Is supplemental security income the same as unemployment Washington ESD benefits?
I'm really confused about the difference between supplemental security income and unemployment benefits from Washington ESD. My neighbor told me they're basically the same thing but I don't think that's right? I'm currently receiving unemployment and wondering if I should be applying for SSI instead or if I can get both. Can someone explain what the actual differences are? I tried looking online but all the government websites are so confusing with different acronyms and I can't figure out which programs I might qualify for.

These are completely different programs! SSI (Supplemental Security Income) is a federal disability program through Social Security Administration for people with limited income and resources who are disabled, blind, or over 65. Washington ESD unemployment (UI) is for people who lost their job through no fault of their own and are able and available to work. You generally can't receive both at the same time since UI requires you to be actively seeking work.

•Oh wow, thank you! So if I'm getting unemployment I definitely shouldn't apply for SSI then? I'm able to work, just can't find a job right now.

•Exactly right. If you're able to work and actively job searching, stick with your UI benefits. SSI is specifically for people who can't work due to disability.

I made this same mistake when I first filed! Spent weeks confused about which program I needed. Washington ESD unemployment is temporary help while you look for work, SSI is long-term assistance for people who can't work. Totally different eligibility requirements too.

•How did you figure out which one to apply for? Did you call someone or just research online?

•I tried calling Washington ESD but couldn't get through for days. Finally used Claimyr.com to actually reach an agent who explained everything clearly. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Your neighbor is definitely wrong lol. SSI has nothing to do with unemployment insurance. Different agencies, different purposes, different everything. You have to meet very specific disability criteria for SSI and the application process takes months or even years.

•Years?? That's crazy! Good thing OP is asking before wasting time on the wrong application.

•Yeah SSI disability determinations are notoriously slow. Meanwhile unemployment is supposed to pay within a few weeks if everything goes smoothly.

The income limits are totally different too. SSI has very strict asset and income limits - like you can only have $2000 in resources as an individual. Washington ESD unemployment doesn't have those kinds of restrictions, it's based on your previous work history and wages.

Chloe Robinson
•Wait, so if I have more than $2000 in savings I couldn't get SSI anyway?

•Right, SSI is needs-based with strict financial limits. UI is an insurance program you paid into through your job, so your savings don't matter.

•This is why it's so important to understand which program you actually need before applying!

I work in social services and see this confusion ALL the time. People think any government assistance is the same thing. SSI = Social Security Administration, for disabled people. UI = Washington ESD, for unemployed workers. Completely separate systems with different rules.

•Thank you for clarifying! It sounds like I definitely need to stick with my unemployment claim then.

•Yeah don't overthink it. If you worked recently and lost your job, Washington ESD unemployment is what you want.

just to add - you have to file weekly claims for unemployment and meet job search requirements. SSI doesn't have weekly reporting but the initial application is like 100 pages long and requires medical records. totally different processes

Chloe Robinson
•100 pages?? Yeah I definitely don't need that hassle when I'm just looking for work.

•exactly. unemployment is way simpler if you're just temporarily out of work

Can I ask what made your neighbor think they were the same? I'm curious if there's some specific confusion going around or if they just got bad information somewhere.

•I think she just saw that both programs give monthly payments and assumed they were similar? She's not great with understanding government stuff.

Aisha Mahmood
•Ah yeah that makes sense. The monthly payment thing probably confused her.

Sean Flanagan
•Lots of people don't realize unemployment is actually weekly payments, not monthly like SSI.

One more difference - SSI recipients get Medicaid automatically but unemployment doesn't come with health insurance. You'd need to look into Washington Apple Health or marketplace plans while on UI.

Chloe Robinson
•Good point! I've been wondering about health insurance too since I lost my job. I'll look into Apple Health.

•Definitely do that ASAP. Don't wait until you need medical care to figure out your insurance situation.

The work requirements are opposite too. For unemployment you have to prove you're actively looking for work and able to work. For SSI you have to prove you CAN'T work due to disability. Like completely opposite purposes.

•This! You literally can't qualify for both because the eligibility requirements contradict each other.

Chloe Robinson
•That makes so much sense now. Thank you everyone for explaining this!

If you ever do have questions about your unemployment claim specifically, I had good luck reaching someone at Washington ESD through that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Way easier than trying to call directly.

Chloe Robinson
•I might need that! I've been trying to call Washington ESD about something else and can never get through.

•Yeah the regular phone lines are impossible. Claimyr actually got me connected within a few minutes.

Just wanted to say thanks for asking this question OP! I was wondering the same thing but felt dumb for not knowing the difference. Really helpful thread.

Chloe Robinson
•Not dumb at all! The government doesn't make it easy to understand these programs.

•Agreed, the acronyms alone are confusing enough without trying to figure out what each program actually does.

For what it's worth, if someone IS disabled and currently receiving unemployment, they should know that applying for SSI could affect their UI eligibility since you have to certify you're able to work for unemployment.

Diego Flores
•Good point. If someone's disability status changes while on unemployment, they need to report that to Washington ESD immediately.

Jamal Harris
•Exactly. You can't have it both ways - either you're able to work or you're not.

Also SSI payments are usually much lower than unemployment benefits in most cases. Unemployment is based on your previous wages while SSI has a fixed federal rate that's pretty minimal.

•Another good reason to stick with unemployment since I was making decent money at my last job.

•Right, unemployment is designed to replace a portion of your previous income, not just provide basic survival money like SSI.

The application timelines are totally different too. You can apply for unemployment online and potentially start receiving benefits within 2-3 weeks. SSI applications take months just for the initial decision, and most people get denied the first time.

•Yeah my cousin has been waiting 8 months for her SSI decision. Meanwhile unemployment should be much faster if you have all your paperwork ready.

Chloe Robinson
•Wow, 8 months! Yeah I definitely need the income now, not in 8 months.

One last thing - if you're confused about ANY part of your unemployment claim, definitely get help rather than guessing. Wrong information can mess up your benefits. I used that Claimyr service when I had questions about my weekly claims and it was super helpful.

•Thanks! I'll definitely check that out if I run into any issues with my claim.

•Smart approach. Better to get accurate info from Washington ESD directly than rely on what neighbors think they know!
