How much can you get for unemployment in Washington state?
I'm thinking about filing for unemployment benefits but want to know what to expect payment-wise. Does anyone know how much you can actually get for unemployment in Washington? I've been working retail for the past 2 years making about $18/hour. Just want to understand if it's worth the hassle of filing or if the payments are too small to help much with rent and bills.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your highest earning quarter in your base year. For 2025, the maximum weekly benefit is $929 plus a $25 dependency allowance if you have dependents. The minimum is $295 per week. Your exact amount depends on your work history and earnings.

•Thanks! So if I made around $37k last year, what would that roughly translate to?

•probably around $400-500 per week but don't quote me on that

The formula is your highest quarter earnings divided by 26, but there's also a cap. If you made $37k annually, you'd likely get somewhere between $450-$550 weekly depending on how your earnings were distributed across quarters. You can use the Washington ESD benefit calculator on their website to get a more accurate estimate.

•Perfect, I'll check that calculator out. Do you know if there are any other requirements besides losing your job?

•Yes, you need to be able and available for work, actively seeking employment, and meet the job search requirements. You also need sufficient work history in your base year.

I've been getting $487 per week since I got laid off in December. The process wasn't too bad once I figured out how to navigate the Washington ESD website. Just make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week or you'll lose those benefits.

•How long did it take to get your first payment after filing?

•About 3 weeks for me, but I know some people wait longer if there are issues with their claim.

•3 weeks is actually pretty fast these days! I waited 6 weeks because of some adjudication nonsense

Been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks to check on my benefit amount calculation. Their phone system is absolutely terrible - either busy signals or I get disconnected after waiting on hold forever. Anyone found a better way to reach them?

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr (claimyr.com). They help you get through to Washington ESD agents without all the waiting and disconnections. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much time and frustration!

just remember that unemployment is taxable income so don't spend it all thinking you're getting free money. you'll owe taxes on it next year unless you have them withhold it

Vera Visnjic
•Good point, I hadn't thought about the tax implications. Can you have taxes withheld automatically?

Jake Sinclair
•Yes, you can elect to have 10% federal tax withheld when you file your initial claim or anytime after through your online account.

The amount varies SO much depending on your work history. I was making $25/hour and only getting $623/week because I had a gap in employment the year before. The base year calculation really matters - they look at the first four of the last five completed quarters before you file.

•That's confusing. So if I file in March 2025, they'd look at my earnings from when exactly?

Honorah King
•If you file in March 2025, your base year would be October 2023 through September 2024. They take your highest quarter from that period and divide by 26 to get your weekly benefit amount.

Mary Bates
•Exactly! And if you don't have enough earnings in that base year, you might qualify for an alternate base year which uses more recent quarters.

DON'T FORGET about the job search requirements!!! You have to apply for 3 jobs per week and keep a log or they'll cut off your benefits. I learned this the hard way when they disqualified me for not meeting the work search requirements.

•Yikes, thanks for the warning. Where do you keep track of the job search log?

•You can do it online through WorkSourceWA or keep your own records. Just make sure you have proof of your job search activities!

I've been on unemployment for 4 months now and honestly the weekly amount isn't enough to cover all my bills but it definitely helps. Getting around $445/week which covers my rent at least. The key is filing consistently and not missing any weekly claims.

•How often do you have to file the weekly claims?

•Every week, usually on Sunday. You have to report any work you did and wages you earned that week, even if it's just a few hours.

•and don't forget to report any job offers you turn down or they'll disqualify you

For retail workers like yourself, you should definitely apply! The benefits are designed to replace about 50% of your average weekly wages up to the maximum. Even if you get the lower end, it's better than nothing while you're job hunting.

Vera Visnjic
•That makes sense. 50% of my wages would actually be really helpful right now.

•Just make sure you file as soon as possible after losing your job. There's a waiting week but benefits are retroactive to when you first file, not when you're approved.

Washington state has some of the higher unemployment benefits in the country, so you're in a good position. I moved here from Texas where the max was like $535/week. Here I'm getting $740/week which actually makes a difference.

•wow that's a huge difference between states

•Yeah, Washington ESD is definitely more generous than most states. The trade-off is the cost of living is higher here too.

One thing to watch out for - if you have any issues with your claim going into adjudication, it can take FOREVER to resolve. I've been waiting 8 weeks for them to decide on my eligibility issue. Tried calling dozens of times but can never get through.

•This is exactly why I recommend Claimyr to everyone dealing with Washington ESD phone issues. I was stuck in adjudication limbo too until I used their service to finally talk to someone who could explain what was happening with my claim.

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator that's pretty accurate. Just plug in your quarterly earnings and it'll give you an estimate. Way easier than trying to do the math yourself or wait on hold for hours to ask someone.

Been getting unemployment for 2 months now and the weekly amount has been consistent at $567. The key things are: file immediately after job loss, do your weekly claims religiously every Sunday, keep detailed job search records, and be patient with the initial processing time.

•This is all really helpful info. Sounds like the process is worth it even if there are some hoops to jump through.

•Definitely worth it! Just be prepared for bureaucracy and keep good records of everything.

For your income level, you're probably looking at somewhere around $450-550 per week based on what others have shared. That's actually decent compared to what some states pay. The Washington ESD system isn't perfect but the benefit amounts are reasonable.

•Yeah that would definitely help bridge the gap while I'm job hunting. Thanks everyone for all the detailed responses!

Just a heads up - they recently updated some of the job search requirements so make sure you're looking at current info on the Washington ESD website. The rules change sometimes and you don't want to get caught off guard.
