How much will Washington ESD unemployment pay me weekly?
I just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant after working there for 2 years. Made about $52,000 annually. I'm trying to figure out how much Washington ESD will pay me per week so I can budget for rent and bills. Does anyone know how they calculate the weekly benefit amount? I've heard it's based on your earnings but I'm not sure exactly how much I'll get.

It's based on your highest earning quarter from the past 18 months. They take that quarter's earnings and divide by 26 to get your weekly benefit amount, but there's a cap.

•So if I made $13,000 in my best quarter that would be $500 per week? That seems high.

•No, that's not quite right. The formula is more complex than that.

Washington ESD uses a different calculation. They look at your base period earnings (first 4 of last 5 completed quarters) and calculate from there. For 2025, the maximum weekly benefit is $999 and minimum is $295. Most people get somewhere between 50-60% of their average weekly wage.

•That's helpful! So with $52k annually I'm looking at maybe $500-600 per week?

•Probably closer to $500-550 range, but you won't know for sure until Washington ESD processes your claim.

•The exact formula is on the Washington ESD website if you want to calculate it yourself before filing.

I had a similar situation last year when I got laid off. Took forever to get through to Washington ESD on the phone to check my benefit amount. If you need to reach them quickly, I discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work to get through to Washington ESD?

•Yeah it worked for me when I was stuck in adjudication. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•Interesting, I might need to try that if I have issues with my claim.

Just remember you have to file your weekly claims every week to keep getting paid. Missing even one week can mess up your whole claim.

•Good point. When do I start filing weekly claims?
0 coins
Maya Diaz
•Usually starts the week after you file your initial claim, but check your account for the exact date.

Don't forget about the job search requirements too! You need 3 job search activities per week to keep getting benefits.

•What counts as a job search activity?
0 coins
Tami Morgan
•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, even some online training courses count.

•Make sure to log everything in your job search record. Washington ESD can audit you anytime.

The benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website is pretty accurate. I used it before filing and it was within $20 of my actual weekly amount.

•I'll check that out, thanks! Better to know ahead of time.

•Yeah that calculator saved me from having unrealistic expectations about my benefits.

Make sure you file as soon as possible. There's a waiting week before you start getting paid, and you can't backdate claims.

Arjun Patel
•Waiting week? So I won't get paid for the first week I'm unemployed?
0 coins
Isaac Wright
•Exactly. The first week is unpaid, then you start getting benefits if you're eligible.

•Unless you're on standby from your employer, then it might be different.

I'm getting $623 per week and I was making about $58k before. Sounds like you'll be in a similar range based on your salary.

•That's really helpful to know! Thanks for sharing your actual amount.

•How long did it take for your claim to get approved?
0 coins
Rami Samuels
•About 2 weeks, but I know some people wait longer if they go into adjudication.

ugh the whole system is so confusing! I've been trying to figure out my benefit amount for days and keep getting different answers online

•The Washington ESD website has the official formula if you want to do the math yourself.

•I tried but got confused with all the quarters and base periods stuff

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr to talk to someone at Washington ESD directly. Sometimes you just need a real person to explain it.

Don't count on getting the maximum amount unless you were making really good money. Most people get way less than they expect.

Arjun Patel
•Yeah I'm not expecting the max, just trying to get a realistic idea for budgeting.

•Smart approach. Better to underestimate than be disappointed.

Also remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income! You can have taxes withheld or pay quarterly.

Arjun Patel
•Oh good point, I forgot about taxes. How much do they typically withhold?
0 coins
Nina Chan
•10% federal if you choose to have it withheld. Washington doesn't have state income tax.

Tami Morgan
•Definitely have them withhold taxes unless you want a big bill next April.

File online if you can, it's way faster than calling. The phone lines are always jammed.

Arjun Patel
•Yeah I was planning to file online. Heard the phone wait times are terrible.

Ruby Knight
•Hours and hours sometimes. Online is definitely the way to go for filing.

•Online filing is fine, but if you run into issues later that's when Claimyr becomes really useful for actually reaching someone.

Just went through this process last month. With similar income to yours I'm getting $587 per week. Took about 10 days to get my first payment.

Arjun Patel
•That's really close to what I was hoping for. Did you have any issues with your claim?
0 coins
Diego Castillo
•Nope, pretty straightforward since it was a layoff. Just make sure you have all your employer info ready when you file.

Make sure your employer reported your wages correctly to Washington ESD or your benefit amount could be wrong.
0 coins
Arjun Patel
•How would I know if they reported wrong?
0 coins
Logan Stewart
•You can check your wage history on the Washington ESD website after you create an account.

Tony Brooks
•If there are wage discrepancies you'll need to contact both your employer and Washington ESD to get it fixed.

Whatever you do, don't work any side jobs without reporting it on your weekly claims. They will find out and you'll have to pay back overpayments.
0 coins
Arjun Patel
•Good to know. So any income at all needs to be reported?
0 coins
Mikayla Brown
•Yep, even small amounts. Better to report everything and let them calculate the reduction.

The whole adjudication process can really delay your benefits if there are any questions about your separation from work.
0 coins
Arjun Patel
•Since I was laid off due to lack of work, that shouldn't be an issue right?
0 coins
Sean Matthews
•Should be fine, but sometimes they still ask for more info from your employer.

Yara Campbell
•If you do get stuck in adjudication, that's another situation where Claimyr can help you reach someone to check on the status.

Benefits last for up to 26 weeks typically, but it depends on your work history and the unemployment rate.
0 coins
Arjun Patel
•26 weeks should be enough time to find something new hopefully.

Ali Anderson
•Yeah, and you can always extend if you're in a training program or certain other situations.

Don't forget to register with WorkSourceWA too, it's required for most people to keep getting benefits.
0 coins
Arjun Patel
•Is that separate from filing the initial claim?
0 coins
Zadie Patel
•Yeah it's a separate registration but Washington ESD will tell you when you need to do it.

Tami Morgan
•Usually within your first few weeks of claiming benefits, they'll send you instructions.
