How soon can I apply for unemployment after being laid off in Washington?
Got laid off yesterday from my manufacturing job due to company downsizing. Manager said it was effective immediately and gave me my final paycheck plus two weeks severance. I'm wondering how quickly I can file for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD? Should I wait until the severance runs out or can I apply right away? I've never been unemployed before so not sure about the timing rules.

You can file your initial claim immediately after your last day of work. Don't wait! The sooner you file, the sooner your claim can be processed. Your severance might affect when you can actually collect benefits, but you should still file the claim right away.

•Thanks! So I should go ahead and apply today even though I got severance pay?

•Yes absolutely. Washington ESD will determine how the severance affects your eligibility dates, but filing early protects your claim start date.

File ASAP but heads up - if you got severance pay you might have a waiting period before benefits start. When I got laid off in 2023 my severance delayed my first payment by 3 weeks.

•Ugh that's frustrating but good to know. Did you still have to do the weekly claims during that waiting period?

•Yeah you still file weekly claims even during the severance period. It's annoying but you have to keep up with it.

The key thing is filing within the first week after your separation. There's no benefit to waiting and it could potentially hurt your claim. Go to esd.wa.gov and start your application. You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and reason for separation details.

•Perfect, I have all that info ready. Should I mention the severance when I file or wait for them to ask?

•Be upfront about the severance amount and dates when you file. Washington ESD will find out anyway and being honest from the start prevents issues later.

OP if you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone to ask questions about your claim, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent in under 10 minutes. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•How much does that cost though? I'm already worried about money being tight.

•It's way cheaper than losing benefits due to confusion or delays. Plus the time savings alone was worth it for me - no more redialing for hours.

been there! filed mine the day after I got canned and it took about 2 weeks to get approved. severance didn't delay me much since it was only 1 week worth

•That's encouraging! Mine is 2 weeks so hopefully similar timeline.

One more important point - make sure you understand the difference between your last day of work and your separation date for UI purposes. Sometimes they're different depending on how severance is structured.

•What do you mean by separation date? I thought it would just be my last day worked.

•Your separation date for unemployment might be when your severance period ends rather than your last physical work day. Washington ESD determines this based on your specific situation.

The Washington ESD system is so confusing for first timers. I remember being overwhelmed when I had to file. Make sure you save copies of everything you submit!

•Good advice! I'll screenshot everything as I go through the process.

•Also keep records of your job search activities from day one, even during severance. You'll need them later.

Manufacturing layoffs are usually pretty straightforward for unemployment approval since it's clearly not your fault. Your employer will likely not contest the claim either since they initiated the layoff.

•That's reassuring. My manager even said they'd provide a good reference and that this was purely business/budget related.

•Perfect, that documentation will help if there are any questions during processing. Keep any emails or letters about the layoff.

Don't forget you'll need to register with WorkSource too for the job search requirements. They're pretty strict about that part in Washington.

•Is that something I do right away or can I wait until benefits start?

•You should register as soon as you file your claim. It's required for ongoing eligibility even if you're not collecting yet due to severance.

Also just FYI the online system crashes sometimes during peak hours. Try filing early morning or late evening if you run into issues.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll try first thing tomorrow morning.

Wait so if I have severance I still file weekly claims even though I'm not getting paid unemployment yet?? That seems weird...

Emma Johnson
•Yes you must continue filing weekly claims during any waiting period. If you skip weeks you can lose eligibility permanently.

•Ugh okay good to know. The whole system is so confusing.

For anyone struggling to reach Washington ESD agents about claim questions, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier worked great when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Much better than the endless busy signals.

•I'm skeptical of paying for something that should be free but if it actually works...

•I was skeptical too but after wasting entire days trying to call I figured it was worth trying. Got through immediately and resolved my issue same day.

Manufacturing industry has been brutal lately. Sorry you got caught up in the downsizing. At least unemployment should be straightforward for you.

•Yeah it's been rough across the whole sector. Hoping to find something soon but grateful for the safety net.

One last thing - when you file make sure to select 'lack of work' or 'layoff' as your separation reason, not 'quit' or anything else. The reason code affects processing time and approval.

•Got it! Definitely don't want to accidentally mess that up.

Lincoln Ramiro
•Exactly. Small details like that can cause big delays if not handled correctly from the start.

The severance thing is so annoying. Like why punish people for getting a little cushion from their employer??
0 coins
Emma Johnson
•It's not really punishment, it's because severance is considered wages for the period it covers. The system assumes you're not truly unemployed until those wages end.

•I guess that makes sense but still frustrating when you need the money.

File today! I made the mistake of waiting a week when I got laid off and it just delayed everything unnecessarily.

Good luck OP! The process isn't too bad once you get started. Just stay on top of the weekly claims and job search requirements.

Final reminder - keep detailed records of everything related to your layoff and unemployment claim. Documentation is key if any issues come up during processing.

Don't stress too much about the severance delay. It goes by faster than you think and then you'll have steady UI payments while job hunting.

•That's reassuring. The financial stress is the worst part of all this.
