What is the unemployment rate right now in Washington - how does this affect my claim?
I've been hearing different numbers about what the unemployment rate is right now and I'm wondering how this affects my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. Does anyone know the current rate? I'm worried that if unemployment is going down, they might be stricter about approving claims or requiring more job search activities. My claim has been in adjudication for 2 weeks and I'm starting to panic about whether the current job market situation will work against me.

Last I checked Washington's unemployment rate was around 4.1% which is actually pretty good compared to during the pandemic. But honestly, the unemployment rate doesn't really affect your individual claim approval - Washington ESD looks at your specific work history and reason for separation, not the overall economy.

•That's actually reassuring. I was laid off due to company downsizing so I think my case should be pretty straightforward.

•Yeah the rate being lower just means there are more jobs available, but if you got laid off through no fault of your own, that doesn't change your eligibility.

The current unemployment rate in Washington is sitting at about 4.2% as of the latest data. This is considered relatively low historically. However, what matters more for your claim is meeting the basic eligibility requirements - you need to have earned enough wages in your base period, be able and available for work, and have lost your job through no fault of your own.

•Do you know if they've increased the job search requirements because the rate is lower?

•The job search requirement is still 3 job search activities per week in Washington. That hasn't changed based on the unemployment rate.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks to check on my claim status and can never get through! The phone system is so frustrating. Does anyone have tips for actually reaching a human there?

•I had the same problem until I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They basically call Washington ESD for you and get you connected to an actual agent. I was skeptical at first but it worked - I got through in like 20 minutes instead of spending hours redialing.

•Really? How does that work exactly? Do they charge a lot?

•You just give them your info and they handle the calling part. They have a video demo that explains it all: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Way easier than sitting there hitting redial for hours.

Unemployment rates don't really matter for individual claims but they DO affect how backed up Washington ESD gets with applications. When rates are higher, more people file claims and everything gets slower.

•That makes sense. So even though the rate is lower now, are they still dealing with backlogs from when it was higher?

•Some offices might be, but it's gotten much better than it was in 2020-2021.

I think people get too caught up in the overall numbers. What matters is YOUR situation - did you work enough hours, did you get fired or laid off, can you work if a job comes up. The state unemployment rate is just statistics.

•Exactly! I got approved even when unemployment was really low because I had a legitimate claim.

•Good point. I guess I'm just anxious because this is my first time filing for unemployment.

4.2% is actually really good! I remember when it was over 10% a few years back. But like others said, won't affect your personal claim.

•Yeah those were rough times. So many people filing claims that the whole system was overwhelmed.

One thing to remember is that even with lower unemployment, there are still legitimate reasons people lose jobs - layoffs, company closures, medical issues, etc. Washington ESD has to process these claims regardless of the overall rate.

•That's true. My whole department got eliminated so it's not like I could have prevented it.

•Same here - company went out of business completely. Has nothing to do with the job market.

Has anyone else noticed it's still really hard to get through to Washington ESD on the phone even though fewer people are filing claims now?

•YES! I spent 3 hours yesterday trying to reach someone about my adjudication issue and never got through.

•This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. Their system just keeps calling until it gets you connected to an actual Washington ESD agent. Saved me so much frustration.

•Is that legit though? Seems too good to be true.

•I was skeptical too but it worked. They don't ask for your SSN or anything sensitive, just basic contact info to set up the call connection.

The unemployment rate being around 4% is actually considered 'full employment' by economists. But people still lose jobs for reasons beyond their control.

Cameron Black
•I didn't know that about the 4% being considered full employment. Interesting.

Don't worry about the overall rate affecting your claim approval. I got approved last month and the adjudicator never mentioned anything about job market conditions - just asked about my work history and why I was laid off.

•How long did your adjudication take? Mine has been 2 weeks so far.

•About 3 weeks total. They had to verify my employment with my former employer.

washington unemployment rate is definitely better than most states right now but that doesn't help when you're the one who lost your job!

•Exactly! The statistics don't pay my rent.

For context, Washington's 4.2% unemployment rate is below the national average and indicates a relatively healthy job market. This might actually work in your favor for job search requirements - there should be more opportunities available when you're ready to return to work.

•That's a good way to look at it. I hadn't thought about it helping with the job search part.

•Yeah when unemployment is low, it usually means employers are hiring more actively.

I've been tracking this stuff and Washington's rate has been pretty stable around 4-4.5% for the past year. Much better than the 8-12% we saw during the worst of COVID.

Question - does the unemployment rate affect how much you get paid in benefits? Or is that just based on your previous wages?
0 coins
Ruby Garcia
•Benefit amounts are calculated based on your wages during your base period, not the current unemployment rate. Washington ESD uses a specific formula based on your earnings.

•Thanks, that's what I thought but wasn't sure.

The real question is whether they're going to start making the eligibility requirements stricter when unemployment is this low. Anyone heard anything about that?
0 coins
Jessica Nguyen
•I haven't seen any indication of that. The eligibility requirements are set by state law, not adjusted based on economic conditions.

•Good to know. I was worried about the same thing.

Just want to say thanks for asking this question - I was wondering the same thing about how the current rate might affect my claim!

Update: I finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Took about 25 minutes and the agent was able to tell me exactly what was holding up my claim. Definitely worth it if you're having trouble getting through on your own.

•That's great to hear! What was holding up your claim if you don't mind me asking?

•They needed additional verification from my employer about my separation date. Something I could have provided weeks ago if I'd known.

•This is exactly why I'm going to try Claimyr too. Been waiting 3 weeks with no communication.

Bottom line - 4.2% unemployment is good news for the economy but doesn't change how Washington ESD processes individual claims. Focus on your specific situation and don't stress about the big picture numbers.
