Washington ESD unemployment payment amount - how much pay for unemployment benefits?
I'm trying to figure out how much I'll get from Washington ESD for unemployment. I was making $18 an hour at my warehouse job for about 8 months before getting laid off. My friend said unemployment pays like 60% of what you made but I'm not sure if that's right. Does anyone know how Washington ESD calculates the weekly benefit amount? I need to know so I can budget for rent and bills.

Washington ESD uses your highest earning quarter from the past year to calculate benefits. It's not exactly 60% - they look at your base period wages and divide by 52. Maximum weekly benefit for 2025 is $999 per week but most people get way less than that.

•So they don't just take my last paycheck and calculate from that? This is confusing.

•No, they look at all four quarters in your base period. The highest quarter determines your weekly benefit amount.

I think it's around 50% of your average weekly wage but there's a minimum and maximum. When I filed last year I was making $22/hour and got about $520 per week from Washington ESD.

•That sounds about right for what I was hoping to get. Did you have any issues getting your payments?

•First few weeks were fine but then I had to deal with adjudication for like a month. Couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD by phone.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to check your benefit calculation, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really helped when I needed to verify my weekly benefit amount.

•How much does that cost? I'm already tight on money.

•It's worth checking out their site for the details. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•I used Claimyr too when my benefits got messed up. Super easy to use and actually got me connected to someone who could help.

The Washington ESD benefit calculator is really complicated. They use something called the 'base period' which is usually the first four of the last five completed quarters before you filed. Your weekly benefit is 1/26th of your highest quarter earnings.

•This is way more complex than I thought. Why can't they just make it simple?

•I know it's confusing but once you understand the base period concept it makes more sense. The system is designed to be fair to people with varying work histories.

WASHINGTON ESD IS THE WORST!! I've been waiting 3 weeks just to find out my benefit amount and they keep telling me it's under review. How am I supposed to pay my bills when they won't even tell me what I'm getting???

Logan Chiang
•I feel you. Same thing happened to me. The waiting is the worst part.

•Did you check your online account? Sometimes the benefit amount shows up there before you get the official letter.

•Yeah I checked and it just says 'claim under review' or something like that. So frustrating!

Update: I found the Washington ESD benefit calculator online and it looks like I'll get around $468 per week based on my wages. That's actually more than I expected! Thanks everyone for the help understanding how this works.

•That sounds about right for your wage level. Just remember you'll need to file your weekly claims on time to keep getting paid.

•Good for you! Make sure you keep track of your job search activities too - Washington ESD requires 3 job contacts per week.

wait is unemployment taxable? do they take taxes out or do i have to pay later?

Ruby Blake
•Yes, unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them when you file your tax return.

The weekly benefit amount also depends on whether you have any dependents. Washington ESD adds money for dependent children under certain circumstances.

Anita George
•I don't have kids so that doesn't apply to me but good to know for others.

Miles Hammonds
•Yeah it's like an extra $25 per dependent child if you qualify. Not huge but every bit helps.

One thing to remember is that if you work part-time while collecting unemployment, Washington ESD will reduce your weekly benefit. They allow you to earn up to your weekly benefit amount before they start deducting dollar for dollar.

•That's good to know. I might try to pick up some part-time work while I'm looking for full-time.

•Just make sure you report all earnings when you file your weekly claim. Washington ESD will find out about unreported income eventually.

I've been on unemployment for 8 weeks now and still haven't figured out exactly how they calculate everything. The letter they sent me has all these numbers and codes that don't make sense.

•If you're still confused about your benefit calculation, you should call Washington ESD and ask them to explain it. They have to break it down for you.

•Like I mentioned before, Claimyr really helped me when I needed to talk to someone at Washington ESD about my benefits. Might be worth trying if you can't get through the regular way.

The minimum weekly benefit in Washington is $295 and the maximum is $999 for 2025. Most people fall somewhere in between depending on their work history.

•Thanks, that gives me a good range to expect. My calculation seemed reasonable then.

dont forget you can only collect for 26 weeks max unless they extend it during bad times

Anita George
•26 weeks should be enough time to find something new. Hopefully I won't need it all.

•yeah that's the idea. good luck with the job search

My cousin got unemployment last year and she said Washington ESD was really slow to process everything. She had to wait like 6 weeks before getting her first payment even though she filed right away.

Micah Franklin
•That's exactly what I'm worried about! I can't wait that long to get paid.

Ruby Blake
•Processing times have gotten better but it still depends on your specific situation. Simple claims usually go faster.

For anyone still having trouble getting through to Washington ESD about benefit amounts or other issues, I really recommend checking out Claimyr. It's been a lifesaver for me and several people I know who've had to deal with the unemployment system.

•I was skeptical about using a service like that but honestly after spending days trying to call Washington ESD myself, I gave Claimyr a try and it worked perfectly. Got connected to someone who could actually help me.

The benefit amount calculation is based on your total wages in the base period, not just your most recent job. So if you had multiple jobs or gaps in employment, that affects everything.
0 coins
Anita George
•I only had one job during the base period so that makes it simpler for me.
0 coins
Sophie Footman
•Yeah that definitely makes the calculation more straightforward. Multiple employers can really complicate things.

One more tip - if your benefit amount seems wrong, you can appeal it. Washington ESD makes mistakes sometimes and you have the right to challenge their calculation.
