How to upload job search log for Washington ESD unemployment - system keeps rejecting my file

I've been trying to upload my job search activities to my Washington ESD account for my weekly claim and the system keeps giving me error messages. I have all my job contacts saved in a spreadsheet but when I try to upload it through the eServices portal it says 'file format not supported' or something goes wrong. I'm supposed to submit 3 job search activities per week and I have way more than that documented but can't figure out how to get them into the system properly. Has anyone else had trouble with the job search upload feature? What format does Washington ESD actually accept?

The Washington ESD system is really picky about file formats. You can't just upload a regular Excel file - it has to be in a specific format. Try saving your spreadsheet as a CSV file first, that usually works better than .xlsx files.

I tried CSV but it still wouldn't work. Maybe I'm doing something wrong with the columns?

0 coins

Make sure your columns match exactly what they're looking for - employer name, position applied for, date of contact, method of contact. The headers have to be exact.

0 coins

honestly the upload feature has never worked right for me either, I just enter everything manually one by one in the job search log section. takes forever but at least it actually saves

0 coins

That's what I'm afraid I'll have to do. I have like 15 job contacts from last week alone.

0 coins

15 job contacts in one week? You only need 3 for Washington ESD requirements, you're doing way more than necessary

I had the same exact problem last month and spent hours trying to figure it out. Finally used Claimyr to get through to an actual Washington ESD representative who walked me through it. Turns out the upload feature has been having issues and they recommended just doing manual entry for now. The rep also showed me some shortcuts in the system I didn't know about. Check out claimyr.com if you can't get through on the phone - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

That's really helpful, thank you! How long did it take to get connected to someone?

0 coins

Way faster than trying to call directly. I think it was maybe 20 minutes total instead of the hours I'd been spending on hold.

0 coins

Never heard of that service before but anything is better than sitting on hold for 3 hours like I did yesterday

The job search requirements are pretty straightforward but the system implementation is terrible. You need to document the employer name, job title you applied for, date of application, and method of contact (online, in person, phone, etc.). Make sure you're keeping track of everything because they can audit your job search activities.

0 coins

I'm definitely keeping track of everything, I just want to get it uploaded properly instead of typing it all in manually every week.

0 coins

I understand the frustration. The manual entry is tedious but it's the most reliable way right now until they fix the upload issues.

0 coins

Wait, are we supposed to be uploading files? I've been just filling out the job search log directly in my eServices account every week when I file my claim.

0 coins

You can do either - upload a file with all your job search activities or enter them manually in the system. Both count the same way.

0 coins

Oh okay, I didn't even know the upload option existed. I've been doing manual entry this whole time.

0 coins

Manual entry is probably more reliable anyway based on what everyone's saying about the upload problems

0 coins

the whole job search requirement thing is such a hassle anyway. like I'm already looking for work obviously, why do I have to document every single thing I do?

0 coins

It's to ensure people are actively seeking employment and not just collecting benefits. Washington ESD has to verify that claimants are meeting the work search requirements.

0 coins

I get why they do it, just saying it's annoying to have to prove it every week

0 coins

Make sure you're not just applying to random jobs to meet the quota. Washington ESD wants to see genuine job search efforts in your field or related fields. Quality over quantity.

0 coins

All my applications are legitimate, I'm just applying to a lot of places because the job market is competitive in my field.

0 coins

That's good then. Just wanted to make sure you weren't padding your numbers with irrelevant applications.

0 coins

I've never had issues with the file upload but I use a very simple format - just a basic CSV with the four required columns and nothing fancy. Maybe try stripping out any extra formatting or columns?

0 coins

What exactly are the four required columns? I might have extra stuff in my spreadsheet that's causing problems.

0 coins

Employer Name, Position Applied For, Date of Contact, Contact Method. That's it. No extra columns or fancy formatting.

0 coins

I'll try creating a clean version with just those columns and see if that works better.

0 coins

I had similar issues until I realized the date format matters too. Make sure you're using MM/DD/YYYY format for the Date of Contact column - I was using DD/MM/YYYY and it kept rejecting my file even though everything else looked right.

The Washington ESD website has been having all kinds of technical issues lately. Half the time I can't even log into my account, let alone upload files.

0 coins

Same here! I thought it was just my internet connection but apparently it's a widespread problem.

0 coins

Yeah it's definitely on their end. The whole system needs an overhaul.

0 coins

Update on the Claimyr thing - I used it again this week to ask about a different issue and the rep mentioned they're working on fixing the job search upload problems. Should be resolved in the next system update apparently.

0 coins

That's great news! Do you know when the next update is supposed to happen?

0 coins

She didn't give me an exact date but said it should be within the next few weeks.

0 coins

Pro tip: if you're doing manual entry, you can save time by copying and pasting company names and job titles if you're applying to multiple positions at the same company.

0 coins

That's actually a really good tip, I didn't think about copying and pasting to speed things up.

0 coins

Yeah it cuts down the time significantly, especially if you're applying to big companies with multiple openings.

0 coins

I work in IT and the Washington ESD system architecture is probably from the stone age. File upload issues are usually related to outdated server configurations or file size restrictions.

0 coins

My file is pretty small though, just a basic spreadsheet with maybe 20 rows of data.

0 coins

Size might not be the issue then. Could be the file encoding or special characters in your data causing problems.

0 coins

Does anyone know if there's a limit to how many job search activities you can enter per week? I've been documenting everything but don't want to trigger any red flags.

0 coins

There's no official limit as far as I know. As long as they're legitimate job search activities, more is generally better than less.

0 coins

Okay good, I was worried that too many might look suspicious somehow.

0 coins

just tried the claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked great. got through to someone at washington esd in like 15 minutes and they helped me figure out my job search issue

0 coins

Awesome! I'm definitely going to try that if I can't get the upload working soon.

0 coins

yeah definitely worth it, way better than trying to call directly

0 coins

For what it's worth, I've been doing manual entry for months and it really doesn't take that long once you get into a routine. Maybe 10-15 minutes per week.

0 coins

That's not as bad as I thought it would be. I was imagining it would take like an hour every week.

0 coins

Nah, it's pretty quick if you have all your info organized beforehand.

0 coins

Make sure you're keeping your own backup records too, not just relying on the Washington ESD system. I've heard of people's job search logs getting wiped out by system glitches.

0 coins

Good point, I already have everything in my own spreadsheet so I should be covered.

0 coins

Perfect, that way you're protected if anything goes wrong with their system.

0 coins

The job search requirement seems to vary by county or something? My friend in Spokane says she only has to do 2 activities per week but I have to do 3 here in King County.

0 coins

I believe it's 3 activities per week statewide for regular unemployment benefits. Your friend might be thinking of a different requirement or have special circumstances.

0 coins

Maybe she's on a different type of claim or something. I'll have to ask her about that.

0 coins

Has anyone tried uploading from a different browser? Sometimes these government websites work better with Internet Explorer or Edge instead of Chrome.

0 coins

I've been using Chrome, maybe I should try a different browser. Worth a shot I guess.

0 coins

Yeah, older government systems sometimes have compatibility issues with newer browsers.

0 coins

Just wanted to follow up and say thanks to everyone for the advice. I ended up using Claimyr to talk to someone at Washington ESD and they confirmed the upload feature is having issues. They walked me through the manual entry process and it's actually not that bad. Also learned about some other features in the system I didn't know about.

0 coins

Glad it worked out for you! That's exactly the kind of help I got when I used their service.

0 coins

Thanks for the update! I'm going to stick with manual entry for now and maybe try the upload feature again once they fix it.

0 coins

Sounds like a good plan. The rep said they're hoping to have the upload issues resolved soon.
