Washington ESD unemployment rates highest in which counties right now?

I'm trying to figure out which areas of Washington state currently have the highest unemployment rates. My cousin is looking to relocate for better job opportunities and wants to avoid the hardest hit regions. Does anyone know where Washington ESD reports the unemployment numbers are worst right now? I've been searching their website but can't find recent county-by-county breakdowns.

From what I've seen, some of the rural counties tend to have higher rates, especially those dependent on seasonal industries like agriculture. King County usually has lower rates due to tech jobs, but even Seattle has been seeing increases lately.

0 coins

That makes sense about the seasonal work. Are there any specific counties you'd recommend avoiding?

0 coins

Pacific County and Ferry County typically struggle more than urban areas

0 coins

You can find this data on the Washington State Employment Security Department's Labor Market Information page. They publish monthly unemployment statistics by county. Last I checked, some of the smaller counties like Adams and Garfield had rates above 6%, while King and Snohomish were closer to 4%.

0 coins

Thanks! I'll check that Labor Market Information section. Didn't know they broke it down that specifically.

0 coins

The seasonal adjustments make a big difference too - some counties look worse in winter months

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months trying to get through to someone about my claim status. If your cousin ends up needing to file for unemployment benefits, I'd suggest using Claimyr.com - they have a service that helps you actually reach ESD agents by phone. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

0 coins

Hopefully my cousin won't need unemployment benefits, but good to know there are ways to actually get through to ESD if needed.

0 coins

I've heard about services like that. Do they actually work for getting past the busy signals?

0 coins

Yeah it worked for me after weeks of trying on my own. They handle the calling part so you don't have to keep redialing.

0 coins

Eastern Washington generally has higher unemployment than the west side, but it varies a lot by industry. Spokane County isn't too bad, but some of the smaller counties struggle. Your cousin should also look at job growth trends, not just current unemployment rates.

0 coins

Good point about job growth trends. Where would I find that kind of forward-looking data?

0 coins

Washington ESD's workforce development reports usually include employment projections by region

0 coins

Don't forget that unemployment rates can be misleading - some areas have low rates because people gave up looking for work. Labor force participation rates are important too.

0 coins

I hadn't thought about that aspect. This is getting more complicated than I expected.

0 coins

True, and some counties have people commuting to other areas for work, which affects the local statistics

0 coins

i think yakima county has been pretty rough lately, lots of agricultural workers struggling when seasons end

0 coins

Makes sense with the seasonal nature of farm work there.

0 coins

Yeah but Yakima also has some good healthcare jobs and the cost of living is lower

0 coins

The Washington State Department of Commerce also publishes economic data by county that might help your cousin. They show which industries are growing or shrinking in each area.

0 coins

I'll check that out too. Starting to get a better picture of what to research.

0 coins

Commerce department data is good for the big picture, ESD data is better for current unemployment specifics

0 coins

What kind of work is your cousin looking for? That makes a huge difference in which areas to consider.

0 coins

He's in manufacturing, specifically aerospace-related work.

0 coins

For aerospace, definitely look at Snohomish County where Boeing has operations, or Pierce County

0 coins

Aerospace took a hit during the pandemic but it's recovering. Those counties still have good opportunities.

0 coins

I was unemployed for 8 months last year and had to deal with ESD constantly. The system is so overwhelmed that even in low unemployment areas, it takes forever to get help if you need it. Definitely recommend having backup plans.

0 coins

8 months sounds rough. Did you eventually find something in the same field?

0 coins

Eventually yes, but I had to expand my search area significantly

0 coins

Check out WorkSource Washington too - they have local employment data and can show which areas have the most job openings in specific fields.

0 coins

Is WorkSource connected to ESD or a separate thing?

0 coins

WorkSource is part of ESD's job search and training programs. Good resource for seeing what's available.

0 coins

The timing matters too - some counties look better in summer due to tourism and construction, worse in winter. Make sure you're looking at seasonally adjusted numbers.

0 coins

Good point. I should probably look at annual averages rather than just one month's data.

0 coins

yeah especially for places like chelan county that depend on summer tourism

0 coins

I moved from Grays Harbor County to Thurston County last year specifically because the job market was so much better. Sometimes relocating within the state makes a huge difference.

0 coins

How big a difference did you see in available opportunities?

0 coins

Night and day difference. Went from applying to maybe 2-3 jobs a week to having multiple interviews

0 coins

Just remember that if your cousin does end up needing to file for unemployment while job searching, the Washington ESD phone system is incredibly frustrating. I spent weeks trying to get through before someone told me about Claimyr. Made the whole process so much easier.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost? Seems like it might be worth it if ESD is that hard to reach.

0 coins

It's definitely worth it compared to the stress and wasted time of trying to call ESD yourself. The peace of mind alone was valuable.

0 coins

Don't overlook Spokane - it's had some economic diversification lately and the unemployment isn't as bad as some of the smaller eastern counties.

0 coins

I'll add Spokane to the list of areas to research more thoroughly.

0 coins

Spokane has been investing in tech and healthcare sectors, not just traditional industries

0 coins

Whatever you do, make sure your cousin has all his documentation ready if he needs to interact with ESD. They're very picky about paperwork and it can delay everything.

0 coins

What kind of documentation should he prepare ahead of time?

0 coins

Employment history, tax forms, any severance or separation paperwork. ESD wants everything documented.

0 coins

i've been watching the job market pretty closely and it seems like things are slowly improving statewide, but the recovery is definitely uneven across different counties

0 coins

That matches what I'm seeing in the limited research I've done so far.

0 coins

Urban areas recovered faster but some rural counties are still struggling with pre-pandemic issues

0 coins

For aerospace specifically, you really want to look at Snohomish, King, and Pierce counties. Those have the established supply chains and supporting industries.

0 coins

That's consistent with what others have said about aerospace opportunities.

0 coins

Plus those counties have better transit options if he needs to commute between different facilities

0 coins

The Washington Employment Security Department updates their county unemployment data monthly, usually around the 3rd Friday. You can set up email alerts to get the latest numbers.

0 coins

Email alerts sound perfect - I'll sign up for those to track the trends.

0 coins

The Bureau of Labor Statistics also has Washington-specific data that's worth checking

0 coins

Just wanted to add that if your cousin is considering relocation, he should also factor in housing costs and cost of living differences between counties. Lower unemployment doesn't always mean better financial situation.

0 coins

Absolutely right. King County might have more jobs but the housing costs are brutal.

0 coins

That's why I ended up in Thurston County instead of King - good balance of jobs and affordability

0 coins

One more resource - the Puget Sound Regional Council publishes economic forecasts that include employment projections for the central Puget Sound area. Helpful for long-term planning.

0 coins

Thanks for all these resources everyone. I have a lot more research to do but this gives me a great starting point.

0 coins

Happy to help. Economic data can be overwhelming but it's worth taking the time to understand the trends.

0 coins

Good luck to your cousin! The job market is tough but Washington still has opportunities if you know where to look. Having family support during a job search makes a big difference too.

0 coins

Thanks! I'll pass along all this great information to him. Really appreciate everyone taking the time to help.

0 coins

And remember, if he does need to deal with ESD for any reason, services like Claimyr can save a lot of headaches with the phone system.

0 coins

I'll definitely keep that in mind. Hopefully it won't be necessary but good to know the option exists.
