What is unemployment today in Washington state - confused about current benefits
I'm really confused about what unemployment looks like today. My friend just got laid off from her retail job and I'm trying to help her understand what she can apply for through Washington ESD. Is it still the same as it was a few years ago? I know there were all those extra programs during COVID but I think those ended. What's actually available now in 2025 for someone who just lost their job? She worked part-time for about 18 months if that matters.

Regular unemployment insurance (UI) is still the main program available through Washington ESD. The pandemic programs like PUA and PEUC ended in 2021. Your friend should apply online at esd.wa.gov if she meets the basic requirements - lost job through no fault of her own, able and available to work, actively seeking work.

•Thanks! Does part-time work count? She was only working about 25 hours a week.

•Yes, part-time work counts as long as she earned enough wages during her base period to qualify. Washington ESD will calculate this automatically when she applies.

the requirements are pretty straightforward now. she needs to have worked and earned wages in at least two quarters of her base period, be able to work, available for work, and actively looking. no more of those complicated pandemic programs to worry about

•What's a base period? I keep seeing that term but don't understand it.

•its the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file your claim. so if she files now in early 2025 it would be roughly april 2023 through march 2024

Current Washington ESD unemployment is much simpler than during the pandemic. Regular UI benefits are available for up to 26 weeks, and the weekly benefit amount is calculated based on her earnings during the base period. She'll need to file weekly claims and meet job search requirements - currently 3 job search activities per week.

•3 job searches per week sounds manageable. Does she have to prove these somehow?

Anastasia Popova
•Yes, she needs to keep a job search log with details about each activity. Washington ESD can audit this anytime, so it's important to keep accurate records.

If she's having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone to ask questions about her application, there's actually a service called Claimyr that helps people reach unemployment agents. I found it at claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - they basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

ugh the washington esd system is still a nightmare even without the pandemic chaos. your friend better be prepared for long waits, confusing websites, and maybe having her claim stuck in adjudication for weeks

•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.

CosmicCadet
•Adjudication is when Washington ESD needs to review something about your claim before approving benefits. Could be employment separation details, eligibility questions, or wage verification. Usually resolves within 2-4 weeks.

•2-4 weeks if youre lucky. mine took 6 weeks and i had to call constantly to get anyone to look at it

I'm going through this right now actually. Filed 3 weeks ago and still waiting for my first payment. The whole process feels overwhelming and I'm constantly worried I'm doing something wrong with my weekly claims.

•That's normal for a first-time claim. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every week even while waiting for approval, and keep doing your job search activities.

•Thanks, I've been doing the weekly claims but wasn't sure about the job search stuff since I haven't been approved yet.

todays unemployment is actually pretty generous compared to some other states. washington has one of the higher maximum weekly benefit amounts and the job search requirements arent too crazy

Omar Farouk
•What's the maximum someone can get per week?

Chloe Harris
•i think its around $999 per week maximum now in 2025, but most people get less depending on their previous wages

One thing that's different now is the WorkSourceWA requirement. She'll need to register with WorkSource within a certain timeframe and may need to participate in reemployment services depending on her situation.

Omar Farouk
•Is that separate from the regular job search requirement?

CosmicCadet
•Yes, WorkSource registration is separate. It's part of the overall requirement to show you're actively seeking work, but it's a specific system you register with.

just went through this last year. the key things are: apply online asap, file weekly claims religiously, keep detailed job search records, and be patient. washington esd moves slow but they eventually get there

•How long did it take you to get your first payment?

•about 3 weeks for me, but i had a straightforward layoff situation. if theres any complications it could take longer

Another thing about Claimyr - if your friend's claim gets stuck in adjudication or she has questions about her eligibility, it's really helpful for actually reaching someone at Washington ESD who can explain what's happening. The regular phone lines are impossible to get through.

•I might need to try that. I've called probably 50 times and either get busy signal or hang up after an hour on hold.

Sean Flanagan
•Yeah that's exactly why I started using it. They handle all the calling frustration and you just get connected when there's actually an agent available.

One more thing - if she gets denied for any reason, she can appeal the decision. Don't just give up if the initial determination isn't what she expected.

Omar Farouk
•Good to know! Hopefully it won't come to that but I'll tell her about the appeal option.

honestly unemployment today is way less confusing than during 2020-2021. just the one program to worry about, clear requirements, and the online system works pretty well most of the time

Final summary for your friend: Regular UI through Washington ESD, apply online at esd.wa.gov, file weekly claims, do 3 job search activities per week, register with WorkSource, and be patient with the process. The system works but it takes time.

•Good luck to your friend! The process can be frustrating but once it's set up it runs pretty smoothly.

unemployment is unemployment, its still a pain to deal with bureaucracy but at least the benefits are there when you need them. tell your friend to stay on top of the weekly claims and job search requirements

Last mention of Claimyr since it came up a few times - if anyone else is struggling to reach Washington ESD, the service really does work. Especially useful when you have time-sensitive questions about your claim status or need to resolve adjudication issues quickly.
