Reported hours last week but got paid today - do I need to report earnings again on my weekly claim?

Quick question about reporting earnings on my weekly claim. I worked some hours at my previous job last week (which I already reported on my claim last week). Today I actually got paid for those same hours. My question is - when I file my weekly claim tomorrow, do I need to report these earnings again since I just got the money today? Or would that be double-reporting since I already reported the hours worked last week? I really don't want to mess anything up and get hit with an overpayment notice later. Thanks for any help!

You report the earnings in the week you WORKED the hours, not when you got paid. So you already did it correctly last week! You should NOT report those same earnings again this week. The ESD system goes by when you performed the work, not when the payment hits your bank account.

Awesome, thank you! So even if the payment came this week, I don't mention it at all on this week's claim, right? Just want to be 100% sure.

Correct! You don't mention it at all in this week's claim. Only report NEW hours worked this week (if any).

As others have mentioned, you report earnings in the week you performed the work, regardless of when you actually receive payment. This is clearly stated in the ESD handbook and on their website. To avoid any issues, make sure you're keeping detailed records of all work performed and payments received, as ESD may request this information during routine audits or if there are discrepancies. If you're ever unsure about reporting requirements, it's best to contact ESD directly for clarification.

This is why the system is so broken!! How are regular people supposed to know all these tiny details? The website is confusing and the handbook is like 50 pages! And then when you try to call to ask questions you can never get through!!!

I understand your frustration. The system can certainly be complex to navigate. That's why I always recommend reading through the handbook carefully and taking notes on the sections relevant to your situation. But you're right that getting through to ESD on the phone can be extremely difficult during busy periods.

I've been in the same boat before! The key thing to remember is that ESD goes by when you EARNED the money (worked the hours), not when you RECEIVED the money (got paid). I actually got confused about this same thing last year and ended up calling ESD to make sure. If you're ever unsure or have a more complicated situation, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an ESD agent quickly. I was skeptical at first but their service actually worked - they got me through to an agent in under 30 minutes when I'd been trying for days. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Saved me tons of stress when I had a confusing reporting situation.

Thanks for explaining! And I'll check out that service if I need to contact ESD in the future. Usually I just give up after being on hold forever.

Everyone here is correct - you report wages in the week they were earned, regardless of when payment is received. This is covered in the ESD handbook under the "How to Report Earnings" section. The reason for this policy is to maintain consistency in how unemployment benefits are calculated and to ensure that claimants aren't penalized due to employer payment schedules, which can vary widely. Keep in mind that when you report earnings, you should report gross wages (before taxes and deductions) for the week in which the work was performed. If you performed work over multiple weeks but received a lump sum payment, you should divide the earnings according to when the work was actually done. If you ever receive a questionable determination or notice about this issue, you have the right to appeal within 30 days.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! That makes perfect sense. I'll keep reporting exactly as I have been - when I work the hours, not when I get paid.
