Medical leave vs. ESD unemployment for health reasons - which should I apply for?

So I'm in a bit of a confusing situation here. My doctor is recommending I take several months off work for medical reasons and gave me paperwork to support this. I initially thought I should apply for Paid Family & Medical Leave through WA state, but then I noticed that ESD unemployment also lists medical reasons as a 'good cause' to quit that might qualify me for benefits. Specifically, their website says: "You became sick or disabled, or a member of your family became sick, disabled or died, and it was necessary for you to quit work." I'm really confused about which program would be better for my situation. Has anyone gone through either process for medical reasons? Are there different benefit amounts? Can I apply for both? I'm trying to make sure I have some income during this health hiatus but don't want to mess anything up.

i got UI for similar reason last yr but it was a NIGHTMARE!!! took forver to get approved because they kept wanting more medical docs. had to do 3 jobs searchs every wk even tho i was sick. went thru all my savings b4 they paid me.

WAIT WAIT WAIT are you saying you already QUIT?? or are you just planning to? this makes a HUGE difference for both programs!!!! if you already quit you might be screwed for PFML and have to try for the UI route which is wayyyy harder.

One last thing to be aware of: PFML and unemployment have different impacts on your employer. PFML claims don't raise your employer's tax rates like unemployment claims do. So that's another reason to go the PFML route - less potential blowback when you're ready to return to work.
