How to check unemployment overpayment balance - Washington ESD portal confusing
I got hit with an overpayment notice from Washington ESD last month for about $2,800 and I've been making payments but I can't figure out how to see my current balance. I've looked all over the SecureAccess Washington site and my ESD account but there's no clear section showing what I still owe. The original notice had a payment plan option but didn't explain how to track progress. Has anyone found where this information is hidden in their system? I don't want to accidentally miss payments or pay too much.

You need to log into your ESD account through SAW and look under the 'Overpayments' section in your account dashboard. It should show your original balance, payments made, and remaining balance. Sometimes it takes a few days to update after you make a payment.

•I've looked everywhere in my account and I don't see an 'Overpayments' section. Is it maybe under a different name?

•Try looking under 'Account Summary' or 'Financial Information' - they sometimes move things around on that site.

•The phone system is absolutely terrible. I've been trying to get through for weeks about my overpayment questions.

•I had success using Claimyr to get through to an actual person at ESD. It's a service that calls for you and connects you when someone answers. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that but honestly anything is better than sitting on hold for 3+ hours just to get hung up on

There should be a 'Debt Management' or 'Collections' link somewhere in your ESD online account. The interface is terrible but the information is there. You might also try calling the overpayment collections line directly instead of the main ESD number.

•Do you happen to know that collections number? I only have the main ESD line.

•I think it's 800-246-9763 but double check that on the ESD website. They have different numbers for different issues.

Why is everything with Washington ESD so impossibly complicated? You'd think checking your balance would be basic functionality but NOPE. Same with trying to set up payment plans or understanding what the overpayment was even for in the first place.

•Tell me about it. Got an overpayment notice out of nowhere with barely any explanation of how they calculated it.

•The system definitely needs improvement but the information is available if you know where to look. It's just not user-friendly at all.

I had this exact problem and finally got it resolved by speaking to an ESD agent. They were able to pull up my overpayment details immediately and explain exactly what I still owed. The online system doesn't always show current balances properly, especially if you've made recent payments.

•How did you manage to actually talk to someone? Every time I call I either get disconnected or told the call volume is too high.

•I used Claimyr after getting frustrated with the regular phone system. It automatically redials and holds your place in line, then calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me hours of sitting on hold.

Check your mail too - they sometimes send updated balance statements even if the online system isn't showing current info. I got a letter last week with my updated balance after making payments.

•Good point, I'll keep an eye out for mail. How often do they send those updates?

•Not sure about the schedule but I seem to get something every month or two when I'm on a payment plan.

ugh this is giving me anxiety, I have an overpayment too but haven't started paying yet because I can't figure out how much it even is after my appeal was denied. do they charge interest on these things?

Felix Grigori
•Yes, they can charge interest and penalties if you don't set up a payment plan. Don't wait - contact them ASAP to avoid additional charges.

•great, more stress. why is this system designed to be so confusing when people are already struggling?

Another option is to check if your browser is blocking any scripts on the ESD site. Sometimes the overpayment balance section won't load properly if you have strict privacy settings or ad blockers running.

•I'll try disabling my ad blocker and see if that helps. Didn't think about that possibility.

•This actually worked for me! Had to turn off my privacy extensions to see the full account details.

Been dealing with ESD overpayment issues for months now. The online system is broken half the time and when you call they act like it's your fault you can't find basic information. At least when I finally got through they were able to tell me my exact balance and payment history.

•How long did it take you to get through when you called?

•First few times I tried the regular way it was hopeless. Then someone mentioned Claimyr and that actually worked - took maybe 30 minutes total including the callback.

just a heads up that if you're making online payments through the ESD site, save your confirmation numbers! I had an issue where they claimed I missed a payment but I had proof of the transaction.

•Good advice! I've been screenshotting everything just in case.

•Smart. Their system has glitches and you don't want to deal with incorrect penalties.

Update for anyone still struggling with this: I called using Claimyr yesterday and the agent was able to email me a detailed breakdown of my overpayment balance, payment history, and remaining amount owed. Much easier than trying to navigate their confusing website.

•That sounds perfect! I'm definitely going to try Claimyr. This is way too stressful to keep guessing about my balance.

•wait, they can email you the details? I didn't know that was an option. That would solve everything.

•Yeah, the agent offered to send it when I explained I couldn't find the information on the website. Really helpful.

For what it's worth, I found my overpayment balance by logging into SAW, going to 'Unemployment Services', then 'View Benefit Information', and there was a link for 'Overpayment Details' at the bottom of that page. Might be different for everyone though.

•I'll check that path - maybe I was looking in the wrong section this whole time.

•The website structure changes so often that links move around. What works for one person might not work for another.

This thread is so helpful! I've been stressing about my overpayment balance for weeks. Sounds like calling is really the only reliable way to get accurate information.

•Yeah but good luck getting through. That's why people are using services like Claimyr now.

•I'm going to try that. Better than the endless hold music.

One more tip: if you do get through to ESD, ask them to explain exactly how your overpayment was calculated. Sometimes there are errors in their calculations and you might not actually owe as much as they claim.

Oliver Cheng
•That's a really good point. I just assumed their calculation was correct but I should probably verify it.

•This happened to my neighbor - they had calculated his overpayment wrong and he ended up owing $800 less than the original notice.

thanks everyone for all the suggestions. this has been super stressful but at least now I have some actual steps to try instead of just randomly clicking around the ESD website

•Definitely try calling through Claimyr if the website stuff doesn't work out. Having an actual person explain everything makes such a difference.

•Agreed, I'm planning to call tomorrow morning. This thread gave me hope that I can actually get this figured out.
