How much is unemployment now in Washington - benefit amounts for 2025?
Can someone tell me how much unemployment benefits are paying out now in Washington? I just got laid off from my retail job last week and need to figure out if it's even worth filing. I was making about $16/hour for 35 hours a week. My friend said the amounts changed recently but she wasn't sure by how much. Also do they still make you do the job search thing every week? I haven't filed for unemployment in like 4 years so I'm totally lost on what the current requirements are.

The weekly benefit amount depends on your earnings history but the maximum weekly benefit in Washington is currently $999 per week. For your income level you'd probably get somewhere around $350-450 per week. You can use the benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website to get a better estimate. And yes, you still need to do 3 job search activities per week and log them in your WorkSource account.

•Thanks! $350-450 would actually help a lot. Do you know if they count online applications as job search activities?

•Yes, online applications count as long as you keep records of where you applied, the position, and the date. Make sure to save confirmation emails or take screenshots.

•3 weeks?? Did they say why it took so long?

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD on the phone, I'd suggest trying Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get connected to an actual agent without waiting on hold for hours. I used it when my claim got stuck in adjudication and it was a lifesaver. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way better than calling dozens of times yourself.

•Never heard of this before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit, I was skeptical too but it got me through to an agent in like 20 minutes instead of spending all day calling. Check out claimyr.com if you want to see what it's about.

•Interesting, might have to try this if I run into issues with my claim.

For 2025, the benefit calculation is still based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. Your weekly benefit amount will be approximately 3.85% of your highest quarter earnings, up to the maximum of $999. Given your work history at $16/hour for 35 hours weekly, you're looking at roughly $2,184 per month gross, so your highest quarter would be around $6,552. That puts your weekly benefit around $252-280 range, not the $350-450 mentioned earlier.

•You might be right, I was estimating on the high side. The exact calculation can be tricky without knowing their full work history.

•Wait, so it could be closer to $250? That's still helpful but definitely changes my budget planning.

•Use the official Washington ESD benefit calculator for the most accurate estimate. It factors in all quarters of your base period, not just your most recent work.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A MESS RIGHT NOW. I've been waiting 6 WEEKS for my adjudication to clear and every time I call they just say "we're processing your claim." Meanwhile bills are piling up and I can't get a straight answer about when I'll see money. The job search requirements are stupid too - they want 3 activities a week but half the jobs posted are fake or already filled.

•totally agree about the fake job postings. so annoying to apply to stuff that doesnt exist just to meet their requirements

•This is exactly why I used Claimyr when I was stuck in adjudication. Got through to someone who could actually explain what was holding up my claim.

•How much does that cost? I'm already broke from not getting paid.

Just to clarify the job search requirements since there seems to be some confusion - you need 3 job search activities per week, and they can include: applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, employment-related workshops, or informational interviews. You don't have to apply to fake postings, there are other valid activities that count.

•Good to know! Are there workshops I can attend online or do they have to be in person?

Luca Greco
•Online workshops count! WorkSource has tons of virtual workshops you can attend. LinkedIn Learning courses related to your field also qualify.

•I didn't know LinkedIn Learning counted. That actually makes it way easier to meet the requirements.

Just wanted to add that if you've never filed before, make sure you have all your employment info ready - employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation. The application process is mostly online now but having everything organized helps avoid delays.

•Thanks for the heads up! Do I need pay stubs or will they verify with my employer directly?

Aisha Hussain
•They verify with employers directly, but keep your pay stubs just in case they need additional documentation.

one more thing - if you do get approved make sure you file your weekly claims on time. i missed one week by a day and they made it such a pain to get that week reinstated

•When are the weekly claims due? Is there a specific day?

Ethan Brown
•Weekly claims are due by 11:59 PM on Saturday for the previous week. You can file starting Sunday morning for the week that just ended.

I filed last month and got my first payment in about 10 days. No issues with adjudication thankfully. The hardest part was just getting through the initial application - the website kept timing out. But once it was submitted everything moved pretty smoothly.

•That's encouraging! Did you have any problems with the job search logging?

•Not really, I just made a simple spreadsheet to track my applications and activities. Makes it easy when you file your weekly claims.

Update on my situation - finally got through to someone at Washington ESD today (used that Claimyr thing someone mentioned) and found out my adjudication was held up because my employer disputed my claim. Had no idea that was even happening. The agent was able to explain the next steps and said I should hear something within 2 weeks.

•Glad Claimyr worked for you too! It's crazy how they don't notify you when employers dispute claims.

Zara Malik
•Wait, employers can dispute your claim? What happens if they do?

Ethan Brown
•Employers can dispute if they believe you weren't eligible (like if they claim you were fired for misconduct). Washington ESD then investigates both sides before making a determination.

Just a reminder that even if your weekly benefit amount seems low, you might qualify for other assistance programs. SNAP, housing assistance, utility help - there are resources out there while you're looking for work.

•Good point, I should look into what else might be available. Do you know if getting unemployment affects eligibility for other programs?
0 coins
Aisha Hussain
•It counts as income for most programs but doesn't automatically disqualify you. Each program has different income limits so worth checking.

One last tip - if you end up needing to appeal any decisions, you only have 30 days from the date of the determination letter. Don't wait if you disagree with something, the time limit is strict.

•This is important! I know someone who missed the appeal deadline and couldn't get it reopened.
