WA/OR combined wage claim not showing on ESD account - help needed

I'm so frustrated right now! I worked in both Washington and Oregon last year (9 months in Portland, then 4 months in Seattle). When I filed for unemployment in January, I checked the box for combined wage claim since I had income in both states. It's been 3 weeks now, and when I log into my WA ESD account, there's absolutely no indication that they're considering my Oregon wages. My benefit amount is crazy low based on just my Washington income. The weekly claim questionnaire doesn't mention anything about Oregon either. Has anyone successfully done a combined claim between WA and OR? How long does it typically take for the Oregon wages to show up? Should I be contacting Oregon's unemployment office too? I tried calling WA ESD but after 2 hours on hold I got disconnected. Starting to panic because rent is due soon and I was counting on the higher benefit amount from combining the wages.

Combined wage claims take longer to process because they have to verify your wages from both states. When I did mine (WA/ID) in 2023, it took about 5-6 weeks for everything to be properly calculated. During that time, you'll only see your WA wages and a partial benefit amount. Here's what should happen: 1. Washington (as the filing state) sends a request to Oregon for your wage information 2. Oregon has to respond and transfer your wage credits to Washington 3. Washington then recalculates your benefit amount based on combined wages You should receive a letter in the mail once they've got the Oregon wages included. Keep filing your weekly claims in the meantime - when they finalize everything, you'll get backpay for the difference between your current low amount and what you should have been receiving with the combined wages.

Thank you so much for explaining! Do you know if there's any way to check the status of this process? Like if Oregon has sent over my wage info yet? The suspense is killing me!

i had a combined claim with oregon to. took FOREVER. like 8 weeks to get the full amont. ESD is sooooo slow with the interstate stuff just keep claiming every week

8 weeks?! That's insane. Did you end up having to contact Oregon unemployment at all during the process?

This is a common issue with combined wage claims (CWC). Your claim is technically in a special processing status right now, which is why you don't see anything about Oregon in your account yet. One important tip: make sure to answer "no" to the question about working during your claim week even if they're asking about work in Oregon that you already reported on your initial application. The systems don't talk to each other properly until the combination is complete. You could try contacting Oregon's UI office to confirm they've received the wage request from Washington. Sometimes these requests fall through the cracks when moving between state systems. Get both claim numbers (WA and OR) ready before you call. Don't stop filing your weekly claims in Washington while this gets sorted out. You'll receive retroactive adjustments once everything is processed correctly.

^^ this is right. I have a friend who works for ESD and she says the interstate wage systems are from like the stone age. This is why everything slows down with combined claims. But on the plus side, once they DO process it, you'll get all the backpay at once which will be a nice little bump.

I WENT THROUGH THIS EXACT SAME THING!!! Combined WA/OR claim filed in November 2024 and it was a NIGHTMARE. ESD kept saying they had "requested" my Oregon wages but Oregon said they had already sent them. Back and forth for WEEKS! Finally I broke down and used Claimyr to get through to a real person at ESD (https://claimyr.com - they have a demo video here: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3) and the agent could see that my Oregon wages were actually sitting in their system but hadn't been properly processed. They escalated it and within 3 days the combined amount showed up in my account. Don't wait 2 months like I did thinking the system will eventually fix itself. It probably won't. You need to get someone on the phone who can see what's actually happening with your claim.

I don't remember exactly, but it was worth it to actually get through to ESD after weeks of trying. The agent I spoke with was super helpful and could immediately see what was wrong with my combined claim.

Just want to make sure, but you double-checked that all your Oregon employer info was correctly entered on your initial application, right? If there are any discrepancies between how your Oregon employer was listed in their system versus how you entered it in Washington's system, it can cause huge delays. Also, did you get laid off from your Washington job or your Oregon job? If it was the Oregon job, you might actually need to file in Oregon instead, regardless of where you live now. The rule is typically that you file in the state of your most recent employer, not where you currently live. I'm not an expert though, just sharing what I've learned from my own research on this topic!

I double-checked everything and I'm pretty sure I entered it all correctly. I was laid off from my most recent job which was in Washington, so I'm filing in the right state. But your point about the employer names is a good one... maybe there's a discrepancy there I didn't notice.

You should have received a "Monetary Determination" letter in the mail that only shows your WA wages. Then when the Oregon wages get added, you'll get a second "Revised Monetary Determination" with the combined amount. Have you received any letters about your claim yet?

Yes! I got the first letter with just my WA wages about a week after I applied. But nothing since then. I guess I should wait for that second letter before really panicking.

The whole unemployment system is literally designed to make us give up. Washington and Oregon probably blame each other while your claim sits in digital limbo. I bet neither state wants to pay their portion so they drag their feet hoping you'll find a job before they have to pay you what you're owed. I learned this the hard way with my combined claim last year.

That's exactly how it feels! Like nobody is taking responsibility for making sure this gets processed. It's so frustrating.

One other tip - if your claim is still not resolved after 6 weeks, you can request an "escalation" by sending a secure message through your ESD account. Go to the dashboard, click on "Send a message", then select "Claims Questions" from the dropdown. Explain that it's been X weeks since you filed a combined wage claim and there's still no update regarding your Oregon wages. Ask specifically for the claim to be escalated to a claims specialist. In the meantime, if you're facing financial hardship while waiting, be sure to indicate that as well. Sometimes they can expedite truly urgent cases.

Thank you for this tip! I'll definitely do that if I don't see any updates soon. I've been sending general messages but didn't specifically ask for escalation. Good to know about the financial hardship part too - I'll definitely mention that.

Update: I checked the ESD handbook and found this official statement about combined wage claims: "Combined wage claims may take 30 business days or longer to process as we must wait for other states to transfer your wages." So unfortunately, your 3-week wait is still within the normal timeframe. I know it's frustrating, but at least according to their official guidance, you're not yet at the point where something has definitely gone wrong. Hang in there!

Thank you for finding this! It helps to know this delay is actually "normal" (even if it's ridiculous). I'll try to be more patient... but I might still try that Claimyr service if it goes much longer.
