How much will my Washington ESD unemployment be while working part-time?

I just got hired for a part-time job that pays about $200 a week but I'm still collecting unemployment. I know I can work part-time while on unemployment but I'm confused about how much my benefits will be reduced. My weekly benefit amount is $350 right now. Does anyone know how Washington ESD calculates partial unemployment benefits when you're working? I don't want to mess up my claim by reporting wrong.

Washington ESD uses a formula for partial unemployment. They subtract your gross earnings from your weekly benefit amount, but you get to keep the first $5 plus 1/4 of the rest. So if you earn $200, you'd subtract $200 from your $350 benefit, but then add back $5 plus 1/4 of $195 (which is about $49). Your benefit would be around $204 instead of $350.

That's actually not too bad! I was worried I'd lose almost all my benefits. So I'd still get $204 plus the $200 from work?

0 coins

Exactly! That's the whole point of partial unemployment - to encourage people to take part-time work without losing everything.

0 coins

Just make sure you report ALL your earnings when you file your weekly claim. Even if you think it's not much, Washington ESD tracks everything and you don't want to get hit with an overpayment later.

0 coins

Good point. I'll definitely report everything. Do I report gross or net earnings?

0 coins

Always report gross earnings - before taxes and deductions. Washington ESD wants to know what you actually earned, not what you took home.

I've been trying to figure out the same thing but can't get through to Washington ESD to ask questions. Their phone lines are always busy and I've been on hold for hours multiple times. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

0 coins

I had the same problem until I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They help you get through to Washington ESD agents when you can't reach them yourself. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It saved me so much time and frustration.

0 coins

Interesting, I'll check that out. I really need to talk to someone about my specific situation since I have multiple part-time jobs.

0 coins

Wait, I'm confused. I thought if you worked at all you couldn't get unemployment? This is news to me. I've been turning down part-time work because I didn't want to lose my benefits.

0 coins

No, that's a common misconception! You can definitely work part-time while on unemployment. The whole system is designed to help people transition back to full-time work.

0 coins

Wow, I feel stupid now. I've been missing out on income this whole time. How do I find out more about the rules?

0 coins

Check the Washington ESD website under 'Working While Receiving Benefits' or call them directly. The rules are pretty straightforward once you understand them.

The partial unemployment calculation can get tricky if your hours vary week to week. I work retail and sometimes get 15 hours, sometimes 25. My benefits change every week based on what I earn.

0 coins

That's exactly my situation! My new job said hours will vary. Do I just report whatever I earned that week?

0 coins

Yes, you report earnings for each week separately. Some weeks you might get more unemployment, some weeks less, depending on your work hours.

0 coins

One thing to watch out for - if you start earning more than your weekly benefit amount plus the $5 allowance, you won't get any unemployment that week. But you don't lose your claim, you just don't get paid for that week.

0 coins

So if I had a really good week and earned $400, I'd get $0 in unemployment but my claim would still be active?

0 coins

Exactly. Your claim stays open and you can collect again the following week if your earnings drop back down.

0 coins

I've been doing this for months and it works great. The key is being honest about your earnings and understanding that some income is better than no income. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

0 coins

That's a good way to think about it. I was worried about the math but it sounds like it works out to be helpful overall.

0 coins

Does anyone know if commission counts as earnings? I might get a sales job that pays mostly commission and I'm not sure how to report that.

0 coins

Yes, commission counts as earnings and you report it the week you receive it, not when you earned it. So if you get a commission check on Friday, you report it for that week.

0 coins

Thanks! That makes sense. I was worried about how to handle the timing.

0 coins

I made the mistake of not reporting small amounts of cash work thinking it didn't matter. Washington ESD found out somehow and I got hit with an overpayment notice. Don't make my mistake - report everything!

0 coins

Yikes, how did they find out? I wouldn't even think to report like $20 in cash.

0 coins

They cross-reference with other agencies and employers. Even cash work can show up if the employer reports it. It's not worth the risk.

0 coins

The formula seems complicated but Washington ESD's website has a calculator tool that helps you figure out what you'll get. It's under the 'Working While Receiving Benefits' section.

0 coins

I'll definitely check that out. A calculator would make this so much easier to understand.

Just started a part-time job last week and was stressed about this same thing. Turns out it's not as scary as I thought. My benefits went down but not by much, and having some work income plus unemployment is actually better than just unemployment alone.

0 coins

That's reassuring to hear! I think I was overthinking it.

0 coins

Definitely overthinking it. The system is designed to help, not hurt you for working.

I had to call Washington ESD about this exact question last month and couldn't get through for days. Finally used Claimyr to get connected and the agent explained everything clearly. Worth it when you need actual answers from someone who knows the system.

0 coins

I'm definitely going to try Claimyr. I've wasted so much time trying to call on my own.

0 coins

Don't forget you still have to do your job search requirements even if you're working part-time. I almost missed that and got worried about my claim.

0 coins

Good reminder! I need to keep track of my job search activities even with the part-time job.

0 coins

Yeah, you're still considered partially unemployed so all the regular requirements apply.

0 coins

The math works out pretty well usually. I've been working part-time for two months while collecting and it's helped me transition back to full-time work gradually.

0 coins

That's exactly what I'm hoping for - a gradual transition back to full-time work.

0 coins

Make sure your employer knows you're on unemployment too. Some employers don't realize their employees are collecting benefits and it can help them understand your situation better.

0 coins

Good point. I'll mention it to my new supervisor so they understand why I'm looking for more hours.

0 coins

I was in the same boat and found that working part-time actually helped me feel more confident about going back to full-time work. The partial benefits made the transition less stressful financially.

0 coins

That's a great perspective. I've been worried about losing the safety net but this sounds like it eases you back into working.

0 coins

Just remember to report your earnings honestly every week. The system works when everyone follows the rules. Don't try to game it or hide income - it's not worth the risk.

0 coins

Absolutely. I'd rather get a little less money than risk losing my benefits entirely.

0 coins

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD with questions, I've heard good things about Claimyr. My sister used them when she had issues with her partial unemployment calculations and they got her connected to an agent who walked her through everything.

0 coins

Several people have mentioned Claimyr now. Sounds like it might be worth trying if I run into problems.

0 coins

The partial unemployment program is actually one of the better parts of the Washington ESD system. It encourages work instead of discouraging it. Just be honest about your earnings and you should be fine.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice! I feel much more confident about starting this job now.

0 coins

Glad we could help! Come back if you have more questions once you start working.
