Washington ESD - how many people are affected by unemployment in our state right now?
I've been trying to understand the bigger picture while dealing with my own claim issues. Does anyone know the current unemployment numbers for Washington state? I keep hearing different statistics and I'm curious how many people are going through the same Washington ESD process as me. My claim has been pending for weeks and I'm wondering if this is happening to thousands of others or if I'm just unlucky. Also trying to figure out if high volume is why it's so hard to get through to anyone at Washington ESD.

Last I checked Washington state unemployment rate was around 4.2% which translates to roughly 170,000 people actively receiving or applying for benefits. That's a lot of claims for Washington ESD to process.

•Wow that's way more people than I thought. No wonder the phone lines are always busy.

•Those numbers explain why my adjudication is taking forever. They're probably swamped.

The numbers fluctuate seasonally too. Winter months usually see higher claims due to construction and seasonal work ending. Right now we're probably looking at 160k-180k active claimants statewide.

•Makes sense why I can never get through on the phone. Been trying for 3 weeks straight.

•Have you tried calling right at 8am when they open? That's usually the best time.

Michael Adams
•Yeah I've tried everything. Even set alarms to call exactly at opening time but still can't get through.

I was having the same problem getting through to Washington ESD until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that helps you actually reach an agent - saved me hours of calling. They have a demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and the website is claimyr.com. Honestly after weeks of busy signals it was a lifesaver.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It worked for me. Got connected to an agent within 2 hours when I'd been trying on my own for weeks. They handle the calling process so you don't have to sit there hitting redial.

•Interesting. I might have to look into that if my current issue doesn't get resolved soon.

the system is totally broken IMO. 170k people and maybe 50 agents answering phones? Do the math - it doesn't work!

Alexis Robinson
•I think they have more than 50 agents but your point stands. The ratio is definitely not good.

•whatever the number is its not enough. been unemployed since december and still waiting on my first payment

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Washington had about 174,000 unemployed people as of last month. But that includes people not receiving benefits too, like those who exhausted their claims or don't qualify.

Ashley Adams
•So the actual number going through Washington ESD might be lower than that?

Samantha Hall
•Exactly. Probably around 120k-140k are actively dealing with Washington ESD for benefits. Still a huge number though.

Those numbers make me feel less alone in this mess. My claim has been in adjudication for 5 weeks now and I was starting to think I was the only one having problems.

•5 weeks in adjudication is rough but not uncommon unfortunately. What's the issue they're reviewing?

•Something about my separation from my last job. I quit to take care of my sick mom but I guess they need to verify that constitutes good cause.

Alexis Robinson
•Family care is usually considered good cause but they have to document everything. Hope it gets resolved soon.

I wonder how many of those 170k people are dealing with the same runaround I am. Been trying to reach someone about my overpayment notice for 2 months.

•That's exactly the type of situation where Claimyr helped me. Had an overpayment issue that needed immediate attention and couldn't wait weeks for a callback.

•I'm getting desperate enough to try anything at this point. The automated system just keeps telling me to wait.

just think about all those people filing weekly claims every week too. that's like 140k people logging in every sunday. no wonder the website crashes sometimes

Ashley Adams
•Good point! I never thought about the website traffic from weekly claims.

Samantha Hall
•The system definitely gets overloaded on Sundays. I always file mine early Monday morning to avoid the rush.

Don't forget about all the people on standby status too. That's probably another 20k-30k people in the system even though they're not actively job searching.
0 coins
Alexis Robinson
•True, standby claimants still have to file weekly claims and interact with the system.

•wish I could get standby status instead of having to apply to 3 jobs every week

The thing that gets me is all these people and Washington ESD still doesn't have enough staff to answer basic questions. Like why is it so hard to check if my job search log was received?

Chloe Mitchell
•You can usually check your job search log status through your online account under the 'Job Search Activities' section.

•Mine just shows 'submitted' but doesn't say if it was accepted or if there are any issues with it.

My cousin works for the state (not Washington ESD) and she says they've been trying to hire more people but the process takes forever because of background checks and training requirements.

•Makes sense. Dealing with people's financial information probably requires extensive vetting.

I read somewhere that during peak periods Washington ESD gets over 50,000 phone calls per day but can only handle about 15,000. Those numbers are insane.
0 coins
Ashley Adams
•That means 70% of people calling don't get through! That's terrible odds.

•Exactly why services like Claimyr exist. When the official channels are that overwhelmed, people need alternatives to actually reach someone.

It's crazy to think about all these people going through the same stress. Like there are thousands of us checking our accounts multiple times a day hoping for updates.

Michael Adams
•YES! I refresh my account like 20 times a day. It's becoming an obsession.

•same here. first thing I do every morning is check if anything changed overnight

The silver lining is that unemployment benefits do eventually get processed for the vast majority of eligible claimants. It's just the waiting and uncertainty that's brutal.
0 coins
Ashley Adams
•That's reassuring to hear. Sometimes it feels like my claim is lost in the void forever.

Aaron Lee
•Yeah the waiting is the worst part. Bills don't stop coming while we wait for adjudication to finish.

170k people dealing with this system explains why everything takes so long. I filed my appeal 3 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything back.

Chloe Mitchell
•Appeals can take 6-8 weeks unfortunately. The hearings are backlogged just like everything else.

•Great, so I might not get a hearing until March. This is ridiculous.

at least now I know I'm not alone in this nightmare. knowing 170k other people are dealing with Washington ESD makes me feel slightly less crazy

Ashley Adams
•Exactly! Sometimes I thought it was just me having bad luck with the system.

The unemployment rate might be 4.2% but it feels like 100% when you're the one trying to navigate this system. Thanks for asking this question - the numbers help put things in perspective.

•You're welcome! I was curious too and figured others might want to know the scope of what we're all dealing with.

•It definitely helps to understand the scale. Makes the delays more understandable even if they're still frustrating.

For anyone still struggling to get through to Washington ESD about urgent issues, I really can't recommend Claimyr enough. When you're one of 170k people trying to reach the same overloaded phone system, having a service that specializes in getting through makes all the difference.

Madison Allen
•I might have to try that. My disqualification letter doesn't make sense and I need to talk to someone before my appeal deadline.
0 coins
Natalie Wang
•That's exactly the type of time-sensitive situation where it's worth it. Don't risk missing your deadline because you can't get through on the phone.

Thanks everyone for the responses and numbers. It's somehow both depressing and comforting to know that 170,000 of us are in the same boat. At least now I understand why everything takes so long and why the phone system is impossible.

Chloe Mitchell
•Knowledge is power! Understanding the scale definitely helps manage expectations about response times.

•Agreed. Now I feel less like the system is personally targeting me and more like it's just overwhelmed.

•Hang in there. Your claim will eventually get processed even if it feels like forever right now.
