When can I collect unemployment benefits through Washington ESD?
I'm really confused about when exactly I can start collecting unemployment benefits in Washington. I got laid off from my retail job last Tuesday and I'm not sure if I should file right away or wait. My manager said something about a waiting period but I don't know what that means. Do I need to wait a certain amount of time before I can even apply? And once I do apply, how long until I actually get paid? I'm stressed about rent coming up and need to know what to expect.

You should file your claim immediately after becoming unemployed. There's no waiting period to FILE your claim, but there is a one-week waiting period before you can receive benefits. This means your first week of unemployment won't be paid, but you still need to file your weekly claim for that week to establish your claim.

•So I should have filed already? It's been 5 days since I was laid off. Did I mess up by waiting?

•No, you're fine! Just file today. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim gets processed. You'll backdate it to when you became unemployed.

The waiting week is unpaid but you still have to do your job search and file your weekly claim. After that first week, if you're approved, you'll start getting paid for subsequent weeks. Processing time varies but usually takes 2-3 weeks to get your first payment.

•2-3 weeks?! That seems like forever when you have bills to pay.

•Yeah it's rough. I had to borrow money from family while waiting for my first check.

Just went through this process myself. If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach a human agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made the whole process way less stressful.

•Is that legit? I'm desperate to talk to someone at Washington ESD but the phone lines are always busy.

•Yeah it's real. I was skeptical at first too but it actually connected me to an ESD agent when I couldn't get through on my own.

IMPORTANT: You need to meet the eligibility requirements to collect benefits. You must have worked enough hours and earned enough wages in your base period, be able and available for work, and actively seeking employment. Being laid off usually qualifies you, but being fired for misconduct might not.

•I was definitely laid off due to budget cuts, not fired. How do I know if I worked enough hours?

•When you file your claim, Washington ESD will determine if you have sufficient work history. Generally you need to have worked in at least two quarters of your base period.

don't forget you have to register with WorkSource too, that's part of the requirements now

•What's WorkSource? Is that something separate from the unemployment claim?

Xan Dae
•WorkSource is Washington's job search system. You'll need to register there and use it for your required job search activities.

The whole system is so confusing! I filed three weeks ago and my claim is still pending. Can't get anyone on the phone at Washington ESD no matter when I call.

•That's exactly why I used Claimyr - saved me hours of trying to call. They got me connected to an agent who explained why my claim was delayed.

•Maybe I should try that. This is ridiculous how hard it is to reach them.

File online at esd.wa.gov, it's faster than calling. Make sure you have all your employer information ready - names, addresses, dates of employment, reason for separation.

•Do I need pay stubs or anything like that to file?

Thais Soares
•Not to file initially, but have them ready in case Washington ESD requests documentation later.

Been on unemployment twice in the past five years. First time took forever to get approved, second time was much faster. I think it depends on how busy they are and if there are any issues with your claim.

•What kind of issues might come up?

•Could be anything - wage verification, reason for separation, identity verification. That's when you really need to talk to someone at ESD.

Remember you have to file your weekly claim every week even if your initial claim is still pending. Don't skip weeks or you might lose benefits for those weeks.

•How do I file weekly claims if my initial claim isn't approved yet?

Kendrick Webb
•You can still file them through your eServices account. If you're approved, you'll get paid for all the weeks you filed.

The job search requirement is 3 job contacts per week. Keep detailed records because they can audit you at any time.

•Do I have to start job searching immediately or can I wait until my claim is approved?

Hattie Carson
•Start immediately. The job search requirement begins with your first week of unemployment, even the unpaid waiting week.

This whole thread is making me anxious. I filed two weeks ago and haven't heard anything. Should I be worried?

•Two weeks isn't unusual. Check your eServices account for any alerts or required actions.

•I check every day but it just says 'claim under review' with no other info.

Pro tip: file your claim on Sunday night or Monday morning. The system is less busy then and you're more likely to get through without errors.

•Good to know! I'll file tonight then.

•Yeah, avoid Friday afternoons and Monday mornings when everyone's trying to file at once.

Make sure you understand the difference between being 'able and available' versus being on standby. If you're on temporary layoff expecting to return to work, that's different from being permanently laid off.

Isaiah Sanders
•I was permanently laid off, not temporarily. Does that make a difference in when I can collect?
0 coins
TillyCombatwarrior
•Not really for timing, but it affects your job search requirements. Permanent layoffs have to actively search for work.

Don't forget to report any income you earn while on unemployment, even part-time work. They'll reduce your benefits but you can still collect partial unemployment.

•What if I pick up a few gig work jobs while waiting for my claim to process?

•Report all income when you file your weekly claims. Washington ESD has formulas for how much you can earn and still get benefits.

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for a month and they keep hanging up on me. It's like they don't want to pay out claims.

•I totally get the frustration. That's why services like Claimyr exist - they bypass the busy phone lines and actually get you connected to agents who can help.

•At this point I'm willing to try anything. This is insane.

I remember when I first filed for unemployment, I was so confused about all the requirements. The key is to file immediately and then be patient with the process. It does eventually work out.

•Thanks for the reassurance. I'm going to file tonight and try to stay patient.

Quick question - do I need to be a Washington resident to collect unemployment here, or just need to have worked here?
0 coins
Xan Dae
•You need to have worked in Washington state. Where you live now can affect some things but shouldn't prevent you from filing.

•Thanks! I moved to Oregon but worked in Washington until I was laid off.

For everyone having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone - I used Claimyr last month when I couldn't reach anyone about my adjudication issue. Worth checking out their demo video to see how it works.

•Yeah, it actually works. Saved me probably 10+ hours of calling and getting busy signals.

Bottom line: file as soon as possible, be prepared to wait, keep filing weekly claims, and do your job search. The system isn't perfect but it does work eventually.
