What is REA unemployment requirement in Washington ESD system?
I keep seeing references to 'REA' in my Washington ESD account but I have no idea what this means. My claim has been approved for regular UI benefits but there's a section that mentions REA eligibility or something like that. Is this something I need to worry about? Do I have to do anything special for REA? I'm already doing my job searches and filing my weekly claims on time. Just want to make sure I'm not missing some requirement that could mess up my benefits.

REA stands for Reemployment and Eligibility Assessment. It's a federally funded program that Washington ESD uses to help certain claimants get back to work faster. Not everyone gets selected for it, but if you do, you'll get a notice requiring you to attend an appointment.

•Oh okay, so it's not automatic? How do they decide who gets selected for REA?

•They use a statistical model to identify claimants who are most likely to exhaust their benefits. Things like your work history, education level, and local job market conditions factor in.

i got selected for REA last year and honestly it was pretty helpful. they review your resume, help with job search strategies, and connect you with WorkSource services. if you get selected you HAVE to attend or they'll stop your benefits though

•That's good to know it's actually helpful! How much notice do they give you for the appointment?

•I think it was like 10 days notice? enough time to arrange your schedule

If you haven't received an REA appointment notice yet, you might not be selected at all. The program targets people who they think will have trouble finding work quickly. It's actually a good thing if you're selected because you get extra job placement help.

•What happens if you can't make it to the REA appointment? Do they reschedule or just cut you off?

•They'll usually reschedule once if you have good cause, but you need to call them before the appointment time. Missing it without notice will definitely result in a disqualification.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks to ask about my REA status and other questions about my claim. The phone lines are always busy and I keep getting disconnected. This is so frustrating when you need answers about important stuff like this.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. I used it when I was having issues reaching someone about my adjudication. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it just another thing that takes your money?

•It worked for me. Basically they handle the calling and waiting so you don't have to sit on hold for hours. Worth checking out the demo to see if it's right for your situation.

REA is one of those programs that sounds scary but is actually designed to help you. The assessment part checks if you're still eligible for benefits and the reemployment part gives you resources to find work faster. Win-win if you ask me.

•That makes me feel better about it. I was worried it was some kind of test I could fail.

Does anyone know if REA appointments are still being done in person or are they virtual now? I live pretty far from the nearest WorkSource office.

•Many REA appointments are still done virtually, especially if you're in a rural area. They'll specify in your appointment notice whether it's in-person or virtual.

•Good to know, thanks! That would make it much easier for me.

I got selected for REA and skipped it because I thought it was optional. Big mistake - they suspended my benefits immediately. Had to go through an appeal process to get them reinstated. Don't make the same mistake I did!

•Yikes! How long did the appeal take?

•About 3 weeks, but I was without benefits that whole time. Really wish I had just gone to the appointment.

•This is exactly why I stress to people that REA is mandatory if you're selected. It's not a suggestion - it's a requirement for continuing benefits.

wait so REA is different from the regular job search requirements? i thought all the job search stuff was the same thing

•REA is separate from your regular job search activities. You still have to do your 3 job searches per week AND attend REA if selected. REA is more like career counseling.

•ok that makes sense, so its like extra help on top of the normal stuff

The REA program has pretty good success rates from what I've read. People who complete it tend to find jobs faster than those who don't get selected. So if you do get picked, try to see it as an opportunity rather than a burden.

•That's a good way to look at it. I'll keep an eye out for any notices about REA appointments.

I'm a career counselor and work with REA participants sometimes. The program really does focus on practical job search skills - resume writing, interview prep, using WorkSourceWA effectively. It's not just bureaucratic paperwork.

•Do they help with specific industries or is it more general job search advice?

•They can tailor the assistance to your background and the local job market. If you're in a specialized field, they'll connect you with industry-specific resources.

Just wanted to add that REA selection can happen at any point during your claim, not just at the beginning. I got selected in week 8 of my claim. So don't think you're in the clear just because you haven't heard anything yet.

•Good point! I'll make sure to keep checking my ESD account regularly for any notices.

The worst part about all these ESD programs is trying to get someone on the phone when you have questions. I spent literally 6 hours trying to reach someone about my REA appointment last month.

•I had the same problem until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that calls ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual person. Saved me so much time and frustration. The website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

•Interesting, I might have to try that. The phone situation with ESD is just ridiculous.

Does REA count toward your work search activities for the week? Like if I have an REA appointment, do I still need to do 3 job searches that week?

Victoria Scott
•REA activities can count as work search activities, but you should check with your counselor during the appointment to make sure you're documenting it correctly in your weekly claim.

•Thanks, I'll make sure to ask about that if I get selected.

For anyone wondering, you can find more info about REA on the WorkSourceWA website. They have a whole section explaining the program and what to expect.

•Perfect, I'll check that out. Thanks for all the helpful info everyone!

One more thing - if you're selected for REA and you find a job before your appointment, you still need to let them know. Don't just skip the appointment because you got hired.

•Good advice! Better to communicate than risk any issues with your final benefit payments.
