How to enter unemployment on taxes - Washington ESD 1099-G questions

I received unemployment benefits from Washington ESD last year and now I'm trying to figure out how to enter unemployment on taxes. I got my 1099-G form but I'm confused about where exactly this goes on my tax return. Do I enter the full amount shown on the 1099-G? I had taxes withheld from some payments but not others because I changed my withholding election midway through the year. Anyone know the right way to handle this?

unemployment benefits are fully taxable as regular income. You'll enter the amount from Box 1 of your 1099-G on your tax return where it asks for unemployment compensation. If you had federal taxes withheld, that amount from Box 4 goes with your other withholdings.

Thanks! So the Box 1 amount goes on the unemployment line and Box 4 goes with my W-2 withholdings?

0 coins

Exactly right. They're treated separately but both are important for your tax calculation.

make sure you actually received your 1099-G from Washington ESD. Mine was delayed and I had to download it from their website. Check your SecureAccess Washington account if you haven't gotten it yet.

0 coins

Good point, I did get mine from the website since the mail was taking forever.

Had the same tax situation last year. One thing to watch out for - if you received any overpayment notices from Washington ESD after getting your 1099-G, you might need to adjust the taxable amount. The 1099-G shows what they paid you, but if you had to pay some back, you can potentially deduct that repayment.

0 coins

I didn't have any overpayments thankfully, but that's good to know for others reading this.

0 coins

wait what? if I paid back an overpayment can I deduct that from my taxes? I paid back $800 last year

0 coins

Yes, generally if you repaid unemployment benefits in the same tax year, you can deduct the repayment. But definitely check with a tax professional for your specific situation.

For anyone still waiting on their 1099-G, I had to call Washington ESD to get mine reissued. Took forever to get through though - ended up using claimyr.com to actually reach an agent. They have this system that calls you back when an agent is available instead of waiting on hold. Here's their demo video: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Got my tax form issue resolved same day.

Interesting, never heard of that service. Did it actually work to get through?

0 coins

Yeah it was pretty straightforward. Way better than spending hours on hold just to get disconnected.

0 coins

quick question - if I received UI benefits in 2024 but didn't have taxes withheld, am I going to owe a bunch at tax time?

0 coins

Possibly yes. Unemployment is taxed as regular income, so if no taxes were withheld you'll owe on that income just like any other job where taxes weren't taken out.

0 coins

ugh ok I better start saving up then. wish someone had told me that when I started claiming

0 coins

update - just finished entering everything and it looks like I'm getting a small refund despite the unemployment income. Having some taxes withheld definitely helped.

0 coins

nice! yeah having at least 10% withheld usually prevents any big surprises at tax time

0 coins

Does anyone know if the state of Washington taxes unemployment benefits too? I know there's no state income tax here but wanted to double check.

0 coins

No, Washington state has no state income tax so you only deal with federal taxes on your unemployment benefits.

0 coins

Perfect, one less thing to worry about then!

0 coins

been doing my own taxes for years and unemployment is pretty straightforward. Just remember that if you received benefits in January for December weeks, those go on the tax year when you actually received the payment, not when you earned it.

0 coins

Good point about the timing. The 1099-G should have the right year though right?

0 coins

Yes exactly, the 1099-G will show the correct tax year for when payments were actually made.

0 coins

pro tip: if you're using tax software like TurboTax or H&R Block, there's usually a specific section for unemployment income. Don't try to enter it as miscellaneous income or anything like that.

0 coins

yep learned this the hard way last year. had to go back and fix it because I put it in the wrong section initially

0 coins

still confused about the overpayment thing from earlier. I got my 1099-G showing $12,000 in benefits but then had to pay back $800 in November. So do I report $12,000 or $11,200 on my taxes?

0 coins

You report the full $12,000 from the 1099-G as income, then claim the $800 repayment as a deduction elsewhere on your return. The 1099-G amount should match what you report as unemployment income.

0 coins

ok that makes sense, thanks for clarifying

0 coins

Anyone else think it's crazy that unemployment benefits are taxable? Like you're already struggling financially and then they want to tax the assistance money too.

0 coins

I get the frustration but unemployment insurance is designed to replace your regular income, which would have been taxed anyway. At least you can choose to have taxes withheld so it's not a shock later.

0 coins

true I guess when you put it that way. still feels wrong though lol

0 coins

For what it's worth, if you're doing taxes yourself make sure you keep a copy of your 1099-G with your tax records. The IRS gets a copy too so the amounts need to match up.

0 coins

Good reminder, I always forget about keeping the supporting documents.

0 coins

question about timing - I received my last unemployment payment in early January 2025 for December 2024 weeks. Does that payment go on my 2024 taxes or 2025 taxes?

0 coins

2025 taxes. It's based on when you actually received the money, not what weeks it was for.

0 coins

thanks! so I'll get a separate 1099-G for that payment next year then

0 coins

just wanted to add - if you worked part time while getting unemployment, make sure you have both your W-2 and 1099-G when doing taxes. Both are important income sources that need to be reported.

0 coins

Yes I had some part time work too, definitely need both forms.

0 coins

heads up for anyone who might need to contact Washington ESD about 1099-G issues - I tried calling for weeks about a missing form. Finally used that claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and got connected to an agent who sent my form electronically same day. Worth it if you're stuck.

0 coins

How much does that service cost? Trying to decide if it's worth it for my situation.

0 coins

They explain their pricing on the website claimyr.com. For me it was worth it since I was getting nowhere with regular calling and needed the form for my tax deadline.

0 coins

For anyone who got a corrected 1099-G after filing, you can file an amended return if the amounts changed significantly. Usually not worth it for small differences though.

0 coins

Mei Liu

what would count as a significant difference? like $50 or more?

0 coins

I'd say if it changes your tax owed by more than $25-50 it's probably worth amending. But definitely depends on your situation.

0 coins

PSA: if you're married filing jointly, make sure your spouse knows about the unemployment income too. It affects your combined tax liability even if only one person received benefits.

0 coins

good point, communication is key especially for tax stuff

0 coins

last thing - if this is your first time dealing with unemployment on taxes and you're feeling overwhelmed, consider getting help from a tax preparer. The cost might be worth the peace of mind, especially if you have other complicating factors.

0 coins

That's good advice. I managed to figure it out myself but definitely considered getting professional help.

0 coins

agreed, taxes are stressful enough without adding uncertainty about doing it right

0 coins

thanks everyone for all the helpful info! this thread definitely made the whole process less confusing for me.

0 coins

Same here, glad it helped others too!
