help us get through tough times. Don't be afraid to use it if you need it.
